Maurice Delage's Quatre poèmes hindous is a set of four mélodies composed in 1912, while Delage was visiting India. The mélodies are named after the cities in which he composed them: Jaipur ("Jeypur"), Varanasi ("Bénarès"), Lahore, and Chennai ("Madras"). The work is scored for a small chamber ensemble of flute, piccolo, oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, bass clarinet, and string quartet, and it was premiered at the same concert as Ravel's Trois poèmes de Mallarmé and Stravinsky's Trois poésies de la lyrique japonaise. A typical performance lasts around 9 minutes.
The first and fourth mélodies use texts by Bhartṛhari, while the second features a poem by German poet Heine and the third an anonymous story about the birth of Buddha. All four use various techniques to evoke the sounds of India:
"Meticulous in everything he did, Delage went beyond the usual methods of Western exoticism in transcribing and studying closely recordings he collected in his travels, producing imitations of traditional Indian tuning and techniques of pizzicato-glissando, pizzicato harmonics, and close-mouthed singing, which presage the methods of the contemporary westerners who explore non-western musical traditions, above all, in the haunting second song in this group, 'Lahore.'"
