The reason this one gets requested the most is because it is the theme for the tutorial boss so it is the the track that introduced people to the MGR music. Also RULES OF NATURE got memed to high hell when MGR came out.
Not to mention; the tutorial boss, Metal Gear Ray, is a boss that last time we saw it, Snake needed to use Rex to take it on. The last time Raiden fought one, he did it alongside Solidus with copious rocket launchers. Here though, he takes it out singlehandedly, on foot, with a sword.

This is the first boss game in the track. So picture yourself as Raiden fighting a souped up version of Metal Gear RAY in the prologue to a dynamic instrumental version of this theme. You take out its armor piece by piece, dodging its tail swings, lasers, blocking bullets with your sword etc. You wear it down little by little, and then, towards the end of the fight you get a QTE where RAY swings its bladed arm at you and you need to block it with your sword. a lot of these songs actually have Demo versions of them without a lot of the "electronic" feel, some with different singers even, i'm pretty sure that's because Maniac Agenda came in later in development and basically remixed the boss songs to what they are now. the best example of the difference between the demo and finished versions is Jetstream Sam's theme The Only Thing I Know For Real, it's definitely a Demo Version, but i'd say the imperfections on that version of the song actually makes it fit Sam's character way better than the finished version, since he's the only boss you fight that is almost completely human with only his right arm being cybernetic, the lack of that "digital-ness" ends up working pretty well.
The game’s first boss and the amazing way the lyrics cut in is why this track is so popular. On its own I don’t think it’s as good as some of the other boss themes, but it’s still very hype especially when you get to experience it ingame.
My personal favorite is I'm My Own Master Now, there are definitely more enjoyable songs than this one. The thing with this particular track though is it solidifies your status as a badass in this game, and it prepares you for what's to come. Through it you learn that the game's music changes dynamically based on what phase of the fight you're on. The music builds in intensity, adds vocals and then the most intense part of the song comes in when you finish off the boss in an epic QTE. It's pure madness and I can't help but love it. I recommend the Spirit Of The Wolf Mix here on youtube for this song, as it's got a similar flow than the actual game, what with the gradual layering and such. The youtube channel MonochromiumLive has other similar mixes for MGR songs.
Hearing the MGR:R soundtrack in isolation is pretty great; it's powerful, recognizable, and memorable. It's also like being shown an amazing cake, with fancy frosting and a message on top that reads "Let them have cake", and having hundreds of thousands of people tell you it's the best tasting cake they ever had, but not getting to taste it yourself. The gameplay brings everything together when its in your hands, with most of the songs starting off as instrumentals, with the lyrics dropping in at the hype moments, when the boss is low on health or starting up a new phase. Most of the themes that play during the levels have an 'undertone' variation that plays when out of combat, that seamlessly morphs into an intense, full instrumental or lyrical version when you draw your sword to fight. The boss themes also align with something about the boss they're paired with; their emotional state, their place in the world, or (like Sundowner's theme) an almost careless and blissful playing-along with the course of nature. As far as the creative and dynamic morphing of the songs between their different versions goes (all the boss themes also have an 'undertone' version, which plays every time you enter Blade Mode for precision cutting, in addition to the instrumental and lyrical versions), I honestly don't think there's any other game out there that does it quite as well as MGR:R. I vividly remember my first playthrough of the game; each new song I got to, I was commenting to myself, 'Dang, this is really great. What a soundtrack!' And then I got to Monsoon, and it all finally clicked in my mind. That intro riff played, and I instantly grew a huge grin and practically shouted "Let's go!!" Leading up to that point, letting myself feel invested in the story, and looking at this guy who seemed like he was the worst possible opponent for a swordfighter, suddenly all that tension was flipped completely around by the first few notes of Stains of Time, and I went from apprehensive to pumped up and ready to go harder, faster, and stronger, to climb as high as I needed to in order to win. An instant turn-around from 'is this even possible?' to 'of course it's possible, watch this!' I don't think I've ever had a moment like that, so tied to the music of a soundtrack, in any other game. I'll never forget it. And yeah, I guess it's fair to call the genre of this game "Revengeance", but that's even more noticeable when you play the game, and hear (and feel) all the nuance of moment-to-moment action and reaction. MGR:R isn't for everyone, it's true, and time hasn't been kind to the more serious story beats (what with 'meme culture' becoming something completely different in the nine years since this game came out), but I can't recommend playing it enough to anyone who enjoys the music from the game.
