I first heard this my freshman year in college playing football in our looker room in 1979. We heard this all the time everywhere there was also a 12-inch record that lasted for 15 minutes on the full version of Rappers Delight (Sept. 1979). Right after that there were all kind of Rap groups coming out of New York like Afrikaa Bambaata, Grand Master Flash and The Furious 5 and The Funky 4 + 1 who all came out at the same time or even before SugarHill but had more NY street /club credit.
You should check out the 2015 video(s) of Philly Mayor Mike Nutter (former DJ) getting on stage with the Roots at 'Philly July Jam" singing this as "Wonder Mike"...
It was type of music called street corner harmony in the fifties with many of those successful groups became doo wop kind of rock and roll. In the seventies dj splayed records at parties and clubs for people to dance to They got front men who rhymed to the beat of the dance music . Music record producer Sylvia decided to record Sugarhill Gang Rappers Delight as the first rap song though there many other rappers in the NYC area that performed this type of music.

We heard this all the time everywhere there was also a 12-inch record that lasted for 15 minutes on the full version of Rappers Delight (Sept. 1979). Right after that there were all kind of Rap groups coming out of New York like Afrikaa Bambaata, Grand Master Flash and The Furious 5 and The Funky 4 + 1 who all came out at the same time or even before SugarHill but had more NY street /club credit.
Fun fact, the back rythym guitar track is sampled from a song called Good Times by the band Chic...late 70's disco group.

It was type of music called street corner harmony in the fifties with many of those successful groups became doo wop kind of rock and roll. In the seventies dj splayed records at parties and clubs for people to dance to They got front men who rhymed to the beat of the dance music . Music record producer Sylvia decided to record Sugarhill Gang Rappers Delight as the first rap song though there many other rappers in the NYC area that performed this type of music.
