Male groups has always dominated not just in the music industry. the success and achievements that BLACKPINK have done bests even that of their male counterparts is suprising. its very rare to see. Very difficult to do in the industry. And its crazy to think the achievements can be even greater if YG their label would release more content from these girls. maybe a strategy for longevity? No one really knows how his mind works. he’s just the kind of brilliant that just pisses fans off. Lol 😂 you wanna hate him but he’s consistent and produces top notch legendary artist.

You're so dead on about their real life persona being so different from their celebrity image. As was the case when Lisa used Destiny Roger's song "Tomboy" for a dance cover on her private TH-cam channel. The song was two years old and Roger was on the brink of bankruptcy. As soon as Lisa's dance video was released, Tomboy went viral world wide, charting number one in some countries, and charting in the top ten in many more. The views on TH-cam for Tomboy jumped from three million to over 38 million. Roger herself said that Lisa's global impact is so incredibly powerful, it literally saved her career.
When Rogers went to personally thank Lisa via FaceTime, Lisa refused to take any credit, giving all credit to how great Tomboy was as a song. Rogers in interviews kept stating how amazed she was on how humble and shy Lisa was.
With all this said, you should check out Lisa's dance cover of Tomboy. It's called Lilifilm The Movie. It's on Lisa's personal channel Lilifilm's

Abou YG’s statement: yes, he used to say the girls in 2NE1 were ugly. The Korean beauty standards are very strict and difficult to achieve. Of course it doesn’t make his statement acceptable but unfortunately it happens a lot in kpop

There is some context to what he said that is being left out. YG was always known to overlook the "beauty standards" and promoted girls with talent rather than just a pretty face i.e. Big Mama. YG received a lot of criticism for his girls not being "pretty" from knetz and he was addressing those critics with his statement.

BOY GROUPS have a heavy advantage over girl groups cuz they have got so many fangirls who would buy anything that they make and do, where as girl groups are held at more stricter standards in the music industry and as the pop industry is filled with lots of female fans who would find guy groups more attractive hence stan them, even with all this blackpink are 2nd biggest group in the world beating all other boy groups and are just behind bts, and they did that with total of just 23 songs

In kpop, the most famous and popular concept is the "cute", specially for girls. They are super feminine, romantic and sweet. Usually the songs are softer too. The “girl crush" is like Blackpink, something more powerful, with striking visuals and not that super sweet girly concept. I personally don’t like the cute concept so much, it depends on how it’s portrayed. A good example of cute concept is a group called Twice. They are slowly getting more mature but they still have that cute aesthetic and sound

Please, react to BLACKPINK Journey and Friendship. This video will explain a lot about their very close relationships that they formed over the years. Fun fact, that $37 million that guy mention is just an estimate that they made when BLACKPINK still on their World Tour. After finishing their World Tour in February 2020, YG officially confirmed that their World Tour gross more than $56 million. Unfortunately, BLACKPINK don't get enough credits for their participation in the songwriting of their songs. This is a fact. For example, Jennie admitted that she wrote Stay in one of the behind the scene video that I found on Twitter. It is clip of one of the BLACKPINK reality show on TH-cam. In that clip, Jennie reveal the reason why she felt very emotional whenever they performed Stay live is that she is the songwriter. Jennie literally cried when performing Stay live. I also found out that after they release As If Your Last, they have an interview. During that interview, Lisa admitted that she wrote the rap verse for As If It Is Your Last. She even said that it is longer than she thought it is. This interview was all over the news in South Korea. During an interview, Tushar Apte one of the producer who work on the BLACKPINK's song, Love To Hate Me, reveal that Danny Chung and Lisa write the rap verse for Love To Hate Me together. 😃 This is what Tushar Apte said during his interview,
Question: Was the first draft you submitted instantly approved or did the members share their feedback with you to rework on?
Tushar Apte's answer: We pretty much got it right the first time on this! Which isn’t common at all, but of course Lisa and Danny Chung had to go and write the amazing rap verse that really takes the record to a whole different level!
However, if you look at their credits for their songs such as Love To Hate Me, you won't find their name on the credit list for some songs. If anyone want to see the link for that Jennie's clip and those interviews that I mention earlier, just let me know and I will gladly give you the links for it. 😄

Two and a half years after their debut, they embarked on their first world tour with just 9 official songs. The tour as the video stated became the most lucrative ever by a girl group. What act, male or female, solo or group can boast that kind of numbers off just 9 official songs. That's the statistic that blow my mind.

