This song is so special for a reason. Its not only different, but fits that moment in the game so well. Father and sons long awaited and final reunion. Love buried under a giant pile of hate for eachother.
My favorite from X soundtrack is probably Auron’s theme but this kicks a lot of butt. Nobody expected that, which is funny cause this song is at the very beginning of the game xD Pretty sure this alienated a lot of fans back in the day. At first I wasn’t into it but multiple re-earring later it grew on me very fast.
Well this was a long time coming. EDIT; The first time I heard this song, I was playing a demo for a game in a series I'd heard of, but knew absolutely nothing about, in a genre of games I'd never even heard of. My literal first introduction to anything rpg or Final Fantasy related was *that* opening cutscene, which was also the most amazing cinematic I'd ever seen in a game, accompanied by this song. As someone who also had no interest in music at that time, to say I was blown away by that first introduction is an understatement. After I was finished with the demo, I immediately went back and played it again about 10 times over, then went out and got the full game the moment it released. That opening cutscene and this song, literally got me into rpg's and Final Fantasy, and though it would take a few more years, eventually, metal and rock music too (Otherworld has been a staple of my favorite playlist since the first time I bought an ipod years ago). It helps that FFX is by far, my absolute favorite game ever, and its story is my favorite of ANY media.
I remember the first time I played ff10 and I heard this in the intro cut scene I legit did a double take at the game case to make sure I had the right game, otherworld is so different from what I was use to in a final fantasy game.
Honestly it's a miracle you didn't react to this one sooner. It's right up your alley! I absolutely love Otherworld. Hearing just the first few notes sent me right back into my childhood.
Otherworld is sort of the OG Final Fantasy track that kicked off the series getting absolutely nutty with trying other musical genre's and styles. Every other track on the OST tries to have some degree of cohesive style or compliment each-other, but this track is truly alien amongst the rest of score. This track actually pretty much bookends the game, first playing when Tidus's life is suddenly turned upside-down, and later as the battle theme for boss rush at the end of the game.
I remember booting this game up as a wee ten year old and listening to the Final Fantasy arpeggio on the menu screen and then hearing this a minute later after starting the game, it was quite the surprise. I initially disliked this, but I had no music taste at ten years old and after years of playing this game while growing up it was sort of a gateway to metal music for me. This game and in particular this song will always hold a special place in my heart. Great reaction!
This is another one of those songs where the visuals of the game playing along side the track, fulfills the impact. This is quite an easy scene to find, it's simply the opening scene of the game.
Trust me, watching the initial cinematic this first plays to, PLUS eventually getting to what I consider to be the TRUE Final Boss battle of FFX...this song didn't just slap different, back then, but outright got me bloody AMPED!
I just said the other day "We need to have Jesse Listen to Otherworld" on another video. I don't have a ton of good suggestions other than the final battle with Seymour, which is called "Fight with Seymour." Also I would strongly recommend "To Zanarkand." The Juxtaposition between this and to Zanarkand will blow you away as "To Zanarkand" is a beautiful piece on the Piano. I'll save further commentary for when you listen to "To Zanarkand." I will say... It might have helped Jesse if you watched one of the 2 instances this plays XD The opening Blitzball Cutscene OR the battle with Braska's Final Aeon. This song has a lot more emotion to it that you might first think as it's associated with the end of a world and a father's conflicted efforts to make his son a better man than he. Just to let you know too, in a friendly way, X is Ten. And this game came out in about... 2001. So your guess on the music era is spot on.
FFX was my first FF game and Otherworld was wonderfully jarring the first time around. 13 year old me thought it was going to be sort-of woven throughout the game (like for major bosses) but no! You hear part of it at the start of the game and then it completely disappears until the end. I'm actually doing a new playthrough of this game (don't ask how many times I've played through this game, because I've lost count) and even though I know what's coming, I always cry at the end. So now I'm very tempted to request one of my favorite pieces for my March request.
I kinda wish they linked you the version with the cinematic but then there is sound effects so I understand why they didn't. The cinematic is wicked cool though!