Great video dude! If you are interested there's a theme from the Blade Wolf DLC of this game that's just * chef kiss * beautiful, you should check it out! the song it's called " The Hot Wind Blowing"
Should iterate that he voices Raubahn specifically for A Realm Reborn. For HW and beyond he is voiced by Nick Boulton. He also sings the lyrics for Shadowbringers, To the Edge, and Close in the Distance.
this one is an experience more than anything. a lot of people (including myself) out their affinity for the song into that initial moment of pure video game badassery in the tutorial.
The guy that sings this is the ARR voice of Raubahn in FFXIV (though they replaced the entire cast starting with Heavensward). However, he does come back and sing To the Edge and the main Shadowbringer's theme. As for the attachment.... It's the track for the first boss, Metal Gear RAY.
"How do you not move to this??" BECAUSE. I'm currently fighting an 100 ton T-Rex with a tail that shoots LAZERS AND ROCKETS using every remaining braincell I have to do so! In all seriousness, I'm really glad people are essentially bringing this game back into the light and I have a feeling it has to do with 2 videos from a TH-camr named Max0r that BLEW UP. But I'd gotten all the achievements back on the 360 at least 5 years ago and I hadn't touched it since. Love reliving thid
Other than maybe It Has To Be This Way (and that's mainly due to the memes lol), this is probably the most iconic theme in the game, and it definitely deserves it
To be quite honest... no, it definitely doesn't deserve it. Don't ever let anybody say Rules of Nature is a bad song, but out of all of the boss tracks in MGRR it is easily the worst one. Things like it being the first boss song in the game, the scripted moment where the chorus cuts in, the context of it being against a Metal Gear Ray etc. really helped it stand out. It was only in this most recent resurgence of the game nine years after its release that people on the internet finally, FINALLY started quoting more songs from the game than just Rules of Nature. ...I spent too many years being too salty that people were quoting RUUULES OF NAATUUUURE while all the rest of the songs just kinda sat there being excellent but seemingly forgotten. When songs like The Only Way I Know For Real, A Stranger I Remain, The Stains of Time, Red Sun, Collective Consciousness, It Has To Be This Way were all in the exact same game, Rules of Nature should not have ended up being the most iconic one.
It insane to me how alive these tracks feel, in this one you can almost feel during the final moments of the song as the "prey" in the song is struggling on its last legs to stay alive.
The reason why this song is the most requested is quite simple. You get the most iconic scene in the game when the "Rules of nature" bit hits, making it the most memorable one.
Like others have said, this is the theme of the tutorial boss who sets the tone for the rest of the game. I highly recommend playing the game (or streaming it if you're up for it) as the game really isn't that long, google says about 7 hours but I've seen full stream vods that are about 10 hours long.
this song game and song hold a special place for me as this was the first game i bought with my own money that i earned from working and was allowed to purchase on my own back in highschool thanks to my close relationship with the gamestop employees i knew they knew me very well and bent some rules for me
This song is a metaphor for Metal Gears becoming outdated and now being replaced by cyborgs like Raiden (The main character). Metal Gears used to be the most powerful thing on the planet but like a predator in the wild, eventually they get killed off by something stronger. In this case it's Raiden easily destroying Metal Gear Ray, so easy in fact, that it's the tutorial boss. It's also player's first real hype moment in the game when this music kicks in and it goes perfectly with the boss fight intensity wise.
5:00 yes, its a loop, the original is 2:30 minutes long, cause, the game itself loops the song in the sections it needs, and when the fight starts BAAMM insta break down of the song xD search for Jamie Christopherson Vocal Tracks, those are the originals, 2~5 minutes no loop songs, theres also instrumental versions
This song is a banger anyway, but it hits tenfold when your first hear it playing the game rather than just listening by itself. Having the lyrics hit as you parry Ray's blade and the different parts as the fight progress is the hypest thing and something you never forget.
This is how the game sets its tone. The first boss - the first FIGHT after the tutorial - throws you against a Metal Gear Ray with just a sword. It is one of the most blood pumping, intense, hype experiences I've had in a game. And the wild thing about the game is that it doesn't shy away from the political drama that MGS is known for. After the Patriots are dealt with, Rising focuses on the chaotic power struggles going on to fill the power vacuum. Also a bit of trivia for this vocalist. The vocalist here has done voice work in FF14, and - if I'm remembering correctly anyway - is the same vocalist in To The Edge and a few other themes.
