The point seems to be that an abused person can become abusive, and neither of them are good people. Noone in the cult is "good" either, they literally torture and falsely accuse a man. The ending of the show seems to make it clear that Joceyn is just as controlling as Tedros, and the execs are just as ruthless as Tedros. All of them are more concerned with signing the artists than their mental health. Jocelyn called Tedros back into her life after he had lost everything, giving her all the power in the relationships "now go and stand over there" - which is something abusers do IRL. I'm not saying the show is a masterpiece, but it seems to want to show that abusive people can become abusers, and tharetty shitty person. Notice how Jocelyn did nothing to try to help Rob. Leia and Chloe are probably the only good hearted people in the show, and Leia left, and Chloe is 17.
We need to sign a petition or something in order for HBO to release Amy Seimetz's version of this show. There's only been a couple of leaked photos of it online recently, and already it looks like it wouldve been WAY better than what we actually got.
I cant imagine the show being better in any meaningful way. Unless the entire thing was written completely different, not just directed, but the entire plot.

The show is obviously rejecting those simplistic victim/villain lenses here. Idk if it’s the fault of comic book movies or MeToo but theres a weird demand that every story have clear bad guys and good guys. This show gives you ambiguous characters because it’s rejecting that lens. Right from episode 1 it questions why an intimacy coordinator can override Jocelyns own decision to show her body. And in that same episode, the female record label head points out that today Jocelyn can’t be called a strong feminist before she’s first branded a victim. It’s saying THESE characters are not victims and all of them are messy.

That's what really gets me. I've see lots of other people in comment sections who don't see the problem with Jocelyn being the twist villain (but not really a twist because literally everyone predicted that lol) but it's a problem because the show was SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to demonstrate the exploitation of young women. So making a vulnerable young woman the villain is not only in poor taste, it just literally doesn't make sense for this specific show. 😭 And don't even let me get started on the false r*pe accusation plotline, like who read that script and greenlit that. But now whenever I feel discouraged about my writing, I'm going to remember that this show is a thing and I can't possibly write anything worse than this.

i think is crazy how from ALL people, the man picking up minors, staging scandals to ruin people's lives, TORTURES people for fun, beats women up, does drugs and has a cult devoted to himself turns out to be the victim of a young woman that was already struggling before she even met him. in theory i actually like the idea of portraying a situation where a victim can turn into an abuser and an abuser being a victim in a situation, cause this is something that can happen in real life too. but the execution was bad. for this topic the characters would have needed way more layers, especially the way jocelyn and tedros were written was way to onedimensional. it could have been so interesting to explore the grey areas between victim and abuser, but in favor of a shocking twist the situation was completely turned around and made it seem like previous abusive behaviors on tedros side didn't matter anymore or something like that.

Tbh I’m even more disappointed in this show, because I think the setup of a confident cult leader being outsmarted by a younger, smarter predator that manipulates him by presenting herself as his “perfect mark” is an extremely cool concept. It lends itself very well to exploring how manipulative men buy into their own hype and how women are presumed to be automatically sweet and vulnerable. As well as a level of shadenfreude that this horrible guy finally gets a taste of his own medicine. But this was NOT the show for that exploration. They didn’t even try to set it up, they just wanted to make porn.
they didn't even try to explain how the turn happened. it could have worked if they had developed the story throughout the episodes and not just change the plot in the finale. also, was it really necessary to have porn in EVERY episode? 😭 it was so uncomfortable.
The show really did have potential… you could see glimpses of where they could’ve really pulled us into the story. BUT after they fired the director, abel & sam they were left to their own devices unchecked & it turned into an episode of the red shoe dairies or something 🥴 I was really looking forward to this series & been a fan of the weeknd since he was an unknown. I'd like to think that the original story was exactly as you mentioned. Amy Seimetz was the show's original director and from what I've heard and seen and read, she had fleshed out and fully developed everyone to everything and was doing a great job. She set the concept up and executed it perfectly. And then Sam Levinson happened. Personally I'd like to believe that the reason why the cast keeps singing Levinson's praises and defending him is because any honest commentary will not end well for them. Everyone in the entertainment industry is connected one way or another; doing the morally-right thing could mean offending the big-shots and land them in unfavorable circumstances, like getting fired from set (like Barbie Ferrera and Amy Seimetz), getting undesirable projects in the future, or even outright accused for a crime they did not commit and getting cancelled (like what happened to Jocelyn’s ex Rob in the show finale). They have very little choice: be honest and risk ending their careers, or ignore their conscience and continue making ends meet (I know they earn a ton, but bills and taxes and living the good life cost a lot). A little far-fetched and perhaps controversial, but no one said Hollywood and the entertainment industry are all sunshine and rainbows all the time.
Most of the reactions I’ve seen have thought the hairbrush scene meant that Jocelyn had been lying about the abuse the whole time, but when I watched The Truth Doctor’s reaction I thought her interpretation of it made the most sense. She believes Jocelyn replaced the hairbrush at some point during the 6 week time jump, and it’s supposed to represent her letting go of her mother’s hold on her, or something like that. Edit to add: that’s not to say Tracy (The Truth Doctor) thinks the writing is good, nor do I. I just think her videos did an incredible job of making sense of the terrible writing, and I think her episode breakdowns are maybe the closest thing we’ll get to seeing what the original version of the show was intended to be.
honestly i think a lot of people are making gratuitous interpretations of this show that already has super shaky plot and writing, like i highly doubt sam levinson put this much thought into it lmao. its just bad/lazy writing. people r trying so hard to find meaning in something the creators barely glanced at haha

