There are multiple Ayreon concept albums and all of them should be heard once. A full spectrum of guest vocalists and musicians helped create not just an album but a whole universe as many of the albums tie into each other.

I came here to talk about Ayreon - The Human Equation. Glad someone mentioned it already. It is a bit less known than the rest of the list but with Mikael Ackerfeldt, James LaBrie, Devin Townsend plus the captivating story about the main characters coma dreams, this is among my top albums of all time.

How csn you mention TSO and ignore the band that invented it and formed the base band for it. Trans Siberian Orchestra is a fleshed out and slightly toned down version of Savatage. Savatage singer Jon Oliva and producer Paul O’Neill came up with the concept for TSO after several metallized orchestra pieces off of 1995’s Dead Winter Dead (Especially Christmas Eve, Sarajevo 12/24) blew up on the airwaves. Savatage ruled the 90’s with three rock operas. Streets(1990) and Dead Winter Dead (1995) are better than any Concept Album/Rock Opera that anyone has ever done. And The Wake of Magellan (1997) is almost as good and just as inspirational as the other two. If you don’t know these recordings, I encourage you to check them out.

Crack the Skye by Mastodon is my second favorite album of all time (only behind Ride the Lightning). Trippy, psychedelic lead guitarwork, chunky riffing, a surreal storyline that needs to be heard to be believed, the first time drummer Brann Dailor performed lead vocals on a Mastodon album, and the reason for its existence as closure for tragedy in his personal life (a common backstory behind Mastodon albums now that I think about it), Crack the Skye is a masterpiece, plain and simple.

If you read any of my many comments on here, you will see where I am coming from. I love Prog Metal but I am selective. Three of my top five (1.Savatage, 2. Queensryche, 3. Fates Warning) Prog Metal bands would take up six of the spots on this top ten.
Interestingly, my first true favorite band was Boston as I was in high school when the first album came out (Plus, Tom Scholz is from Ohio, like I am.). After High School I morphed to Rush as my favorite band in college, followed by The Scorpions for 10 years. In 1992, I heard Savatage and they have been my favorite band ever since. My influences include Led Zeppelin, Boston, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Bad Company, Triumph, Iron Maiden and MSG (I think Michael Schenker is the best hard rock/metal guitarist in history.). Anyway, since a large chunk of my favorite bands are Prog Metal bands, if you had to categorize me, that’s where I’d fit.
Finally, I have heard good things about Death and Chuck Schuldiner. I heard they are from Florida (Like Savatage) and Chuck died too young like Savatage’s original lead guitarisi Criss Oliva (The most underrated metal guitarist ever and number 4 on my greatest metal guitarist list). I need to check Death out.

-Frances The Mute by The Mars Volta (I honestly have no idea)
-…And Justice For All by Metallica (the criminal justice system)
-A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park (nuclear war)

The two concept albums I would add would be The Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed, the album that would begin progressive rock! They performed with the London Festival Orchestra. And all of the songs are fantastic, all killer no filler! Must listen to front to back! And it's one of my favorite albums of 1967!
The other would be The Who's Quadrophenia! This is a better concept album and a very interesting story about a boy named Jimmy who's a young working class mod had difficulty finding a job, only to quit 2 days after working as a dustman. He's happy about being a mod, but after he lost his girlfriend to his best friend, he went crazy. After he destroyed his scooter and failed suicide attempt, he went on a train to Brighton to look back at the memories he had with some of his mod friends. After he discovered that The Ace Face works at a hotel as a bell boy, Jimmy realized that everything in his life had rejected and steal a boat, sailing it out to the sea. The boat got stuck by the rocks and we don't know if Jimmy came out alive or if he killed himself. The ending is left ambiguous. This album was all written by Pete Townshend! The songs were way better. The singles are fantastic, and Roger Daltrey's performance of Love Reign O'er Me is perfectly done. And that's The Who's best album.

    • @randomjunkohyeah1
      @randomjunkohyeah1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Your two suggestions are absolutely perfect, Takoda. They’re two of my favorite albums, with Quadrophenia quite possibly being at the very top of the list.
It’s so incredibly raw and real. Essentially it was The Who’s unofficial tenth anniversary project, being intensely introspective and retrospective for the band. Looking back on the early sixties mod culture they were created from, which by 1973 already felt like a bygone era, an eternity away from where they found themselves. With the character of Jimmy being the perfect personification of that journey and all the complex feelings they had about it.
I have never heard of a band so deliberately and potently calling back to their earlier music like The Who did with putting in a soft, muffled, wistful snippet of “The Kids Are Alright”. (The only other example I can think of is the very end of “All You Need is Love”, but that was basically done on a whim for fun.)

Welcome To My Nightmare and The Last Temptation, both by Alice Cooper, are great concept albums. The latter actually got a three-part comic that told a more fleshed out version of the album's tale. He also did a concept album about his stint in a loony bin getting detoxed, called From The Inside. The album is all about that, and telling about the people he met there. He's done a fair number of others (Goes To Hell, Welcome 2 My Nightmare, Along Came A Spider, etc.), but those are the three that always stand out to me.

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet is loosely based on a Brett Easton Ellis novel and broadly deals with ADHD and bipolar disorder as well as overmedicating and social isolation. It's a pretty dark album.
Also the lead singer of Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson released an album called Hand Cannot Erase which deals with the fictionalized "last year" of Joyce Carol Vincent who was found alone, dead in her apartment having been undiscovered for more than 2 years. She had been isolated from friends and loved ones and no one knew that she had passed until her body was discovered.

It's more or less Pink Floyd's unique take on George Orwell's Animal Farm concept, but it's so insightful and so topical in such a timeless way the way it deconstructs hyper capitalistic society and even offer's a heartwarming sentiment in it's opening and closing tracks about the importance of a society being able to look out for their fellow human being. :)

I know there’s the argument that it doesn’t really count considering John’s songs don’t really play into the idea of Sgt Pepper and his band. There's a few that I can think of:
Fucked Up - David Comes To Life: A meta rock opera about a couple, David and Veronica, who fall in love and bomb a lightbulb factory, resulting in the death of Veronica. David feels sorrow and regret, but soon realizes he's actually a character in a story. Plot can be hard to follow, but it's an amazing hardcore punk album, and "Queen Of Hearts" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
NIN - Year Zero: Released in 2007, this album takes place in the far out future of 2022, and is about a dystopian America that gets wiped out by an alien presence. Had a really cool ARG with it back when it was released.
The Antlers - Hospice: An album about a hospice nurse that falls in love with his terminally ill patient. It's an allegory for an abusive relationship that lead singer Peter Silberman had. It's incredibly, INCREDIBLY sad, though "Wake" is one of the most cathartic and emotional peaks in an album.
And of course, pretty much everything that Coheed and Cambria have released, except The Color Before The Sun. Everything but that one is part of The Armory Wars storyline. I've always found it impressive that their entire discography (mostly) is dedicated towards one plot, even if said plot can be hard to follow in audio format.

Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth
Anything by Ayreon or Avantasia (they only do metal operas)
2112 isn't a concept album (the title track stands alone on the album), however their final album "Clockwork Angels" is.