The hardest thing about being a blink is the lack of content. Even right after a comeback I’m hungry for more. It’s crazy because the girls are constantly working on things. Their schedules are always packed. For example Lisa hasn’t seen her family in almost 2 years and her grandfather and uncle have recently passed away but she hasn’t had the chance to go to Thailand. Even though they are extremely busy I feel like we don’t see the content. That’s why blinks go crazy over any mention of the pinks.

Obviously you should check out all of them individually, Jennie's 'Solo', Lisa's LiliFilm dances, and Jisoo has some great covers like Clarity & yuki no hana, and Rosé also has another solo song called Gone. Just thought it was worth mentioning 'On the Ground' because of the message of the song she recently released.

Usually in the stereotype male group always dominated since normally guy wouldn't buy merch or even album. yeah many guys nowaday are changed but majority of fanbase are still girls anyway. so yeah that make male groups dominated the industry even in K-pop. like seriously even some small male groups from small company physical album sales are still can get 1M physical album sales. while girlgroups just 300K physical album sales are high enough to made them in top10 record for girlgroups already. so that Blackpink archived this far are impressive enough already.

    RE: GIRL GROUP QUALIFIER:
Boy groups have it easier because large groups of fangirls (The biggest buyers of CDs and merch) will buy multiple copies of CDs to help their oppas succeed. That BLACKPINK first full album (8 songs is a full album for a YG girl group I guess?) THE ALBUM sold over 1.3 million copies is historic as those are numbers of a very successful boy group (one certain boy group now sell 4 million copies of newer albums). BP broke a 52 year standing record in Korea for girl group album sales for THE ALBUM. It hit #2 on Billboard Hot200, which is a huge deal for a girl group but a few boy groups have hit #1 thanks to large devoted fanbase. A really really successful Kpop girl group (2 others besides BP and one recently disbanded as planned = limited contract from reality music contest show) will sell maybe 300k to 550k or so copies of album. As mentioned in the video, BLACKPINK's girl group predecessors at YG were very popular 2nd gen group and sold around 700k albums total in their 7 year career. Worldwide you hear more about boy groups, think about the ones in USA & UK compared to how much attention girl groups got at same time.

Ive been into kpop since 2010, and I would say The main reason that attention was on BlackPink was because 2ne1 was one of the most popular girl groups in kpop back then the 2 main girl group were 2ne1 and SNSD and since YG had been teasing this girl group, and they hadn't had a girl group since 2011 everyone was really excited. Peoples attention was on YG and wanted to see what was next when they finally came out with teaser pics for the members everyone was excited especially for Jennie because she had been teased the most with features on G Dragon's That xx, and Black and Lee Hi's song special. Thus when the actual 2 music videos came out people loved the swag and the quality of the music video. Ever since then they instantly became famous. The hype had been building and the songs were catchy and lived up to everyones expectations. People also liked the duality of their personality off vs on stage, and girls having edgy concepts was more rare in the kpop world but YG is known for their edgy more foreign swag so to speak lol.

@@michealtaylors I wasn't a big kpop fan growing up but knew of some groups like 2ne1 and snsd n how popular they were and I think the original poster meant the reason or partial reason for their quick rise and initial attention is from the kpop community who new about all about the upcoming hype, not the casual listeners or new to kpop/blackpink fans.
With that said, I think based on BP overall talent and persona, I think they would have reached where they are now regardless of having initial hype and quick rise to fame from the kpop community.

Boygroups are aimed towards female audiences, specially younger girls, while girlgroups aim towards more mature audiences and more towards male audiences and the general public.
K-Pop was and still is a genre where most listeners are female so yes it does make a difference and a girlgroup on the level of Blackpink is not just untouched in K-Pop, but worldwide.
The main reason why they say "girlgroup" and not just "group", is another group that is more popular at the moment. Blackpink is the 2nd most popular K-Pop Group at the moment at least, but maybe that changes some day. Boygroups just have big advantages, not just in Korea. Just looking back at the history of the most successful groups, the literal top 5 are all boygroups.
Girlgroups have a much harder time to get taken seriously cause they can't just impress young girls who are basically already impressed by boygroups when the members look good. Girlgroups have to work very hard so people take them seriously, while dealing with a lot more hate than boygroups, because like i said a big part of the K-Pop community is female and some of them have huge problems with other women being successful. Sounds weird, but everyone who is part of the community can confirm that i think. (except the young toxic girls of course)
Blackpink's success right now is already untouched by any other girlgroup...and they just started.

