Restoring Sega dreamcast controller for my restored Dreamcast - Retro Console Restoration

  • Restoration of badly a yellowed Sega dreamcast controller and VMU for the extremely yellowed Dreamcast console I restored earlier. Like the console this unit also has only cosmetic defects. There are some glue reside from stickers and the yellowing is pretty bad.
Unlike many other consoles, the Dreamcast plugs memorycards to the controller. They have many other uses also. These same ports can also be used to attach a rumble pack and probably some other accessories as well.
I took the controller and VMU (memory card) apart and there was some dust etc. inside but otherwise it looked fine. However I had an issue of some of the yellowed parts containing metal pieces that would be ruined if I sunk them in hydrogen peroxide. I found that the de-yellowing process also works in only sunlight, but it is painfully slow. In addition I don't have many hours of sun outside in december. So I decided to try my UV-light system only on the parts. Why I didn't put all the parts in. Even though the parts are white the reflect a lot less UV-light than the foil around the box. if these other parts absorb the light the amount of UV-absorbed by the parts with metal pieces per hours decreases and it would take me longer to do this. And even now it took me almost a week.
The parts that could be sunken in hydrogen peroxide were sunken an it took me a day to get rid of the yellowing, which was worst on these parts. Who know how long it would have taken me if I did it without hydrogen peroxide. Before de-yellowing I washed the parts in soapy water and cleaned the glue residues with lighter fluid as many comments have suggested.
All the electronic components were cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Mine is over 99%. It has almost no waster so it wont corrode the boards. Alcohols are also good at dissolving both water and oil soluble substances. After everything was nice and looking new I let it dry (after washing the h202 off) and put it back together.

Maybe it's mentioned later in the comments, but you should probably check out cream peroxide developer, used in hairdressing. It's a peroxide cream/gel that will stay where you put it, so you could paint it on the plastic parts, keep it off the metal, and still use UV to accelerate whitening. 50V = 25% peroxide; 40V = 20% peroxide; etc.

IMO the Dreamcast was one of the most innovative consoles for their time, and I also feel that has been the only one, even on our current date and age that got right the idea of keeping players engaged by using the VMU system, not even nowadays with all the connectivity and hardware we have companies haven't try to achieve something similar, and is quite sad

  • @retro_escape2969

Nice! FYI, never plug in a controller while the DC console is turned on. That has been said to be the reason why controller ports go out on these consoles, a resistor ends up failing and needs replacement.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MiguelAviles175 The connector and controller and console electronics in the Dreamcast are carefully designed for hotplug, so in general, plugging the controller into the Dreamcast is quite safe and i don't see a design fault there at all.
Also the failing component is not a resistor, but a resistor-fuse. By failing it protects the console from further damage. It's an easy repair job too. Now if they were a little bit friendlier they could have perhaps used a polyfuse instead, like what you find on PC protecting the USB ports (if you're lucky - often missing), but that has potential issues too like it might not react quickly enough or might allow repeat damage to the console if you connect junk peripherals, so it's not like the design is not justifiable at all.
The reason it will blow (by design) is if the power and ground wires are shorted together due to controller, cable, or plug damage. Chances are, people plugged a wonky controller or extension cable into the running console and conflated the act of failure with the cause of failure. As you say, hotplugging the controller is something people do all the time. It's possible that someone's connector or wire is only somewhat bad and fails in particular when it's moved, and that happens the most when you plug it in, but like just look after your stuff properly and don't plug filthy shit into the Dreamcast.
Also fuses are thermal devices, they are basically just like a miniature incandescent lightbulb just without any light being let out, and just like one, they will burn out eventually for no fault at all. That's just how it is. 20 years have passed since the system came out, you expect occasional maintenance to be necessary by now. Let's say the fuse is critically weakened by long use and ready to fail any moment, then it's more likely to fail when you hotplug the controller than when console is turned on because the power supply takes like 50ms to ramp up to full output voltage, limiting the turn-on current burst through the fuse, while the controller can consume an arbitrary turn-on burst immediately upon being plugged in.
Similar to Dreamcast, there is a controller fuse that tends to fail in Playstation 2 too, but those aren't so obvious nor so easy to replace. Not sure about other systems, but... polyfuses cost actual money and a console is only supposed to last like 5 years, and manufacturers have incentive to punish the use of wonky third party peripherals anyway, it's not like USB where you're expected to just plug all manner of junk in there.
On the topic of badly designed fuses: if you have an Xbox 360 controller receiver for PC, an original one by Microsoft, it has a fuse that will fail for certain because of a very unfortunate heatsinking of the whole assembly, not because of an overcurrent condition. Don't be tempted to throw the receiver away and buy a $10 copy from China because those are just a lot of trouble. It's worth repairing. It's a 500mA fast fuse, but i say, while usually bridging out a fuse and replacing it with a wire link is a horrible idea, in the Xbox360 receiver for Windows, you can just do that, it seems to have been put in with no purpose, as the wire or the connector is more likely to short out than its little processor, the only component behind the fuse... and i mean your PC mouse has no fuse at all, and unprotected shorts in the plugs of USB flash drives after being carried around are quite common! So a short across the processor of the Xbox360 wireless receiver is kind of the least important thing to worry about.

kevin3003 From what I read online, it has nothing to do with bad treatment.
“It turns out in most cases it’s caused by bromine, used as flame retardant in the ABS plastic. Over time it forms a stable complex with atmospheric oxygen on the surface of the plastic.
Different batches of plastic for the same device can have different bromine levels, hence the yellowing is often uneven across parts of even the same unit.
The process is accelerated by UV light or heat - hence even the non-UV-exposed inside of consoles can yellow (or even items in unopened packages).”

When you have problematic parts and you can't use plain hydrogen peroxide you can use those hair creams with hydrogen peroxide in them so you could apply it precisely with a small brush.
Besides it would be handy for all the other parts too since you won't need many litres of H2O2 but just some cream to apply on the surface and a bit of clingwrap to keep it on the part

I have 3 super nintendo's and 2 dreamcast, and nothing has ever yellowed...I know it's a certain type of plastic that does that, but I also feel like grosser people or people who smoke speed up that yellowing process.

Hi! I loved your channel, it's helping me a lot to restore my consoles here in Brazil
Can you help me with this doubt? You removed the yellowish from the vmu, placing the parts with metal in the light without the peroxide.
But the plastic does not turn yellow because it is in contact with light for a long time?
Wouldn't the effect be the opposite?
    Thank you!!!

Just to add more fuel to the "Dreamcast vs PS2" battle, two words:
    SEGA NAOMI
The DC was a console far too ahead of its time for its own good, weighted down by SEGA's absurd policies and the PS2's role as a DVD player. Hell, Sony even tried the same stunt along with Namco (System 14x and 2xx) and guess what? The NAOMI/NAOMI 2 came out on top.

Quick question. Does the VMU lose its save data since the battery looked to reset to clock when removed? I would be devastated if I lost some of my various saves.

It didn't flopped, the only reason why it's not as popular as the PS2, GCN or Xbox is because it was discontinued very early into it's lifespan (1999-2001).

Ofc, the p2 was more powerful than the DC : as every newer hardware by 2 years later, it was, at least, what Sony must have done.
