    Worked for Goodyear for 8 yrs. A tech did a brake job and didn't pump up the brakes when he was through. A tire service guy, we called them GMs, did his thing and then drove the car out.. Did he ever.. He reversed right through the overhead door screaming 'No brakes No brakes!' Wrecked the car, destroyed the overhead door, and nearly hit the service manager, all in about 5 seconds. I'll never forget that!

      What's funny, in a non funny way, is that happened to me once, though I didn't crash... We were 3 techs down due to illness, and I was servicing 3 bays at 1 time. I did a brake job and forgot to pump up the pedal. I got called away and came back to it later. The service manager was about to pull that car out when I said that I needed to take it for a ride, break the brakes in.. He was lucky that I did. I dropped the trans in R for race, and low and behold.. no brakes! I had the brainpower to stomp on the E brake pedal and come to a screeching halt about a foot from a wall. The whole shop went silent, then erupted with laughter. The lead tech said 'Let me guess what happened?' I was stoned white, as I figure all of my blood went to my feet. After my test drive, my service manager asked me how the brakes were, and gave me a wink.. Wasn't gonna live that 1 down anytime soon. That was 1997, and my friends still make fun of me for it!

      Adam Trombino---- i saw a guy do this about a month ago. Working as an advisor at chrysler, i stayed late to change the cap and rotor on "granny", my 99 altima. Tech was doing front and rear brakes plus a few gaskets. This guy threw it in drive because it rolled back on him. He forgot he did this so when he started the car.... Slam!!!! It sounded like an explosion!!! I never let him live it down! Ahhhahah

    Eric, I know this is an old video and you probably won't read my comment, but...I can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge, experience, and technique with us. You've saved me so much money and given me an invaluable education in how to take care of my own vehicle within the bounds of my capability. You saved me hundreds of dollars on a brake job on my Hemi Ram, and I know it's done right with far more attention than any parts swapper is going to do at the local swap shop. I've done my own brakes for years, but I had no idea the proper lubrication points and the fine detail stuff. Makes all the difference in the world. Seriously man, can't thank you enough.

    When I saw you take that load of brake rotors to the metal recycling depot, you gave us an impressive visual index of your shop volume. With such a huge volume, it is reassuring to learn of complications you've not yet seen. That said, in another field I found that even rare complications have a way of biting into the confidence gained of experience. We now live up a steep hill with a T intersection at the bottom, so a spongy pedal adds a whole nuther pucker factor.

    I always love to see how a brake job is done at SMA. I know most viewers get tired of them but practice makes perfect. I can remember being told that you're supposed to seat the brakes properly by doing several quick 40mph stops in consecutive order to heat the pads sufficiently. I don't know how true that is but old habits are hard to break. I like the Eric O. way better, honestly!!! Great video.

    You need a spray wash that's driven over to remove that salt. Since the city/county put it down, have your driveway slightly higher at the shop. So all the salt and water run back to the street where it belongs! Not a long carwash, just a quick spray under the vehicle. Another Great Video!

    You do 'em exactly the same way I've been doing them for as long as I can remember, passed down from grandpa and my dad. I even use the same brake lube, AND the same brake cleaner. 👍 Haven't had one come back yet either ... except after 50k miles or so. :)
    Saw that late 90's Suburban or Tahoe there in your lot there - we gonna see a vid on that one? Neighbor has one with 290k miles on it. Was repainted, and frame sandblasted and painted too, before the rot got her. On it's OE engine, and second transmission from what I've been told. I miss my '94 K1500 - the GMT400 platform was as tough as a barrel of bricks. A far cry from the POS GMT900 I'm driving now. I had less trouble with the '94 at 266k miles than my '07 with 92k .... but I digress. 😊

    Had to do the rear brakes on my 05 F-350 last week, every 3 years (30,000kms 19,000 miles) I have to replace the rear calipers the driver side one of the pistons was busted up in chunks. The passenger side the top piston was sticking had to replace that caliper too, so 550 dollars in parts later my truck got new pads and two new calipers. I've done brakes so much on Ford Superduty trucks I can do it in my sleep. I use the same brake lube on all my brake jobs never had caliper slide pins seize up and the brake pads move freely in the caliper bracket. I'm a firm believer in the purple stuff it works, pulling the brakes apart on my F-350 every 3 years or so and things are easy to come apart.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the more weight, the more braking force applied to the rear, probably finding out they're factory "undersized" when hauling heavy loads constantly.