This song was such a crazy start to the game as it's so radically different to both of the prior Final Fantasy games that I played previously (Final Fantasy VII and VIII) and as a young man starting to get into Metal, this was an absolute shock and amazement at the quality of the banger early song. Unfortunately, until later games they didn't have anything that heavy in the game again :( I still love that song.
Yeah, this is still an Uematsu composition, as is the majority of the game's soundtrack, although it is the first Final Fantasy title where he wasn't the sole composer. He wrote about 60-70% of the music for FFX. It's after X that he took time off Final Fantasy. This particular song has a very specific place in the game and it's only played twice throughout, the rest of the soundtrack is quite unlike this and more in line with the other FF games as far as the music goes.
FFX was my childhood. I remember when I was in high school playing this song for my metalhead friend at the time and he was rocking out and when I told him he was like "This song is from a video game?".
More importantly than playing in the intro, it plays during the (semi-)final boss - the culmination of Tidus's inner conflict, and conflicted feelings, with his father. So this sounding all rebellious and almost edgy is absolutely no coincidence.
My dad played the end of this one or two days ago and I had the same reaction he did when it first started. I’m a metal head I didn’t expect that out of that final boss.
One of the things you have to keep in mind when listening to final fantasy music as a Abbott player of final fantasy for 20+ years now my self. Is that the music is always composed around an event within the game or the story. If you watch the actual clip from final fantasy 10 that has this music playing it makes way more sense. Even more so if you understand the events that are occurring then the lyrics make sense, In a nutshell understanding the lore of what's happening.
It makes more sense during the scene its playing with. Opening with Blitzball which is a hype scene and why so many ppl loved Blitzball in the first game then seeing Auron not knowing who he is and the transition to a new world.
Thanks for this, FFX is my favorite game of all time and hearing this always brings back those memories. Tidus theme and zanarkand are two good ones aswell.
It kind of is boss music. The first time you hear it in-game is right at the beginning when Sin (main antagonist) destroys a massive city and sends you to... another world. I highly recommend looking up "Sin attacks Zanarkand" and watching the cutscene.
I had just started really getting into metal when FFX came out so this being the opening song for it was rad as hell for me. VERY unexpected though yes. It's kind of amazing that nothing else in the entire soundtrack sounds anything like this, and yet the song does not feel out of place at all when it does get used.
I absolutely adore this song. It's so goofy and over the top, but it works so well thematically. You first here it as this fantasy sports player, getting ready for their next match against a rival team. The whole scene is there to be like the character getting pumped up, listening to this dumbass rock, thinking back on what brought them there. Specifically, they think about how their father was also a major "blitzball" star, and then just up and disappeared out of their life one day. Once the match actually starts, a massive disaster occurs, this giant monster tearing through the city and destroying everything in its path. You barely survive, being sucked up into the creature and transported to another world. After dozens upon dozens of hours venturing through this world, you find out your father also disappeared in a similar way, following the same path you followed in an attempt to destroy the monster. You find out he prevented the monster from returning, but only temporarily, by becoming its avatar. So in your final attempt to destroy the monster for good and stop the cycle, you fight your father, now twisted and malformed. And this track plays again for the boss fight. It's such a cheesy song, but the way it comes full circle after dozens of hours of beautiful orchestral tracks is such an amazing moment. It's like the character is throwing everything to the side, remembering where he came from, remembering how he's grown, and finally putting the past to rest. All with a dumbass buttrock track blaring in the background.
Yo, just stumbled across your channel for the first time. Just wanted to say that this song is deffs a massive contrast to the rest of the OST. Really threw me off when I first heard it, but I still loved it all the same. Great videos mate, keep it up.
I was in a Singapore airport. We had a layover and i found some PS2 set-ups. It had been a while since I'd played a FF game as 8 and 9 hadn't really clicked with me (though i enjoyed 9 more). Fired it up and was greeted with Otherworld. I was once again hooked on Final Fantasy.