When I hear the singer yell, "Rules of Nature!" I get images of Raiden throwing a huge metal gear ray over his shoulder, it's so empowering you have no idea.
Haven't played it yet but from what I've seen of the combat in mgr, there is no block button, the way you defend is by attacking before the enemy gets a chance to attack you, there's no stopping in the fights to defend or regen or whatever, the closest you get to that is when you scoop out your enemies spines and use them for energy, so what you said about just pure power and violence is very accurate to the gameplay, it's a very interesting idea for gameplay and another reason why the ost is a masterpiece Edit: I think the reason this one is so popular is just cause of how crazy it is, really sets the tone for the game and fits the scene where it plays, which I'm sure you've seen be described by other people I also recommend you look at the lyrics on genius it has a good explanation for the name and what it's about
As people said this is for basically the tutorial boss and its the defining moment of how the game will be. People when they went through the scene that this song plays on it was a giant "Oh, I can already see this game will be amazing"
If someone requested The Hot Wind Blowing, I hope you put it next to Collective Consciousness because a bit of motif is connected and it is one of the MGR:R OST that people might forget because it is only available for Bladewolf's DLC
The songs dynamically add and remove tracks according to the situation in the game, sort of like Nier. It's why the version of The Only Thing I Know for Real that you listened to started with an off vocal loop, as opposed to this mix, which started out full throttle.
Tets put it pretty well when it comes to why the song went super viral. So instead I'll answer the question of their context. The genius of these songs is that if you don't really pay attention to lyrics and just play the game, they get you jacked up and adrenaline and hyped up to just "go apeshit" with violence as you kind of put it. They almost kind of make you forget that you're playing a game and inserting inputs into it and make you totally immersed into the moment. But if you actually do listen to the lyrics, they have a lot of meaning in the game. They either reflect the ideology of the boss you are fighting. Why they do what they do, or why they are fighting, etc. Or they reflect the relationship between Raiden (the MC) and the boss. If you want a MGR song with very blatant, heavy-handed and hard to miss lyrics, then try "Collective Consciousness".
For context on this song it’s the boss theme for the first level. It’s against Metal Gear Ray as your chasing Sundowner. It’s a super catchy song that’s amazing for the batshit insane fight against a metal gear as THE FIRST BOSS.
The tracks ingame have much less loop in them, they usually run once without the lyrics, and then again with lyrics Or the lyrics kick in at a certain parts of the boss fight.
Definitely give the game a playthrough and barring that check out the bossfights for the songs you've covered. The songs are awesome, but in context become godlike.
There are few similar songs to the MGR:R soundtrack. For example: Celldweller - Good L_ck (Yo_'re F_cked) The genre of the soundtrack can be described as "Epic electronic punk rock" :)
These will all hit stronger in the game because what Platinum Games did for MGR and Nier Automata is double down super hard on adaptive music, so even though the track is kinda short it doesn't feel like it in the game, you only get the music climaxing when there is an actual climax happening on screen.
You asked for the meaning of the titles? There actually are: Rules of nature: It talks about how metal gear ray and metal gears in general are a weapon of the past, and that they must adapt and evolve to match the power of the cyborgs Red sun: "Res sun" is the way the japanese (i think) refer to the sun in the morning after a masacer, which fits with the enemie in the song, since hes a sadistic coward that uses machetes and sccisors The stains of time: I dont know if the title has a connection to anythingh, but the song talks about how the boss sacrified his body and humanity for better cybernetic enhastments and when he realices that, it will hunt him until he dies The only thingh i know for real: This song talks about hoe Jetstream Sam has forgotten even his own name in the battlefield, fighting for reasons that he doesnt understand and causes he doesnt belive in, and that the only thingh he know is that there will be a bloodshed It has to be this way: This one talks about how the final boss and raiden share ideals, and that they are opposite sides of the same coin, but that by this point, the only way left is figthing to the death This is just what i have heard and a little bit of my own interpretacion, if anyone sees a mistake, i will be happy of hearing it. I only talked about the ones that you have reacted to, if you want me to explain the other, just ask
At this point it's impossible to not think of this song when you see a small/weak thing fight back and winning agains't something much bigger and stronger than itself (like an ant lifting a house or something).

You need to listen to this song with the video of Raiden SUPLEXING metal gear ray. That just boosts the song's oomph factor to infinity.
