    I'm a single dad that needs to learn to sew / mend. I have no previous knowledge of sewing. I've been computer programmer for 20 years and the way you presented the information was very clear and understandable. If I can go through these videos and understand them, then anyone can. Thank you sew much!! (see what I did there)

    You are an excellent teacher! I love the way you reinforce each lesson, such as "foot up, needle up" and "needle down to start sewing". These are things I forget. I was wondering about the zig zag stitch you said to use for knits. It is so tiny. I thought it had to be larger. Watching all your beginner videos have been immensely helpful. My mother was a seamstress, tailor and also made slip covers and draperies as a professional. I was always sorry that I didn't pay enough attention, and now she's gone, so thank you for your professional teaching here. It's truly appreciated!

    Please create a Day 6 on *How to Read Patterns*, from the beginning (looking at a big book) to the end.

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  9 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      +Kimberly Norton of course I have been thinking about this and will do one over the coming weeks. I was planning on using a commercial pattern and showing how to read the envelope, choose a size and read all of the marking etc. Is that what you are looking for?

    • @kimberlynorton
      @kimberlynorton 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Made To Sew Yes, that is what I am looking for, but also BEFORE getting the pattern. There are these big books (catalogs?) that you look through to find the pattern that you want. Once you find the pattern then you go to the drawer with that particular pattern, the second part is to be able to read the commercial pattern.
      I went to the store and had no idea as to what to do with the big catalog books so I had to search the drawers to look at the patterns, but what I was doing is totally backwards.

    • @kimberlynorton
      @kimberlynorton 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honestly, you are the best teacher I’ve come across.
    When teachers have been sewing for years it’s very easy for them to forget and refer to a techniques in jargon. As a beginner I am left clueless.
    You are clear and instructive. Keeping it basic and easy to understand. I already feel more confident after watching your videos and have learnt so SO much more than I have in the last 3 months of watching tutorials.
    Thank you

    This series was excellent. Thank you for putting together such a comprehensive, all-encompassing tutorial. I bought a sewing machine without any clue as to how to use it. I taught myself how to use it by studying the manual and sewing small projects and clothing repairs, and recently had a go at following an easy pattern for a dress. I bought a used pattern and zipper from a goodwill store, and cut the fabric from a cotton fitted bedsheet I no longer needed (I was afraid of investing too much money in a project without first attempting a dummy run!). I'm pleased to report that the trial dress turned out pretty well, and I've learnt how I can improve my "real" dress. Many of the problems and frustrations I've encountered from prior sewing attempts were addressed in your lessons, and the sections on clipping and corner sewing were really helpful for my next pattern project. A big takeaway too was lowering the needle before I start sewing - too many times have I had the thread ping out of the needle as I started sewing, thus wasting precious time rethreading. So again, thank you very much for your efforts in putting together this series.

      Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm so pleased that you have become confident enough to sew your own dress. I wish you success with many more projects.

    Thank you Aneka! I've just recently inherited a Singer sewing machine and decided to give it a go. I'm chuffed to bits that I found your beginners course, I was overwhelmed with where to even start. Your tutorials are clear, easy to follow and methodical. Just what I needed! You appear to have a tutorial for everything which is extremely reassuring. Because of your course I've dived straight in to making a top, I'm mid flow at the moment and I watch one of your tutorials for each section I'm about to tackle before I do anything. Fingers crossed...I'm about to start the facing 🤞

    Thank you for this series of videos for beginners, Aneka. You've been very clear with your instruction. I have a bad habit of telling myself I won't be able to do things such as sewing, due to being partially sighted, but I feel much more confident after watching these videos. I have two sewing machines, a modern one and a lovely old manual Singer 15k, just sitting there. I'm definitely going to get one out and start practicing now. I've added the videos to my 'watch later' list so I can keep coming back to them when I need to. A great little series......

Good luck, Aneka :-))
