Maybe it's mentioned later in the comments, but you should probably check out cream peroxide developer, used in hairdressing. It's a peroxide cream/gel that will stay where you put it, so you could paint it on the plastic parts, keep it off the metal, and still use UV to accelerate whitening. 50V = 25% peroxide; 40V = 20% peroxide; etc.

For the longest time I thought the yellowing was caused by these devices being in smoking households. Because my friends who lived in smoking households always had their systems yellow like this while mine never did. But then a friend who I know had never had anyone smoke in his house had his SNES yellow, and then I had a cat water fountain yellow (and I've NEVER allowed any smoking in my place). Then I saw the 8-bit guy's video about it, and it turns out it's ACTUALLY caused by UV light, which explains why my stuff never yellowed. I always kept my stuff in a room with heavy curtains so it stayed dark. But my cat water fountain was kept in the living room, and the side that yellowed was on the side that faced the window.

Why did we sell our Dreamcast?!?! It's such a beautiful console, the simple design, great Controller. I hope SEGA returns some day to making consoles and blows away the Competition including Nintendo.
I realized yesterday that my Dreamcast stuff is starting to yellow. It's not nearly that bad yet, but it's probably the first thing I can think of that I've noticed yellowing while I've owned it.
kevin3003 From what I read online, it has nothing to do with bad treatment. “It turns out in most cases its caused by bromine, used as flame retardant in the ABS plastic. Over time it forms a stable complex with atmospheric oxygen on the surface of the plastic. Different batches of plastic for the same device can have different bromine levels, hence the yellowing is often uneven across parts of even the same unit. The process is accelerated by UV light or heat - hence even the non-UV-exposed inside of consoles can yellow (or even items in unopened packages).” www.neogaf.com/threads/yellowing-old-consoles-the-solution.899984/
Seriously, some people really don't look after their consoles. I had a SNES for like 20 years and it looks as good the day I sold it (total mistake) as the day I bought it (best decision ever).
Beni, I totally agree, I like the real feel of it. and I used to enjoy going to sleep to these, but now the white background is so bright that I can’t do it anymore
I knew that hydrogen peroxide in combination with UV light reverses the yellowing in some chemical way but I was totally confused as well that he could de-yellow it just by laying it in the UV light, which I also thought caused the yellowing initially.
@@m0arf The UV light oxidizes the plastic forming free radicals which gives it that yellow color. Hydrogen peroxide is able to counteract this oxidation because it itself is an oxidizer. When placing the plastic in hydrogen peroxide with UV light, the UV light converts the hydrogen peroxide into hydroxyl radicals that bind to the aforementioned free radicals in the plastic and decompose them. This is why hydrogen peroxide is often sold in solid brown containers as it will break down when exposed to light for long periods!
Most collectors look for "Smoke Free Household" when buying retro. But personally, I think restorations like this are more fun than playing the console most of the time!
The yellowing has nothing to do with smoke. You can tell that by the fact that the yellowing is worse on the front than on the back. You can even see where parts of it were in the shade and thus the right color. This type of yellowing is caused by long term exposure to UV light (usually the sun, but household fluorescent lights also put out enough UV to cause this over time). If you want the chemistry involved, it's caused by UV-catalyzed breakdown of bromine-containing fire retardant chemicals in the plastic. I think this is why it's a lot more common to have plastic on electronics be darker colors (like black) these days, because bromine doens't show up on black plastic the way it does on light grey.
@@MapleTree0 Yep. Another thing that can work is to use a peroxide based cream (you can find stuff like that in beauty supply stores), cover it with cream, cover that with plastic wrap, and put under UV for 24-36 hours. See the 8-bit guy's tutorial on it. th-cam.com/video/VU7vXMezW_I/w-d-xo.html

Actually no. That would be the SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis Mini.
thanks captain obvious I wouldn’t that.
Who would've guessed.l
Alright, alright.. I keep coming back to these videos, so the LEAST I can do is subscribe. Thanks for all the entertaining content!

I can watch you and TheRelaxingEnd
all day!!
That was the Golden Lost Dreamcast controller, what have you done?!?!?!
Wow that's a pretty good job. If I would have done this, I would loose all the pieces or have more pieces left for me to used lol. Great job
don’t leave your dreamcast outside kids
It survived a house fire.
Very Good Job my Friend the old Sega controller is like new
I always thought the yellowing was caused by UV light and the Hydrogen Peroxide worked some kind of magic. What does cause the yellowing?
Long periods of direct sunlight exposure. It's like tanning for plastic. Also lots of contact with nicotine smoke.
You submerge it in hydrogen peroxide (around 12%) while exposing it to UV light at the same time for 24-36 hours.
I totally love it when people put "fake-dirt" on their stuff they are showing for a restauration. The yellowing would have been enough... why faking dirty fingerprints and doing some shoepolish-wash on the underside?
Just beautiful! I feel so peaceful seeing this restore 😊
I really do hope that is “Glue Residue” and not something else 💦
Who the hell do the "something else" on the freakin controller lmao
You’d be surprised...
Yeah, somebody got thirsty playing DoA2.
Not a technical person but I love watching your restoration videos. I wish I have your kind of knowledge as I have many gadgets turned yellow on me and it sucks.
where is the link to the freaking ice cube tray????????? :(
I miss my Dreamcast.
Another awesome restoration! Keep up the good work!
