These are not towns but shopping centres. Such rural shopping centres can expand or decline on account of several factors 1. Proximity to big towns: The middle class from those areas invest in the surrounding towns. 2. Mobility/ easy communication: This makes families who earn from farming to do their shopping in the surrounding towns where they will get everything, from farm tools to food items not available on the farm. 3. Young men either go to the towns daily for various economic activities or have completely migrated. 4. Most of the food including milk is produced at the family unit. This beats the logic of having many shops. So, while it is true that those shopping centres came up during the coffee boom in the 70s, social economic dynamics are completely different now.

I think the main problem is the factor of rural urban migration where most of the people in our communities are shifting to towns and urban areas living there villages empty and dead..
Agriculture, the lifeline of the towns is also not bringing much in terms of returns. People would not otherwise remain in big towns/cities, because there are no jobs and relatedly, not enough money circulating to sustain a large number of businesses. Before 1990, few people were struggling. People were able to educate their children comfortably. The economies in the area have not recovered since, not even during Kibaki's time.
Village to Town TV, do you really what a town look like or even a shopping centre? Quite amazing...you need to do some studies and research what a town is...

The reason some towns in Kiambu County don't do well is because of armed robbery. This places seem to host bad boys and they will visit you whenever they realize you are doing fairly well.
This is my late mum's home area. Most of her relatives are spread out in Mùtatì, Nembu, Kìbicoi, Kiamworia and Gitarì. I've never lived in these places but I frequent them. They definitely ARE NOT zombified.
Great video, voice clarity and true content. The one sided town was a popular planning layout in those days with commercial plots surrounding a market place at the center. These townships have seen their better days. The economy was coffee driven and families could afford vehicles especially landrovers and peugeots pickups mostly to ferry coffee beans to factories. Everyone had money even teenagers from picking coffee especially during Decembers. I blame the failed economy to the government who set coffee market policies. The community were caught unaware and most youths failed to get higher education. Some resulted into alcohol due to depression and others moved to better towns eg Ruiru, Githurai for jobs. There is a very zombie township in the area called Mariige. I was told a curse was spelled to it by traders who were once ripped off their goods. These townships are well connected to big towns like Kiambu, Thika and Nairobi. Thanks to new roads, a drive to Thika is about 30mins. The townships are parked with true culture, farm fresh products and healthy environment. The community fabric is supportive and full of love.