Being greeted by Otherworld is literally how I got into rpg's as a whole. I had a ps2 demo disc that just straight up threw you into the opening cutscene, without even the brief build up beforehand you get in the full game. Had no idea what I was about to play, as I only barely had heard of Final Fantasy and had never played an rpg of any kind before. The most metal way to get introduced to an entire genre. FFX has been my favorite game ever since.
Since this was requested somewhat very often, I was intrigued on what this would be and ... absolutely not what I expected :D Especially not since I know a few other tracks from this particular FF xD Your "calm down" towards the end of the track was really good xD
A thing that i really love about this song it's that it was one of the first songs in the game and, at the same time, the song of one of the final battles. So, after having played a whole game with a totally different feel, almost out of the blue, you hear *this* during the boss battle, instead of the expected opera
This is qui vivra vera! I hope you have a chance to play the game or at least watch the opening FMV. It really makes more sense when you can see the actual song and what's happening in it. The song does fit the "world" it's played in. And it's an amazing cs for what was 2000 on a ps2!
9 was the last contractual game Nobuo did with SQEX actually. He's done work on the series after that obviously, but no longer as a direct employee , he went freelance has remained since. He's still up there as one of the best, but I would contend that Mizuta and Soken rival him now for their works on 11 and 14 respectively EDIT: The lyrics actually do make perfect sense, both within the opening FMV and the greater context of the plot. IIRC, Nobuo at the time was inspired by Limp Bizkit and wanted to try something similar for X's main theme , and so we got Otherworld.
Back in the early days of google, I tried to look information on this song and band, and the information I found was that when the song hit big after release, the band that played it was nowhere to be found, nor ever found again. You never know if it's true, but I always though it was an awesome legend that this band does such a unique FF tune, then disappears forever.
Thank you for your video. This track is unique for FFX, it plays during the opening event that starts the game but that's about the only time FFX has a metal heavy song. The overall mood of the game is different and most of the music tailored towards that specific mood. Minus battle themes and character themes
Great vid, watch this song over the intro cutscene. I did when I was 10 and it has burned into memory. Also it blends so perfectly with the game & story
I bought 7 when I was like 7 years old. Helped me learn how to read didn't even know what I was doing half the time. But I remember going to the store and buying FFX and coming home and watching that opening blitzball scene. My mind was blown!
Never played a mainline FF game, but I played the crap out of Dissidia on the PSP, and I found I loved this track from it being Jecht's battle theme when you fight him in the story. Had about the same reaction you did when it started playing.
This was the first Final Fantasy of the PS2, where they finally fully moved to audio recordings lol. Moving from 9 to 10 was kinda crazy in a few ways… There was voice acting, detailed facial animations outside of the completely CG cutscenes… First one with fully 3D environments too… At least in the mainline games… I forget when Crystal Chronicles came out and how many of those features it had… I need to try that game again… I’m not sure this is totally outside of the norm for Final Fantasy… While there wasn’t anything specifically along these lines, there were the odd similar tracks that got kinda heavy or had similar melodic themes or whatever… I’m not too surprised that it’s the same composer, even if it’s a bit of a surprise… But yeah, there is a fair amount of variety in Final Fantasy soundtracks anyway… As some have already said, this song kicks the game off in the futuristic city of Zanarkand, where the hero is getting ready to start a game of a crazy sport that’s kinda like handball, but inside a giant floating ball of water… Then a giant monster called Sin appears… Soon he’s transported to a new world… Or is it a new world? Could it be the past? The future? A parallel dimension? Or maybe it’s all a dream? Either way, the song comes back at the tail end of the game, as a boss theme… So good >_
While it was played in the intro of the game, it is also the end game boss fight music. It was basically the first real metal/thrash track in a Final Fantasy title at the time. I used to love replaying the end boss over and over just to hear the track.
X does have some lovely, gorgeous music in it. Otherworld definitely stands out from the rest of the soundtrack, but it's still a nice, filthy track to listen to.