    • @Graveltrucking
      @Graveltrucking 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For us calipers come semi loaded so a cleaned up rebuilt bracket comes with the new caliper, since I started using the purple brake lube sticking pins hasn't been an issue. I went back to using Motorcraft pads been using Raybestos wasn't really impressed with them.

    • @Graveltrucking
      @Graveltrucking 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 99 to 04 has smaller rear brakes than the 05 to current 250-350 trucks, they also use a different manufacturer for caliper on the 05 and up trucks. The rear brakes do get used on my truck I don't haul heavy but I live in the hills.

    I use thin film of regular grease...sometimes brake grease between the hub and the rotor and the rotor and the wheel. I also include at least one panic stop in the test drive. Make sure it is tracking straight.

    Since watching your videos I bought a case of Fluid Film so nope, WD will have to wait. Judging from the comments so far it seems your Sunday morning posts are popular. Your work is always "complete". That last 10% you put into verifying your repairs is uncommon elsewhere.

    Some of the Brake Pad Break in procedures are insane slam on brakes at 45mph 5 times then Light brake pressure at 15mph 8 times then Medium slam on brake 10 times at 50 like Come on With these company's that make brake pads they all have a different procedure I tend to do the sane as you Eric O they don't need to be 300 degrees to Brandish the pads they just need to be used to Mary the pads to the rotors good video Eric O @SouthMainAutoRepairLLC

    I have done quite a few brake jobs and never had any problems until one day with an old Buick Riviera with anti-lock brakes. I backed the calipers up with clamp without opening the bleeders (front brakes) and fouled the antilock mechanism with debris, which never worked correctly ever again. So I learned to never do that trick again. Once was enough for a lifetime. Hope you never encounter such. Of course no replacement parts were available due to vehicle age.

    Eric, add to your post or pre brake job test ride hit all four rotors with your infrared temp gun. You can catch allot of seized calipers and hung up pads or parking brake shoes and it only takes 30 seconds to do all four wheels

    G'day, Mr. O! I enjoyed the video! Terrific job on the replacement, front pads, and rotors on a 2013 Non-Hemi, Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. It maybe pretty routine, but I always learn something new! Thank you! Cheers! :-) 😊❤️🚚

    Love the purple ultra extreme. Since switching to it over a year ago and having done well over 200 brake jobs in that time I have yet to have any issue with it whatsoever. I am up here in the salt belt too (CT.) so if it were going to fail it would have by now. Also were is that shop that grinds ears and tosses hardware? Would love to educate them. LOL just kidding, but really? Keep up the great work brother. Salutations to you Mrs. O and the rest of the SMA fam....

    You got a guy that doesn't believe in brake hardware. In my town we got this guy that puts on caliper bracket bolts finger tight!

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      most vehicle **caliper pin bolts** only torque to 14 to 25lbs which isn't much, finger tight is too loose thought!
      forgot to say caliper pin bolts it seems and clearly misread where he said caliper brackets and not slide/pin bolts :(

    • @jonclark1288
      @jonclark1288 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Throttle bottle- caliper bolts are typically torqued to 20 ft lbs or so. Caliper BRACKET bolts are torqued to about 80 ft lbs

      it's no fun trying to explain to the customer why the brakes failed in 3K or are nearly on fire from stuck hardware in under 300 miles. or another shop ends up doing it and you get the flunky marker. best to just do it right the first time :)

    I've read a few people having Honda caliper pin rubber boot swelling problems with the purple Permatex. I personally use 3M silicone for the pins. Looks like Permatex has an 80653, reformulated to be compatible with EDPM and nitrile rubber. I know the purple Permatex is very wash-resistant. That stuff loves to stay on anything it touches.

      I've ran into that on various vehicles, with other caliper and pin grease types, seems most common with aftermarket rubber hardware..
