1st real food plots for me on the new land, last fall I closed on October 1st. And put down winter rye, so it looked like grass...lol the deer were mowing it for me. Now this year they are loving the selection, the buckwheat is a huge hit. And they are leaving the peas. And brassica alone for now...so you always have to keep notes from each time to help you know what your herd is into. I am in the far northeast Wisconsin and no agriculture land around so, the fun is just seeing how they respond to what is offered

Just drilled purple top and radishes a few weeks ago into my plots around the 4 acres of corn I have and on another property I own. If I can find someone selling rye I'll be putting that in again in a couple weeks. This rotation did really well as I let the rye grow up this spring and summer for the turkey poults. It worked like a charm. I have a hen and 8 little ones that went from grouse sized to chicken sized and none of them got picked off. It also worked to keep does from turning it into a doe factory. I know decaying rye can pull nitrogen from the soil if you let it grow up but for the tradeoff of helping the turkey population it is worth it to me. The brassicas still do pretty well. Glad I've been watching your channel as this system is working really well.

Started with a single shot rossi 20 gauge my mom got me more $75. Never had luck for the first 6 years I hunted. Just planted the sweet brassica blend and fall forage on our plot. We divided the plot in half (we are space limited currently until we can get more clearing done in the spring. Our plot is almost an acre with an apple tree in the middle.
We hoped to provide both options figuring the fall forage would come up first and give the brassica’s a little less attention as they took hold. Hopefully we were correct, next year it will be easy to flip flop crops and maybe allow us to take advantage of the nitrogen pockets created by the brassica and tillage turnips every other year.
Clover will go down later in the year for spring frost seeding. Just not sure exactly when to seed that just yet.

I've tried it three years in a row now with maybe10- 20% success. I plant into corn or soybeans as soon as the leaves start to yellow but very little green ever shows up. The best luck I've had was rye grain and tillage radish but even those are very sparce. I'm in southern Michigan planting into clay in one field and sandy loom in another.

As late as it is, I was thinking about getting rye seed in the off chance we get wet weather in the next month or so. Would you agree with this thought considering that may be the only thing that would have much chance to grow under the circumstances? @@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Jeff, love your videos but I'm confused with what do I plant next year in my food plot after planting brassicas on both sides of my plot. You have Radishes (part of the brassica family) in one mixture with buckwheat and peas and then on the other side you have your brassica blend , I thought you shouldn't plant brassicas in the same place 2 yrs. in a row.
