    It blows my mind that machines like this built the world. It makes me feel completely inadequate to ponder how they figured out how to make it work all without computers

    Not sure why I just found this, but I love footage of the dirty work. Trackside stuff is cool, but I like to learn from watching others. Is more of this type of content coming soon?

      You bet. I'm out in CO filming a ton of stuff this week.

      I was out for the start in early November. Not too likely that I will be back out.

    What are those handles he's turning at 5:30 ? I can hear that it's releasing steam somewhere, is it like a "empty water from the lines" thing, or am I completely in the wrong. I love steam locomotives and understand the basic way they function, but I have no idea what even half of those handles and valves would do, and would like to learn.

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those are the automatic and independent brake. The big one that makes the louder noise is the automatic brake, which sets up everything in the train. He brings the valve over to "application", which is the "water sound" you heard - then puts it back into "lap" - which holds the reduction in pressure created from the application he made.
      The second, smaller valve also with the brass handle is the independent brake - just for the locomotive and tender. He released this by pushing it all the way to the left, which prevented the automatic from setting up the engine and tender brakes.
      The purpose of this whole maneuver was to keep the train stretched out while he crested the top of the steep portion of the hill at the museum - you don't slow down much with a small set just on the cars, but it prevents the cars from bumping into you if the engine slows down for any reason.

      @@Hyce777 Oh, ok. Thank you so much for the explanation!

    Why is he playing Jingle bells in the train whistle at 9:40? Engineers can't blow the whistle randomly, and the song is not even in the whistle handbook!

  • @hunterfink8378

    Why couldn't they use the locomotive at 9:55

    • @Hyce777
      @Hyce777  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hasn't run since the 1960's and it's also standard gauge but the rest of the museum is narrow gauge.

      @@Hyce777 that would be cool if they could use it because it looks like the one in the polar express
