  • Virtual Shelling Southwest Florida at what I would consider a "locals" beach, Bunche Beach in Fort Myers Florida. I fell in love with Bunche Beach for many reasons and on this particular day I was looking for crowned conchs as well as some critters. And I found both!
    When you can't be at the beach, why not go virtual shelling with me every Sunday? I release a new video everyweek so when you can't be at the beach yourself, come virtual shelling with me and I'll show you the beach, everything I find along the way and I provide some humor and sarcasm at no extra charge - LOL!

    Those Oyster Shells make such pretty tingling sounds when put on wind chimes staggered so they hit the other shells in the wind. Those shells with holes & growths or color loss on them, will still SING about their life in the sea when strung on the wind chimes!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I imagine they would make a lovely sound. And my the looks of this beach, I imagine one could collect enough for a few wind chimes in one trip! 🐚

    I had read where a couple of people didn’t take weather seriously and got struck by lightning at Sanibel. I appreciate your awareness. I love little shells too- so great for crafting. Once again, your video brings a smile to my face. Cant wait till I get to live and shell🏖

      Yes, I also heard a few people were hit by lightning recently and I was really saddened to hear that. I love to encourage people to go to the beach, but I also want people to make it home safely. The lightning is not to be underestimated! Thanks so much for watching and I hope you find lots of goodies when you make it to the beach! 🐚

    My husband and I had to cancel our last two, yearly trips to Fort Myers. We are scheduled again in 2 months. I can not wait, I am always brought to tears when I stand in front of the Ocean, and pick up my first shell of the trip.
    Your videos give me a bit of that same feeling.

    Loved the minis! 26:25 is indeed a dwarf olive (also nicknamed the rice olive). Your horse conch cleaned up great! Great color, considering how large it is and it usually fades a little more quickly as they age. One time I found a bunch after a storm and they literally had a wall of periostracum and shell crust and where a huge pain to clean, but it was worth it - one of them was totally dark orange beneath! Thanks for taking us along as always!

      @SWFBeachLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, a queen helmet. I've only ever found pieces - good for you! It's been a while since I've even found a piece of junonia. Well, the J will probably be the next bucket list shell I try to find. 🤞🏻

  • @denisem6754
    @denisem6754 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yep, watch the weather! I love the minis, I’m partial to them because they are easy to pack and get back home. I really enjoyed the glassy, crystal clear water this week, so fun to wade around looking for beach treasure. Also, your giant horse conch really came out beautiful.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well you got that right - minis are way easier to bring home than the full size ones! I would be in TROUBLE if I ever vacationed somewhere with lots of great shells. Ah, I'd probably just throw away my clothes and pack the shells for the return trip home! 😅

    Hi beach friend,
    The little shells are definitely my favourite. They are so cute!
    Great to see all the critters on the water, so fun to see all the small fish around that crown conch when you filmed it under water.
    That dark sky really scared me. It amazed me that there were still people in the water when you were already walking to your car. Open water and lightning scares me so much. Glad you were sensible.
    It was very interesting to see how your finds cleaned up. I'll hope you will do that also in your next video's.

      Hello Netherlands Beach Friend! Yes, I absolutely have a healthy fear of lightning. We had a crazy wicked lightning storm last night - love to watch them from the safety of indoors!
      Bunche beach is so great for checking out what's living in the shells. I was happy the critters did not disappoint. And sometimes the shells might be in horrible condition but they'll clean up great. They just need a little TLC. Thanks for coming along and I hope you have a great week too! ❤️

    • @SWFBeachLife

      The sand is a bit different there so maybe it is minerals. The bottom has a brownish tint to it, making the water look brown, even if it's very clear. Very curious 🤔 I have been keeping an eye on classes to become a Florida Master Naturalist - maybe one day I will find out!

      I wonder the same thing - the water always looks brownish, but it's clear - if that makes sense. I think there is silt or mud or something that does discolor the shells but I don't know for sure 🤔 Thanks so much for coming along with me on my walk!

    Love your videos and LOVE Bunche beach! I still need to clean mine up from my trip in May!! I had slimy green ones from Bunche too! Very curious how they’ll turn out. This video was the kick in the butt I needed!
    How should I go about cleaning my slimy green crown conch shells best?
    Prob resoak in water to scrub with a hard bristle brush before bleaching?
    Then how long should I bleach?
    How long did you acid dip?
    Also I have one urchin. I’m going to watch your videos to see how you cleaned and preserved those. I can’t remember how you did those and if you used glue to seal. Saturday is my shell cleaning party day!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is what I'd do with your crowns. Soak in water to soften gunk and try to scape as much off as possible. Then soak in 100% bleach for at least a day. Then...dip in the water/acid for about 3 seconds. Ok to go longer if you think there is more cleaning to do but don't over do it.
      The urchins I collect I scrub and soak in soapy water - several times and let them dry. Then I seal them with 1 part white glue, 1 part water - 1 coat. Others like to put more coats on or use modge podge but I like a more natural matte finish. Just a personal preference. Hope you all your goodies turn out gorgeous!

    Oh, I work voluntary 2 days at an op shop and today a guy came in who’d lived in Florida. I mentioned I’d just got into watching your shelling videos and talked of a few beaches from your videos and the Florida fighting conche. He then informed me that some area/beaches used to be a lot lower under sea level? And something about kinda prehistoric (or something like that) which means a lot of quite unusual things can be found? If you get my drift Is that correct ?
    That’s the calmest beach water I’ve ever seen, more like a flat lake , 😆😂💙

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Florida used to be completely underwater and would be exposed and covered again as the glaciers melted and froze. The water level used to be as much as 100 feet lower! I'm not a fossil expert by any means, but you can absolutely find fossils here by looking in streams. Florida is so fascinating!

      Best shells really just depends on the tides and winds. There is no one best beach but Sanibel and South Fort Myers Beach are two of my favorites.
