    Thank you SO much for this video. I love my garage-sale Windsor chairs. But I have 2 out in the garage that I've been afraid to have people sit on because the spindles have worked themselves out. This video gave me the confidence to repair them myself!

    Personally I use a Pilot drill bit with a countersink & sawdust mixed with wood glue to plug the holes 👍👌

    Thank you! We got kitchen chairs with the spindles from Good Will & 2 of the spindles are loose. I've been racking my brain on how to fix them. This is perfect, thank you!

      You've been racking your brains? and they are from Good Will? Geez....go back and spend another $2 for the chairs!

    Thank you Michael! I've watched several videos on how to fix the problem I have with ALL my dining room chairs, and this video makes the most sense to me. A couple of years ago I bought an older home and the air is so much drier in this house than where I've lived before and it's caused all the rungs on my dining room chairs to pull loose. I think wood glue is helpful, but I want the chairs to STAY fixed for as long as possible. I am totally trying this on my chairs! I've never done this before so wish me luck! :-)

    Have you ever tried some 2-part epoxy? It can be a little messy but, once you get the hang of it you'll love it.

    • @gregorymosher5008
      @gregorymosher5008 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You never use epoxy on joinery... a quick disassemble and clean the old glue, re glue and clamp, done

    I tried a 1/8 drill bit and the 8 X 2.5 screw snapped in half when I tried to install it. Was my drill bit too short for the screw length? Also, I was attempting to fix the right front leg of the chair to the dowel.

    Is there a special tape that you wrap the end dowel with to give it thickness before you glue it back into the hole? Or am I cross crossing some other technique??

    • @MikesGarage96
      @MikesGarage96  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can shim it with wood shavings, or coat the male end with glue, and wrap it with some thin thread before reassembly. These techniques are better if you want to keep the appearance as original as possible. In my method in the video, you can see the screw head, but it won’t come back apart. I was going for function over beauty. You could also use screws, but before putting the screw in and after drilling the pilot hole, you can counter sink the hole so the screw sits below the wood line. Then you could take some wood putty that matches the stain and cover them. The way I did it here is just one of many ways

      Find a woodworking shop in your area that has a wood lathe so he can make the same spindles you need

    What does it mean when you said you were torquing your drill? What is the process and what does that do?

    • @MikesGarage96
      @MikesGarage96  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drills commonly have a torque adjustment on them, near the chuck. Just turn it down some so you don’t strip out the wood or screw

  • @LarryBinFL
    @LarryBinFL 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Screws, when you can get to the joint to glue it? That is ridiculous.

    • @MikesGarage96
      @MikesGarage96  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Larry B I glued these joints with every type of wood glue at the store. It would last about a month, then popped back loose. Guess you never had kids that like to lean back in their chairs. I did this over three years ago and guess what? Not a one has came loose. I’d rather see a screw head than to keep busting my ass

    • @stephenlomas8555
      @stephenlomas8555 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Larry B I totally agree with you glue nowadays is stronger than the wood itself. If he had cleaned the old glue off before and cramped them while the glue was going off you wouldn't need to use screws. Screws should not be used in chairs of this or any other style I'd not let this guy loose near any of my furniture.

      @@MikesGarage96 Yes, I tried wood glue and guerilla wood glue; then I had my handyman use some other professional glue and a nail gun with very skinny nails - a month later the spindles were falling out. This looks like a better method.

    Maybe countersink the screw heads and add a dowel plug to hide. Other than that thank you for the video.

    If you're going to use screws, you could countersink them and cover with a dowel cap; would look better.

    Hi I bought a use table with chairs the only thing is that the chairs need some work the lady said that her puppies chewed on the chairs so they are a little damage how can I fix them by the way the chairs look just like yours

    • @MikesGarage96
      @MikesGarage96  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they're small scratches and you're just wanting to make it look a little better you can buy a pack of furniture touch up markers from a home improvement store. You pick out the color that best matches your chair and color in the scratches. If you want to fix it the 'right way' you will have to sand the scratches out smooth, match the color stain and stain the wood that you sanded, then polyurethane over it. If you sand start out with some course 100 grit, then go to 220 grit, and finish it with some 00 steel wool to really make it smooth.

    • @MikesGarage96
      @MikesGarage96  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Natalie Woodley also whenever you're sanding wood, always sand with the direction that the grain of the wood runs in.

  • @zulfikranzulmos4066
    @zulfikranzulmos4066 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just use a glue.. Yes it will become loose but it's better than using screws..

  • @extremereclusefallows5779

    You could still countersink it and cover it with puddy.

  • @chrisbloomgren822
    @chrisbloomgren822 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Wtf? Screws? No! You plane some thin shavings off a straight grain wood. Take your shaving and glue them to the loose tennon so it's oversized. Once its dry sand the tenon back to a tight fit and glue it. You want screws on your wood chair go buy ikea

    your right,glue does not work

  • @ebray4134
    @ebray4134 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is 100% incorrect. With joint repair on chairs that have a live load, you never want to us metal in the wood, as you adjust and shift weight the metal being harder than wood will wear out. The correct way to fix the joint is with Hide glue. It is heat activate and is the original glue for chair spindles.

    I see... So you recommend using screws if the chair is old, and has already worked itself loose again after a couple of regluings... 🤔
    Shouldn't you have used a rubber mallet to knock the dowels in properly though?