Girl Groups compared to other male groups are much more difficult to weigh and achieve society standards in the entire music industry and not just K-pop. Girl Groups receive more backlash and criticism in terms of Age, Beauty, Talent, Status, Body Shaming, Rumors, Hate and many more.
So for a girl group to achieve international recognition and such status with all of those achievements at such a young age within 4 years means that they have overcome all of those Backlashes and criticism and labels whatever society throws at them. Making Blackpink as stated in the video one of the best and if not The best.
If you think about it and try recalling the last popular international girl group in modern generation, One could argue that would be Fifth Harmony and Pussycat Dolls which was years ago. There's not a single girl group that can compete with Blackpink in this generation if you just base it on achievements alone.

19:53 You aren't wrong there regarding the group members' personal attitudes. They themselves are very personable and humble and do make friends with other singers and groups. It's just the larger overall company (YG) that make bigger decisions regarding their exclusivity and public image. It's the same thing with all non-independent artists or athletes and whomever in the US too. Your favorite actor or actress may be super personable but depending on the agency they sign with, or PR firm they hire, or endorsements, or studio they like to work for, etc., they'll be told to not attend certain events or not publicly hang out with people at other companies, etc. It's just that kinda thing.

Historically, boy bands have much more fans/success than girl groups but that mostly apply to (white) English-speaking boy bands like One Direction. That's why in the kpop scene, Blackpink has much more potential to do well in the American mainstream market!! They don't need to deal with all the prejudice against Asian boys and the general public require less musical authenticity from them than from the boys bands cuz boybands are often associate with the superficial image that they are all about the bubblegum bops.
Blackpink is so big that they outperform all their American counterparts but if they want to leave a mark in pop music history and enter legendary status like the Spice Girls. I wish they can have more diverse discography and more creative control over their work. They've already built the brand image so successfully - fierce girl power but bubbly on the inside with distinctive personalities and have a huge dedicated fanbase. I am sure they can now try experimenting with their music without worrying too much about the result. I can totally imagine Rosé staying in the studio all day having so much fun with writing her own songs. They are doing the luxurious concept to the maximum. It's now time to conquer the musical side that I don't see other girl groups doing that ever.
With that, Blackpink will earn more respect from ppl and even the insiders. Being the biggest girl group ever in history will be just a matter of time.

There were a lot of things I wanted to comment on but the biggest point I wanted to relay was that the internet is of course a tool of success for any artist these days but I don’t believe lit to be responsible for Blackpink’s success. If that were the case everyone would be just as successful but they aren’t. The #’s and records of the Pinks speak for themselves. There’s no arguing with facts and statistics. Something you mentioned was that the girls didn’t seem stuck up or better than everyone else and you’d be right. That persona is what their company wants but the girls are humble, down to earth, and love their blinks. Bad asses on stage and every day people off stage. This is why they have the enormous fan base that they have. Best of both worlds.

  • @lilianacruz211

In the part that they mention that they go to exclusive events and meet important people, it refers as part of the promotion, not that they personally don't want to be in other programs or get together with other people, but that the company takes great care of the events they have to attend to give them an exclusive image as a group, as not just any program can have Blackpink as guests, that depends on the company, not on them.

Also they were on a world tour for like an entire year. Also YG artist tend to have their own schedule. This video is kinda out dated. It is just a theory after all which everyone is entitled to. And they are extremely busy being global ambassadors and i cant imagine how many CFs they do and photoshoots, being a dance mentor in shows, drama movie, then solo work jesus. Definaley not what any other kpop groups have to juggle around thats including boy groups. The photoshoots must be insane.

