The IPS and pod drive units, especially with the integrated bow/ stern thruster configuration with a joystick, truly make it easy to operate a vessel in close quarters and while docking. The issue with this technology is that when it fails, many pleasurecraft operators lack the ability to manually operate their vessel, meaning they are unable to manuver without them.
Although the pods may be fantastic for docking and maneuvering, looking at everything you have gone through with replacing it, let alone the cost, I'll stick with a straight inboard. Great work guys!
Great job getting the POD in. The video footage of the shipyard brings back memories. Some of those boats there have been there awhile. I guess cheaper than dockage. We are currently in Grand Haven Michigan. I’ve never seen more boats than I have here nonstop all day cruising by.
Thank God I have a full displacement 44 DeFever trawler with stabilizers and a walk in engine room. Everything is mechanical with non turbo engines. Yes I'm slow but I get there. I don't envy that job you're doing. Every boat yard we pass has boats out with pods being worked on them and don't even think of bumping the bottom!
Great job on the POD. But for its complexity, fragility, cost and vulnerability(props forward), it just makes me glad that I don’t have one. They are great when they are working.
Lol, oh, the hurry up and wait term. I still say that to this day 😂 and remember, if it ain't raining, you ain't training 😂 and pod are awesome, but if you don't have room, they bite, as you know, lol but I have never worked on pods
Shafts all the way. IPS's are just a modern version of a stern drive. If you want movability get a Twin Disc EJS joystick, that system is unbelievable. Someone once said, 'You have to be wary of a manufacture that puts its gearbox in salt water'.
Have you ever replaced a missing pod? If the boat runs aground and the pod gets knocked off is there safety systems to keep the boat from sinking. I’ve heard they have hydro doors that can be shut in the event of one getting knocked off.
How do you know if they’re straight? They seem they could be parallel to each other but not straight to the boat. I imagine the yard people don’t want to get anywhere near those pods.
All my time that I had for my Coxson Qual in the navy counted towards my total hours plus, I had a lot of time driving boats down here in Key West years ago
I wonder if the extra cost of maintenance of pods outweighs the efficiency of pods over straight drives? Also, regarding the 0% chance of rain - those of us who ride motorcycles can tell you that in the summer with a 0% prediction of rain and no clouds in the sky, we can drive through drenching rain that comes from absolutely nowhere. Go figure.

All Boats are tough on the wallet even outboards are $22-26k depending on what you get and this price is just to put on a 19-22ft boat. We’ve bought 2 this year.
Boat engines are way too complicated these days. So many sensors and electronic controls. The old engines I worked on just ran and ran with just the usual checks. If you had a problem you could find the fault by just listening to them.
If you’re going to be doing a lot of these, you’re going to need a better install rig. Think “radio flyer wagon” on steroids with powered wheels, hand crank jack stabilizers, hand crank lift, X/Y shift, tilt and rotate.
after seeing this, will be shafts only for me, the costs would be astronomical, and if you hit something at speed, what then blup blup into davie jones locker, with shafts busted prop, bent shaft, maybe not sink, but if you rip off a pod or 2 your done for the day
Martin you can hit your rudder and be done for the day and sink! We had a boat nearly sink but it made a run for it to get to the slings he was on our schedule that day to get bottom job etc. on his way over to the yard he hit something. Boat was filling with water fast.
Wow what do you think ... 👉how did we do with this IPS installation? ... Where the disaster began ▶ th-cam.com/video/-uy00acNPMg/w-d-xo.html

I will take my shaft driven boat thank you
We can appreciate shafts too!
Up here in Michigan my wife has officially retired from the “slug bug” competition with me, another great video guys.
Although the pods may be fantastic for docking and maneuvering, looking at everything you have gone through with replacing it, let alone the cost, I'll stick with a straight inboard.
Great work guys!
Thanks for watching all these crazy episodes… it was a lot of working! But, we all tried to have fun too.
Great job getting the POD in. The video footage of the shipyard brings back memories. Some of those boats there have been there awhile. I guess cheaper than dockage. We are currently in Grand Haven Michigan. I’ve never seen more boats than I have here nonstop all day cruising by.
Yup Jim boatyards seem to collect boats was the same at Robbie’s!

It’s not good for any running gear to hit the bottom!
Great episode! Keep those cameras rolling! Congrats on the reinstall/service! 👍👍
Yup big job … 👍
@@WillFixThat 👍👍

