In this video, I share my thoughts and strategies using winter rye to enhance, fix, or simply start a late food plot program.
I share details about how rye can be used as a cover crop in a rotation. How it helps build critical organic matter in lighter soils (sand based soils). And also how rye can carry deer well into the following spring.
There are many ways to implement rye into your food plot program. And also realize, if you're in the northern tier of states, you still have time to implement a fall food plot for 2023.

Anyone thinking about starting a food plot should start with Winter Rye before they try anything else. It is the most tolerant and easiest to grow. Plus, the following year the seedbed will be much better if you are no tilling.

Where do you think it ranks just in terms of attraction to deer? I've heard oats is #1 but I never hear anything about rye other than how well it grows.

@@daddylee4216i live in ag country but high deer density. Rye is about the only thing i can grow that they cant eat to the ground. Depends on what part of the country you are in though and deer density. If you are south mix oats and rye 50 50 maybe? They freeze out early here so i just throw a few pounds in each rye plot

Last September I planted 3 acres total of cereal rye and ladino clover. I let the rye grow until near the end of July as there were turkeys nesting in it. I did not want to interfere with them. Since I cut the rye, I have the best-looking clover I ever had. I have mowed the clover once since I cut the rye. Sept 8 this year I planted an acre of CR & ladino in a failed Chufa plot. We got 3 inches of rain after that. They rye is about an inch already. I also plant turnips some, & mix rye with it. Where I plant that I frost seed that section with clover in the late winter. Thanks for the video.

I guess I was only reiterating something I'd heard a few times, and have seen once or twice only. Thank you for your input. Much appreciated.

How long does it take to sprout? I planted a week ago and it hasn’t yet

Was it broadcast or drilled? How much rain have you received since?

@@EpicWhitetailHabitatLLC broadcasted. Rained the next day and rained two days ago

Being Patient is key. But generally you should see germination within 5 to 10 days. Many factors play into the visual.

You don't like clover with your rye?