Nobuo was until final Fantasy XII (12) and invited to make the main theme of ffxiv on each expansion till stormblood (the second one). Almost all the soundtracks from the 7 Remake were from him and it’s ending song as well.
One of the most intersting themes from this games is the Seymour- final boss battle theme (aka Omnis Boss theme I think). It is so crazy.. I still love it ..over 20 years after the game came out .. Edit: nvm, I just noticed that you checked it out already. Good man :)
Since I don't like heavy metal, I didn't like this song when I first started playing the game, but it grew on me as I continued and got the context / plot it's embedded in.
I think you would enjoy the first FmV scene that this takes place it. Homeboy world just gets wrecked, destroyed and then is placed "1000 years into the future." So, this metal song is just banging as his world crumbles.

Nobody expected that, which is funny cause this song is at the very beginning of the game xD Pretty sure this alienated a lot of fans back in the day. At first I wasn’t into it but multiple re-earring later it grew on me very fast.
Auron's Theme is literally my favorite song from this game!
It's much better than the auto tune, sell out song, Ariana Grande, that they put in ff13 haha.
Looking at the cover art for the OST and then hearing this would probably confuse the hell out of the average person
First heard played this game and heard this track when I was like 12.
I'm 32 now and it's still on my playlist.
The perfect song for Jecht in his Aeon form!❤❤❤❤
Anyone else stand on their head to see the look of absolute horror on Tidus's face when he sees the projectiles coming at the stadium? 😂
This is another one of those songs where the visuals of the game playing along side the track, fulfills the impact. This is quite an easy scene to find, it's simply the opening scene of the game.
I played it and the scene at the pond in Macalania Forest over and over once I got access to the Sphere Theater back in the day. Good stuff 😂
I'll save further commentary for when you listen to "To Zanarkand."
I will say...
So now I'm very tempted to request one of my favorite pieces for my March request.
i know ... my old 7k hours playtime memory cards still exist XD
I kinda wish they linked you the version with the cinematic but then there is sound effects so I understand why they didn't. The cinematic is wicked cool though!
To be fair, the song fits the FMV that it goes with very well.
This song was such a crazy start to the game as it's so radically different to both of the prior Final Fantasy games that I played previously (Final Fantasy VII and VIII) and as a young man starting to get into Metal, this was an absolute shock and amazement at the quality of the banger early song. Unfortunately, until later games they didn't have anything that heavy in the game again :(
I still love that song.
This game when launched, on PS2, with insane graphics and this song for the intro, blown away
FFX was my childhood. I remember when I was in high school playing this song for my metalhead friend at the time and he was rocking out and when I told him he was like "This song is from a video game?".
for context this is the theme for the fight against the main character's dad.
the theme seems out of place in this OST but it fits the guy perfectly.
I'm sure when you saw the cover art, this was exactly the kind of song you expected to hear😅
EDIT: I just finished watching the video and now I have CFH & Walk queued up in my Spotify
Back in the old days on file sharing sites people would always list this as by Rammstein due to the vocals 😂
Tidus theme and zanarkand are two good ones aswell.
this game opens with the apocalypse happening at a sports game with this song playing, can't get better than that !
I got it back then for my PS2 and the game started with this song and the amazing Opening Cinematic to it. It was amazing ^^
FIGHT. FIGHT. FWIIIIGHT
I remember thinking how cool this song was when I was like 7 seeing my older siblings play this game. Probably what got me into these games
All with a dumbass buttrock track blaring in the background.
i love how you have tekken 5 song music in the in the background, your the man , man
this damn song got me into metal as a whole. i had dissidia on psp and when this came on i replayed the shit out of the mission for days
When you see the blitzball tournament intro with Sin appearing the music make sense!
You absolutely have to experience this song in game. That opening scene and the boss where this plays. The music increases the hype 1000 fold.
This is my all time favorite final fantasy game. Granted 14 is a masterpiece to me but 10 is a very special game for me. Highly recommend it!
