I was born and raised in ENY. There’s always been prostitution, drugs and high crime. But there were also hard working men and women there. Home owners, business owners and other blue collar people that took care of their families and stood clear of the nonsense. Gentrification has been creeping in the last few years and in another 5 years, the neighborhood won’t look the same.

Thank you for saying this. I too live in a community much like this and the majority of people work and have good family values.
Those who have gotten caught up are always highlighted and makes us all as a collective in these communities look as though the entire neighborhood is wholly bad when in fact, it’s just a small group who make the trouble.

I wish this video showed more of the community and its people. I grew up in this area and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. I walk down those blocks my entire childhood in Brooklyn, and do not miss it because of the high crime and heavy traffic. I do go back every so often for the food and to see family. Brooklyn is not the same when I was growing up as a child due to so many people vacating the area and gentrification.

aspects of living in any urban city, there are "good, hardworking people" in that community. There is lot of history in that part of Brooklyn. Hopefully, gentrification won't destroy ENY's authenticity.

Very sad to see these young women in such desperate circumstances, they must turn to this for their livelihood. This is not a way to live. The cycle of poverty and addiction, keeps too many young people in “the life”, instead of being able to move up and out, and take their lives in a positive direction.

East NY may not be the fanciest of places but there are a lot of families that live there that work hard, go to school, and do the best they can with what they have. I have seen the prostitution in that area, my family don't live too far. I pray for those women every day and their strength to get away from that life and leave their pimp. I try to keep in mind they're no different than those hard working families - they too are doing the best that they can with what life has afforded them. Its just difficult when I pass by the area and see the pimps on the corners watching them and not get upset... (fine example at 3:32 & 6:38 - they try to not look obvious but it be obvious)...and if they're outside in broad daylight like that then they didn't earn enough for their pimps the night before. Its heartbreaking! BUT that's only a small aspect of "the hood" and thankfully there's so much more to that neighborhood than just the sex workers. Pray for the ones that are actually being trafficked and wanna escape not the ones that enjoy this profession let ‘em stay out and make bread. Consensual adult prostitution ain’t never hurt nobody. Find a way to make this stuff safer at least

Back in the early 2000s my mom would drive from canarsie (no more than 7 to 10 minutes from where you're driving around) to the church we attended. We would be going for 11 am service and see these young ladies still on the clock. By that time there were usually just down to wearing heals and a purse. I guess the sun would catch them off guard.
