Your really lucky to live near STN flights are always ridiculously cheap from there nearest airport to me is LBA can be cheap but no where near as good as STN.
10 Years ago I used to live within 50 minutes of stansted airport, and flew regularly with ryanair on 2p, £2.50 and £15 flights. It was ridiculous and ended up flying on day trips because it was cheaper than getting a train to London or getting a drink from a vending machine. The fares are so much higher now but I still use them occasionally from manchester. Also, the flights were much less busy then and you could choose where you could sit for free.