Yo, just stumbled across your channel for the first time.
Just wanted to say that this song is deffs a massive contrast to the rest of the OST. Really threw me off when I first heard it, but I still loved it all the same.
Great videos mate, keep it up.
The most hype opening for any game!!
FFX has incredible music.
FFX is my favorite Final Fantasy game, and my favorite piece of music from it, is the one called "To Zanarkand", but i honestly love all the music.
FFX has been my favorite game ever since.
you HAVE to see the scene this song plays!!
Since this was requested somewhat very often, I was intrigued on what this would be and ... absolutely not what I expected :D Especially not since I know a few other tracks from this particular FF xD
Your "calm down" towards the end of the track was really good xD
A thing that i really love about this song it's that it was one of the first songs in the game and, at the same time, the song of one of the final battles. So, after having played a whole game with a totally different feel, almost out of the blue, you hear *this* during the boss battle, instead of the expected opera
i have NEVER heard this in its entirety, only what plays to the intro hour of the game
It plays again towards the end of the game where you get to hear more of it
This is qui vivra vera!
He's still up there as one of the best, but I would contend that Mizuta and Soken rival him now for their works on 11 and 14 respectively
EDIT: The lyrics actually do make perfect sense, both within the opening FMV and the greater context of the plot.
IIRC, Nobuo at the time was inspired by Limp Bizkit and wanted to try something similar for X's main theme , and so we got Otherworld.
ooo tekken 5 moonlit wilderness... i love that song
Back in the early days of google, I tried to look information on this song and band, and the information I found was that when the song hit big after release, the band that played it was nowhere to be found, nor ever found again. You never know if it's true, but I always though it was an awesome legend that this band does such a unique FF tune, then disappears forever.
Yeah, most of the music in FFX is quite soft, but this is what the game opens with in the opening FMV.
It can feel like quite a mood whiplash.
This song actually does make sense in the context of the story and the character it represents.
I only found your channel a week ago and hoped that you would react to this considering the other FF videos. Thanks for making it come true. 😂😂
It's funny, I remember haaaating this song back when I was 10 and playing this for the first time. Really dig it now as my tastes have changed.
Moving from 9 to 10 was kinda crazy in a few ways… There was voice acting, detailed facial animations outside of the completely CG cutscenes… First one with fully 3D environments too… At least in the mainline games… I forget when Crystal Chronicles came out and how many of those features it had… I need to try that game again…
I’m not sure this is totally outside of the norm for Final Fantasy… While there wasn’t anything specifically along these lines, there were the odd similar tracks that got kinda heavy or had similar melodic themes or whatever… I’m not too surprised that it’s the same composer, even if it’s a bit of a surprise… But yeah, there is a fair amount of variety in Final Fantasy soundtracks anyway…
As some have already said, this song kicks the game off in the futuristic city of Zanarkand, where the hero is getting ready to start a game of a crazy sport that’s kinda like handball, but inside a giant floating ball of water… Then a giant monster called Sin appears… Soon he’s transported to a new world… Or is it a new world? Could it be the past? The future? A parallel dimension? Or maybe it’s all a dream? Either way, the song comes back at the tail end of the game, as a boss theme… So good >_
While it was played in the intro of the game, it is also the end game boss fight music. It was basically the first real metal/thrash track in a Final Fantasy title at the time. I used to love replaying the end boss over and over just to hear the track.
X does have some lovely, gorgeous music in it. Otherworld definitely stands out from the rest of the soundtrack, but it's still a nice, filthy track to listen to.
You want face melting metal? FFX got that. You want chill island music? FFX got that too!
The second time you hear this theme, it's all over for you, nothing else can compare to a moment like that in gaming anymore.
Ah yes, the theme of underwater soccer
YES I knew this was gonna happen eventually this is such a good song
I think you would enjoy the first FmV scene that this takes place it. Homeboy world just gets wrecked, destroyed and then is placed "1000 years into the future." So, this metal song is just banging as his world crumbles.
Oh I have been WAITING for this
