How to Transfer Artwork to Your Wood for Relief Carving | Wood Carving for Beginners

  • Transferring artwork from a paper to a wood block for relief carving using two methods.
    Method 1 uses a stylus to etch the design into your wood. This is a great option if you don't have carbon paper.
    If you don't have a stylus, and you'd like to use carbon paper instead, go to Method 2

    Supplies Needed

    - Pencil
    - Metal Stylus with Metal Ball-Point at the Tip
    - Artwork for Transfer
    - Block of Wood You'll Be Using for Carving
    Optional:
    - Carbon Paper
    - Tape
    Method 1
    Step 1

    - Place your pattern or artwork over your block
    - You can hold it in place or tape it in place if you have tape handy
    Step 2

    - Go over the carving pattern with your metal stylus
    - This will etch the design into your wood block
    - Make sure you've made an indentation for every line
    Step 3

    - Take your pencil and trace the groove in the wood
    - This will give you enough detail to start carving
    - Begin carving!
    Method 2

    - Tape your artwork on one side to the wood block as shown
    - Slide your carbon paper underneath, so it's sandwiched between the artwork and the wood block
    - Trace over the artwork with the metal stylus or the pencil
