    The Kampilan is a headhunting sword. It's definitely made to decapitate enemies since the heads are taken as a trophy. Some examples owned by datus (chiefs) were ornate and had hilts made of carabao horn, bone, and inlaid with gold, silver, or brass. The pommels also had tassels made out of human hair (which they take from those they decapitate).

    Mike's Kampilan is so accurate. The details are as well. I've heard that precolonial Visayan warriors take a piece of hair from their enemies and attach them to their Kampilan's handle when they kill them. Long hair is such a pride at least for the precolonial Visayans and shouldn't be cut short because it is only done to dead people especially those ones killed in battle. And the design in the handle is not a raptor though. It's not a Dinosaur. Haha. I think it's the head of the legendary Bakunawa or so. Not sure. I could be wrong but I sure do hope otherwise. Mike's Kampilan is so accurate, and looks like the ones we see on historical dramas in the Philippines. Nice work Mike!

    • @NightmareBlade10
      @NightmareBlade10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@danilaka3411 Yeah but that's more of a design issue than a smithing issue. There's no metal whatsoever along the handle, guard, or pommel, to provide any sort of counterweight and the blade itself is supposed to be wider at the tip than at the base, making it more of a chopping weapon like a falchion. Historically it was also used to decapitate heads, something a lighter weapon would have difficulty doing.

I’ve been using such cleaver variant for more than 4 years now. Haven’t sharpen it ever since yet still cuts like new. As soon as I heard the first judge mention the balance I knew who was going to win short of catastrophic failure. Both were heavy which is normally the kiss of death when its only one blade, but the better weight distribution made those judges happy.

    This Moro weapon of the Philippines is one of the most widely traded weapon in the archipelago. It is even argued to be the weapon that beheaded the famous explorer Magellan in some accounts because there are many accounts on how he died in the hands of the great Chieftain Datu Lapu-Lapu...
    Also, the handle is quite strict in form. It depicts the dragon Bakunawa who fell in love and obsessed on the moon goddess Bulan and tried to eat her. That is why the moon becomes red for the dragon is trying to eat her. Thus it is believed that the sword Kampilan is a very old style of sword due to its commonality in the Muslim areas where it shouldn't been... because the Bakunawa origin in a pre-Muslim religion. It is sought to be the default style even before Islam enter to some of our islands...

    Some Kampilan swords differ from who makes it in their tribe, it may be curved upwards like a katana or sometimes curved a bit backwards like a scythe, and the tips are also sometimes different, but the purpose is the same, to pick up items you have cut off,
    Oh and the handles also have either hair or rope designs of the tribe