Jason Charles Miller is fantastic. The songs he sang in Shadowbringers and Endwalker are some of the best songs I've ever heard in my life.
Endwalker is Sam Carter from The Architechts, but yes, he is involved with FFXIV!
@@Varizen87 he means "Close in the Distance"
Excited for you to review and react to Rising Revengeance's other songs!
I was floored when I found out the vocalist J.C. Miller also did the vocals to the Shadowbringers main theme.
Great video dude! If you are interested there's a theme from the Blade Wolf DLC of this game that's just * chef kiss * beautiful, you should check it out! the song it's called " The Hot Wind Blowing"
It's interesting how the context of a game can change someone's appreciation of a song. Rules of Nature also the most meme'd song from the soundtrack.
So, fun fact about the singer for this track. He voices Raubahn from Final Fantasy XIV.
Also sings the FFXIV Shadowbringers theme and To The Edge. Jason C Miller.
Should iterate that he voices Raubahn specifically for A Realm Reborn. For HW and beyond he is voiced by Nick Boulton.
He also sings the lyrics for Shadowbringers, To the Edge, and Close in the Distance.
Another track I personally recommend from MGR is I'm My Own Master Now (Theme of Blade Wolf).
- That was awesome final boss.
- It's a tutorial boss...
this one is an experience more than anything. a lot of people (including myself) out their affinity for the song into that initial moment of pure video game badassery in the tutorial.
I love this reactions, we need To see a playthrough of the game from your perspective
*takes fat bong hit*
"And then, get this; Raiden suplexes the fucking metal gear." -- Kojima, probably
2:13 Man felt it
He knows the rules, and so do i
Context definitely helps these songs, as most songs in the game reflect the ideology of the bosses you fight.
"How do you not move to this??"
BECAUSE.
Tutorial boss fight. The moment RULES OF NATURE! is shouted. 'Oh, it's this kind of a game. "
Other than maybe It Has To Be This Way (and that's mainly due to the memes lol), this is probably the most iconic theme in the game, and it definitely deserves it
THE MEMES
@@Copperhell144
Don't forget the Hot Wind Blowing, that song is badass.
"Stains of Time"
It insane to me how alive these tracks feel, in this one you can almost feel during the final moments of the song as the "prey" in the song is struggling on its last legs to stay alive.
Brand new FFXIV song "In the Balance" might blow you away, It certainly blew me in more ways than one.
This plays while you are slicing up a giant robot and the music goes perfectly for the scene.
This is the introduction to the mgr soundtrack essentially with it being the tutorial bosses theme
If you like this song, you are going to LOVE the rest.
I bet you would prefer "I'm My Own Master Now".
this song game and song hold a special place for me as this was the first game i bought with my own money that i earned from working and was allowed to purchase on my own back in highschool thanks to my close relationship with the gamestop employees i knew they knew me very well and bent some rules for me
This song is a metaphor for Metal Gears becoming outdated and now being replaced by cyborgs like Raiden (The main character).
This song sends alert signals ringing through your head but also makes you want to beat the crap out of something
I'm surprised that it took so long to get to this track; I think it's most people's first MGR track.
5:00 yes, its a loop, the original is 2:30 minutes long, cause, the game itself loops the song in the sections it needs, and when the fight starts BAAMM insta break down of the song xD
search for Jamie Christopherson Vocal Tracks, those are the originals, 2~5 minutes no loop songs, theres also instrumental versions
This song is a banger anyway, but it hits tenfold when your first hear it playing the game rather than just listening by itself. Having the lyrics hit as you parry Ray's blade and the different parts as the fight progress is the hypest thing and something you never forget.
This is the only theme from Mgrs that didn't originally come from it it first is heard in Metal gear solid 4 when we see raiden for the first time
I absolutely love Rules of Nature. When I played the first level and fought that tutorial boss, I was jamming so hard to it. It’s just so damn catchy!
My favourite song from MGR has to be The Hot Wind Blowing, I'd love it if you could react to it, it's so good !
Legendary soundtrack.
This was the Bury the Light of its time when it came out lol
Great reaction. I don't know if you've listened to Collective Consciousness yet, but it's another fan favorite from this game.