14:34 I dunno if you've searched and found the answer after watching the video, but if not, "girl crush" is a label for kpop girl groups that basically just means... cool powerful women performing cool powerful songs. So like, in appearance and music, they're not just cute with pop music, or just sexy with r&b, or just hip-hop, or just punk-rock, etc. It's like... all the best bits of them all.

Lisa is fluent in Thai, Korean and English, she knows a bit of Japanese and because of her becoming a dance mentor in a chinese program she also started learning basic chinese.
Her english varies, from what I have seen. She understands english fluently but when she speaks I have seen her both be really fluent but also sometimes struggle with her speech - I am assuming it's because of the contact she has with the language varies so, when she is more distant from english, her speaking english fluidity decreases because that happens a lot when you are speaking a foreign language that you don't have contact with every day.

As you mentioned, this was released last year so some of their accomplishments aren’t mentioned but they now have the biggest selling album for a kpop girl group with over 1 million sales (this video showing their best selling being at 380,000 sales). It’s harder for girl groups to accomplish what boy groups do because a lot of fans are mostly female and are very dedicated when it comes to following groups, girl groups mostly have to rely on the general public which most just casually listen so girl groups tend to do better in charts and streaming than in sales of albums or tours but as mentioned before, the girls released an album in October that sold over 1 million, they just keep getting bigger and bigger! It’s exciting to see what they can do with each release.

The comment from YG about how he wanted BlackPink to be just like 2ne1 but pretty too I feel is greatly misinterpretted by most. I think what he was attempting to say is that 2ne1's concept was mainly the "badass" type, and they very rarely gave off a feminine vibe in their music videos like BP had done with a song like As if Its your last. Lets say 2ne1 was on the left side, while the right side is a cutesy girly type group. BlackPink fits in the middle in that they have the badass persona, but they will also go to the other side of the spectrum in a song or a styling as well. Which is also where the name BlackPink comes from.

Boy groups have more advantage compare to girl groups. Kpop boy groups will only need to face racism, while kpop girl groups need to face racism, sexism and ageism!

The difference between girlgroups and guygroups is quite massive. Boygroups generally have an advantage as fanbases are usually female fans (tending to lean to boygroups more). Now, BLACKPINK and BTS are really equal and compete with each other. Basically, they keep breaking each others records over and over. However, sales of BTS beat BLACKPINK hard.
As explained in the video, KPOP groups rely on many yearly releases for promotion, BTS is one of these groups. BLACKPINK is all about international numbers and promotion. Marketing and business strategy of BLACKPINKS company is all focussed on this. Only releasing one mini album a year, or even one single. Rarely appearances on TV shows, but promotion through high fashion companies, etcetera.

  • @warrenlfrank

YGE sees them, not just as a girl group, but as a name brand. It is not just about the music, but fashion, just to name one. All four are 'muse' for different big-name fashion houses) as well as, (Papa YG) wanting perfection. Teddy's songwriting, set design, choreography, lighting, and costumes. A lot of work and time goes into making MV's achieving this level, which stand out above the rest. The rounds on Music award shows, TV shows such as Running Man, Knowing Brothers, is South Korea's way to get exposure for groups and it works. It has always been YG's formula for doing things. The separation between the boy and girl groups is part of the K-Pop genre that makes it ..well K-Pop. Acceptance of a different way of doing things in the South Korean culture, such as Popular Korean music, is still met with resistance. Change moves more slowly than in the western music industry. Look at the backlash Lalisa has gotten from some local critics for being Thai.

