  • Welcome to another Big Train Tour at the Colorado Railroad Museum! This month, we’ll be taking a look at Denver & Rio Grande Western steam locomotive No. 491. This massive, 1928 vintage coal burner is today the largest coal-burning steam locomotive operating in Colorado. This amazing machine is proudly displayed at the Museum, and occasionally steamed up for service to pull special event trains and pose for photographers.
Join Colorado Railroad Museum Executive Director Paul Hammond as he explores the history behind the Museum's unique railroad collection!

This was so well done: I've always been fascinated by the story of the K-37's journey from Standard Gauge Consolidations to 3-Foot Gauge Mikados.
It's nice to see the tale summarized like this.

The K 37 is the largest narrow gauge steam engine, for standard gauge it was the L 131 class 2-8-8-2

It would be amazing if C&TS could get one of the other K-37s running, since Cumbres Pass is practically their home turf.
I still say 491 should go back for a charter some day, although I admit I say this knowing nothing of the cost or practicality.

How long ago was the black hawk branch abandoned? When I went there in 2021 I was amazed by the mixture of super historical narrow and standard gauge all within an hour driving bubble. I’ve been to Colorado many times and the last two winters drove there from the lone star state. Narrow gauge has grown on me since I went from modeling late 1900’s bn and Sf diesel to coastal south tx 1910-1935 small steam. Only narrow gauge lines we had that I know of are the piney wood narrow gauge lines which ran some of the latest steam runs, from my understanding all the way up to the 70’s.