Haven't played it yet but from what I've seen of the combat in mgr, there is no block button, the way you defend is by attacking before the enemy gets a chance to attack you, there's no stopping in the fights to defend or regen or whatever, the closest you get to that is when you scoop out your enemies spines and use them for energy, so what you said about just pure power and violence is very accurate to the gameplay, it's a very interesting idea for gameplay and another reason why the ost is a masterpiece
Edit: I think the reason this one is so popular is just cause of how crazy it is, really sets the tone for the game and fits the scene where it plays, which I'm sure you've seen be described by other people
I also recommend you look at the lyrics on genius it has a good explanation for the name and what it's about
As people said this is for basically the tutorial boss and its the defining moment of how the game will be.
People when they went through the scene that this song plays on it was a giant "Oh, I can already see this game will be amazing"
I was JUST thinking why he hasn't reacted to rules of nature yet lol
I love this content!
MORE METAL GEAR LETS GO
If someone requested The Hot Wind Blowing, I hope you put it next to Collective Consciousness because a bit of motif is connected and it is one of the MGR:R OST that people might forget because it is only available for Bladewolf's DLC
Sung by Jason Charles Miller (of Godhead).
The songs dynamically add and remove tracks according to the situation in the game, sort of like Nier. It's why the version of The Only Thing I Know for Real that you listened to started with an off vocal loop, as opposed to this mix, which started out full throttle.
Ken Ashcorp has a really neat acoustic cover of this one :D There should be more just plain acoustic covers of this OST.
“A ripping good time”. Jack would approve
He finally did it!
RULES OF NATURE!!! It's just the best.
Now all we need is "collective consciousness" "I'm my own master now" and "stranger I remain"
This song is on my workout and jogging playlist
Why do ppl like this? Simple
"RULES OF NATURE!"
Niiiiice
Now give me "Hot Wind Blowing".
It hits wayyyy harder in the game cuz it goes from high sound music to Huge boom quick time event with RULES OF NATURE
For context on this song it’s the boss theme for the first level. It’s against Metal Gear Ray as your chasing Sundowner. It’s a super catchy song that’s amazing for the batshit insane fight against a metal gear as THE FIRST BOSS.
The first boss of the game and it's a gigantic robot with a laser
Raiden beats this guy in 30 seconds
This is the song that comes to mind when I think “metal gear rising soundtrack”
The tracks ingame have much less loop in them, they usually run once without the lyrics, and then again with lyrics Or the lyrics kick in at a certain parts of the boss fight.
Nice to see people are still living under a rock.
Highly hoping he listens to A Stranger I Remain from this game soon
Weirdly was getting an early 2000's The Cult vibe from the vocals. Just for a few moments at the start.
Definitely give the game a playthrough and barring that check out the bossfights for the songs you've covered. The songs are awesome, but in context become godlike.
Not a big fan of the way the uploader looped these tracks, very jarring.
Yup
Yeah where’s the “AAAAAAAAAAAAAA”
There are few similar songs to the MGR:R soundtrack. For example: Celldweller - Good L_ck (Yo_'re F_cked)
The genre of the soundtrack can be described as "Epic electronic punk rock" :)
There actually are:
Rules of nature: It talks about how metal gear ray and metal gears in general are a weapon of the past, and that they must adapt and evolve to match the power of the cyborgs
Red sun: "Res sun" is the way the japanese (i think) refer to the sun in the morning after a masacer, which fits with the enemie in the song, since hes a sadistic coward that uses machetes and sccisors
The stains of time: I dont know if the title has a connection to anythingh, but the song talks about how the boss sacrified his body and humanity for better cybernetic enhastments and when he realices that, it will hunt him until he dies
The only thingh i know for real: This song talks about hoe Jetstream Sam has forgotten even his own name in the battlefield, fighting for reasons that he doesnt understand and causes he doesnt belive in, and that the only thingh he know is that there will be a bloodshed
It has to be this way: This one talks about how the final boss and raiden share ideals, and that they are opposite sides of the same coin, but that by this point, the only way left is figthing to the death
This is just what i have heard and a little bit of my own interpretacion, if anyone sees a mistake, i will be happy of hearing it.
I only talked about the ones that you have reacted to, if you want me to explain the other, just ask
Awesome content
funny part is, this is basically still in the tutorial area of the game, right at the very beginning you open with a bossfight
Here's to hoping that you have A Stranger I Remain queued up for the future, it's the biggest banger in the whole game imho
Ummmm more Rising? You know I'm here for it.
A reaction to the whole OST would be fine with me ngl, the whole t thing slaps
At this point it's impossible to not think of this song when you see a small/weak thing fight back and winning agains't something much bigger and stronger than itself (like an ant lifting a house or something).