  • @aske65
    @aske65 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

will try to answer what I can
most of your first questions boils down to the fans
Girlgroups tend to have more of the "masculine" persuasion, and boygroups more of the "feminine" persuasion. and they all tend to peak at around 4-6 years into their career, meaning at 21 there will be much younger girlgroups for the "masculine" persuasion to follow, that would be considered a risk, remember that at 30 you are considered a fossil on social media. how Blackpink counteract that, is by appealing to a more "feminine persuasion" audience by being girlcrush (blackpink has a pretty even distribution of fans, both in gender and in age (only preteens think 30 is a fossil, but they do dominate the social media)).
the fans are the reason for the separation in sales as well, all groups release albums with photocards and stickers, but the boygroups fans tend to want to own all them stickers of their favorite boys, and thus buy more albums per person to own them all, this is by far not as widespread with girlgroups, so the album sales are lower, even though the number of fans buying are the same.
a jungle to write that in a way where I try not to offend anyone.. probably failed, sry about that... more female fans means more sales, that's the bottom line.
Yeah YHS was a weird dude, not very nice in his way of saying things, one thing to remember is that Koreans have two distinct words for pretty, one for princess like pretty or cute pretty, and one for more cool pretty (and a third definition for beautiful), it's a different language and much is lost in translation, 2NE1 was without a doubt the cool charismatic kind of pretty, but were seen by the general public (and YHS) as not the princess pretty..... but again YHS is a questionable character at best.
sidenote. I remember in Korean class we had a bunch of girls who started learning because of a boygroup they loved (amazing that a group can inspire to learn a new language), anyways our teacher an elderly Korean woman, was talking about the different kinds of pretty, and the girls asked her, "so the boygroup is the cool pretty?" and she empathically declined that notion, they were definetly the princess kind of pretty... it is sometimes seen as a gender thing, but that is not the meaning of the two kinds of pretty (could be more kinds I simply don't know, had to stop classes due to covid)
the video is careful, because many anti fans get triggered very very easily, they do inspire confidence in many female fans I know, and that is awesome and should be appreciated more, but it will get a LOT of backlash to say so.
I think the channel creators study marketing, so keep that in mind, they have a tendency to overfocus on the mechanical aspect of the marketing, and that's fine, just good to remember that, the reason I say study, is because in one of their videos they used a selfmade SWOT to explain a point.... that is not something I have ever seen outside a classroom, and even then it was explained that a SWOT is more a brainstorming tool then a marketing tool by itself. love the channel though very well made and thought through videos.
it is 5 now, she added very basic Chinese and is learning it currently (she was/is a mentor on a Chinese survival show)
oh the good old scarcity principle, little sidenote it only works in a perfect economy, so not really applicable, in theory it fits, but because it is in a nonperfect economy it is fueled by intrinsic value more than fundamental value, the only reason it works is because the fans (hardcore and casual) place so much intrinsic value on the music due to the high quality and tendency to disrupt the market on release, so it is anticipated, it's in essence not scarce as we can always stream what there is without limit, but it is the impact on the status quo that makes it so anticipated, but on the other hand it is a fair question that, would they be as big if they released more? no one will ever know... but even that question drives demand through anticipation... love that principle so fun to think about.
it's a funny but faulty comparison, blackpinks fans originally came from Kpop only fans, so they would not care about other regions release rates, by now for western fans it makes sense, but most of their fans like kpop in general just prefer blackpink (I Know I am gonna get butchered for that comment)
anyways sry in advance for triggering anyone, it's just my point of view from the questions asked, I'm not right, I don't claim that, just what I found through my limited research, and own thoughts on the matter :)

All YG meant was that when they recruited the girls for 2NE1 they were only interested in their skills. With Blackpink they wanted the skills and the beauty both. They had no idea at the time just how perfect their choice of girls was.

In Korea the guy groups were always the top $ makers, they tended to stay together longer, and as a result more money was put into marketing them
KPop is know for just releasing a few songs every few months.... and some times thats all that happens. It's often about 13 months, on average, before a group releases a full album. But the are releasing "come backs" every few months.
Lisa does Know 5 now(Thai, English, Korean, Japanese and basic Mandarian)... and knows the basics of 2 more(Tagalog & Indonesian)
Jennie is so shy it's almost painfull, that is why she is always being protected by the other members. You see this especially in crowds(airports, etc.)
Sometimes the qualifier "Girl Group" is valid.... For Coachella it isn't. They were ther FIRST Kpop Group to play Coachella period.

Extra info: People may not see it or may not want to see it but they suffer under such a misogynistic company. There is a lot of male privilege in YG. Take songwriter and producing credit that YG male artists get but Blackpink doesn't. It wasn't until recently they got a few credits for their own work. The reason being the earnings from the songs go directly to the company rather than the girls. You've seen the Netflix documentary, so you've seen how they are trained to write, produce and Choreograph.. but for some reason they don't let them do that anymore after they debut. Even after all the hate they have received by the gp, the mistreatment from their own company Blackpink saved YG from bankruptcy.