Yeah, it’s a lot of work. But great when they are working… amazing maneuverability!
lol we just got another pod job!
@@WillFixThat
Nice to know what you’re doing and authorized by the manufacturer. Looks like a ton of fun to align pod and engine 😂
@@SkypowerwithKarlactually our youngest guy did most of the work with Matt video will be out in a couple weeks I recorded the removal today.
Pods are great but I would think the maintenance would bankrupt me!
Well like anything all boats need maintenance.
Lol, oh, the hurry up and wait term. I still say that to this day 😂 and remember, if it ain't raining, you ain't training 😂 and pod are awesome, but if you don't have room, they bite, as you know, lol but I have never worked on pods
Love hurry up and wait … us old timers would get it! As you see honeybun this was a big job and not easy with little space. Our guys did awesome!
@@WillFixThat I think they did an amazing job with the situation they had in hand.
@@honeybunbandit1definitely 😮
@@WillFixThat now, yall need to get a communication head sets for talking to each other instead of on the phone, lol
@@honeybunbandit1lol we’ve been yelling at each other for years one of us inside and one outside.
Here on Tampa Bay Beaches the weather ppl put a sun, cloud, raindrop, and lightning bolt each day to cover all their basis, that’s Florida for sure!
OMG … for sure covers their arse!
Pods are cool but when there's a issue it's a headache. Just ask carnival Vista.
Omg how are you Scott? You know all running gear issues are a headache.
Shafts all the way. IPS's are just a modern version of a stern drive. If you want movability get a Twin Disc EJS joystick, that system is unbelievable. Someone once said, 'You have to be wary of a manufacture that puts its gearbox in salt water'.
It’s a personal preference thing for sure. Some people rave about out them.
Good morning 👍
It’s a very warm morning 👍
Have you ever replaced a missing pod? If the boat runs aground and the pod gets knocked off is there safety systems to keep the boat from sinking. I’ve heard they have hydro doors that can be shut in the event of one getting knocked off.
Yes they do shear off and there is a shut off valve on the wet exhaust. But usually when they break off they damage the hull
Great fun following your job. What was that yellowish/ gold paint that was on the pods and props. I assume some sort antifouling. Looks like mustard😊
Prop Speed.
The fun of calibrating to PODs we have to deal with it all the time when we transport boats and remove the pods we just did a 55 Marquis with 3 pods
Nice Raymond! 😂
What are those drones used for?
Those pods look like a pita to do anything with.
The sail drones are used for surveillance and weather.
Good to see the pod getting done,,, how much are you going to ask for the other boat you have
We are asking $58k for the Polar test ride this week it goes about 48mph. The guys don’t want to sell it lol. Matt says too much fun.
Nice work.
Thank you 🙏
🤣🤣🤣 Thanks for the shout out
Great meeting you Sheldon! Let’s meet up sometime. 😊
Great video, makes me thankful I don’t have a large boat
Hey Mickey small boats are costly too!
Love your videos Matt and love the fact that your mom is so close to you and your camera woman. Awesome family 🛥️
Are you being being smart? 🤣
That’s exactly why I don’t get pods… if I can’t fix it in my garage I don’t want it
Kind of makes sense 😊
How do you know if they’re straight? They seem they could be parallel to each other but not straight to the boat. I imagine the yard people don’t want to get anywhere near those pods.
There is a calibration procedure. You can check it in water also.
How do you acquire yearly sea time for your master's license?
All my time that I had for my Coxson Qual in the navy counted towards my total hours plus, I had a lot of time driving boats down here in Key West years ago

Yeah. I used my Navy time too.
Hey Florida weather 😂
Florida Melt Down.
Spot on🇺🇸👊🏻
Yes sadly and still broke.
I'm just a weekend warrior but I probably would move up to a larger boat but it seems like maybe not lol
lol does size matter? Maybe more headaches?

Go figure weatherman predicts No rain and it pours and they still get paid for being wrong most of the time.
There’s two of those US Navy spy/sail drones here at Rodney Bay Marina. LCA.
Like I said I’m sure they have stories to tell 🤣
You are pretty impressive
Thanks Elwood just working hard.
Hate to see that repair bill
Ah it’s just another boat …. They all are pricey! But, they give you memories of a life time.
IPS is not for the weak wallets. When they work fantastic. Shaft drives all the way👍

PODS, disaster ! Stay away , I learned my lesson by owning a GB 43 with pods. Sold boat within a year. Could not take a trip without a problem…
lol that’s boats NOT pods 🤣 boats always have an issue even brand new ones!
Drive Pods... NO ..... Tide Pods... YES
Well maybe 🤔
Shafts and rudders
They have their problems too but maybe a little easier to work with.
Boat engines are way too complicated these days. So many sensors and electronic controls. The old engines I worked on just ran and ran with just the usual checks. If you had a problem you could find the fault by just listening to them.
It’s the same with cars and trucks these days.
Wow, how much was that job?
Yup a price fix ….
I have been told Volvo has always been the drive to stay away from ….. in any form
All manufacturers have issues. Try A Zeus pod sometime😖
No pods for me, too complicated.
Yeah can be a bit more.
Ok for rich people that don't have to worry about working on them and just pays the bill.
Well boats are pricey and any engine is expensive!
Reason # 1,103,000 why not to have pods..lol
Well all running gear takes some coordinating and effort to remove or install! These jobs take time.
I think that could be said for Volvo penta in general.
any one that buys a boat with this type of out drives deserves to pay the price for this type of out drive system, this is not a good system.
They r actually reliable. Problem was the prop strike.
This electronic engineering has gone way overboard 😂 Has become rediculus
Just think … it will only get worse. I mean think about it with this ChatGPT stuff.
Typical Volvo far too complicated, a temporary extension rod on each prop shaft and a tape measure.
The laser makes for good video 🥹

We'll keep that in mind! Just depends how many we do …
PODS👎
Depending on one’s preferences…. It’s amazing technology!
