      under recognised maybe, but definitely not underrated. They're all word class musicians playing on internationally acclaimed records. Kamasi has been nominated for a grammy, brit-award and emmy. Stephen Bruner won a grammy.

    I feel like every aspiring, hard working musician who is trying to find their place, soul and style should listen to this snippet. Fuck all that over-the-shoulder phony-ass crusty industrial shit, we are here for the culture, the art, the history, the community and to express ourselves and to be heard for our ideas

    • @michjackfan1534
      @michjackfan1534 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. A lot of the old industry culture relies on appearance And current(cy), and not really on ability and vibes. I also experienced that first hand where i felt so out of place, that I had to make my own space elsewhere. I think that’s why a lot of indie genres have such an eclectic mix; indies literally defy the industry standards and create their own paths.

    can relate to this 1000%. the jam scene in the city i’m in has a vibe that i don’t fw, at least for drummers…..it’s the same dudes playing the same type of chops. talented ass dudes for sure, but they all sound the same.
    i’ve lost count at this point how many jams i’ve gone to and was disrespected, flipped off, or i’d just get on the kit and some dude comes up and asks “yo can i play”, or i’m treated lesser than because im a girl. i’ve been playing for 16+ years mind u.
    have definitely gone home a handful of times in tears, spirit shot. first time it happened it took me MONTHS to hype myself back up and believe in myself, in my playing. took a few times of that shit happening again for me to completely stop going to “organized jams” altogether. started a little house jam thing w a friend of mine w an emphasis on inclusivity, and it’s at my house so none of that BS lol.
    thanks for listening to my ted talk 😅

      Sounds a little like Austin. Anyway, keep it up. That’s some BS FOR SURE. Don’t let it sour you to some good open jams in the community, wherever you’re at. But I feel ya, and I’m glad you started your own thing. Create community ❤️🙏

    • @joshuaadelaja9996
      @joshuaadelaja9996 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      cool to see you here, I've actually been to one of your jams before and had a really nice time! hearing your story is really affirming because I've had a lot of similar experiences drumming at spots in the city and it's honestly just made me stop completely and stick to only playing guitar at jams because I get the least amount of assholes ready to kick me off if I stick to that. I struggle with feeling nervous and not good enough at jams to the point of freezing up way too often because of this kinda energy.
      you're really talented and your style has honestly changed my perspective on drumming a lot, so I'm glad you're still pushing ✨🙌🏾.

    I like that he said "I wanted to get all leaders so that we couldn't have egos." It really shocks me sometimes to play with people that want to be "boss" or just have someone to solo over. The music is always much more fun when everyone is listening to and supporting one another, instead of someone trying to create a personal brand/legacy on everyone else's labor.

    I’ve never gigged in LA, but I’m kind of surprised that people still hold “auditions” for gigs. Aside from talent, I assumed people got gigs from networking and posting online (which I guess still counts as social networking). He explained how the MD’s host the auditions to get dough from the record companies, but so people also host auditions to hire “budget” players?