Haven’t finished watching your vid yet but I have to get this out: Although the idea that Jocelyn was the secret mastermind all along was absolutely disgusting, if they really wanted to convey that they had a perfect setup-with Jennie’s character. Jennie could have been a former talent that Jocelyn had stolen previously, recruiting her to be her backup dancer. Jennie could have been on the lookout for new talents after Jocelyn’s mental breakdown, and found out about Tedros and tell Jocelyn all about it, so she can use these people to get herself back up. Jocelyn, as thanks, let’s her have a taste of grandeur, let her be the lead in the music video, talk with her agent to convince her to maybe let Jennie sing in a few shows. And maybe Jocelyn would still pull the rug from underneath her and just be like “oh actually we can’t do that” and Jennie wouldn’t even care because she believes Jocelyn to be the amazing person that helps her and see her as, her /idol/ And then Jocelyn would say “It’s idoling time” and then idol all over the place.

I got the impression that Jocelyn was just trying to be edgy and was going along with the kinky stuff with Tedros. It was a bit of misdirection that she was on a destructive path but nothing that would destroy her status as "the idol". You can actually see her slowly moving into and increasing her influence over "the cult". Maybe she derived inspiration not from Tedros per se but the gifted minions that she wanted to open her show. There were scenes where you can see her assert her power and pushback but it wasn't written that well. Like when she called Tedros gay and blue balled him in that boutique or when you see her hanging out with the cult members debating their "yes" philosophy. It wasn't too hard to believe that when given a choice, Tedros's artists would go with Jocelyn who gave them a roof over their heads and had all the musical connections.

There's something I've found in an article that makes the show worst. Selena Gomez has said that this show has exploited her pain for entertainment. Jocelyn has Selena's mannerisms, like blowing kisses at the camera. Selena did a topless cover for her album 'Rivival' and it faced backlash, very reminisce to the photoshoot scene in the first episode where Jocelyn says "it's my body". Selena had a mental breakdown in 2017 and she had to cancel her 'Revivial' tour due to overworking. She had to go into a psychiatrist hospital. Jocelyn had a breakdown because of her mom's death and cancels her tour. The Weeknd needs to get over the breakup with Selena like omg. Why is he so obsessed with her???
What was dayanne (jennie character) doing the whole time? She's like a ghost like literally the most useless character in history, it did not make sense to have her there she was literally like "sit down and look pretty" but not so much because she appears like 50 seconds or less and that's it chao

The end was so funny. She's supposed to turn out to be manipulative and evil, and at the end Levinson and The Weekend thought "What could be the most horrible thing she could do and say to Tedros?" "Ah right, trap him into a commitment" So scary!😃
Throughout the entire show, there was never any hint that Jocelyn was the villain of the show, except when it was shoved inside in episode four, and the victimization of Tedros was absolutely disgusting, hes absolutely awful and yet they make it seem like hes the one being messed up. But whats to expect, god forbid The Weekend be presented in a bad light. Also, I found Dyannes record deal to be kind of pointless, as it leads very little impact, almost like it was just a b plot. And this show has a big problem with having characters develop between episodes.
In the first episode, first scene, u can see how Joselyn can so easily change her emotions. Like she can go from making a happy face to crying on command. I think that may be foreshadowing the rest of the series. But yea even that is like idk if im reaching cse this show gives no clear hints 💀💀💀 like its so confusing

This show feels like they had a word count they had to hit for a creative writing essay. And they didn't have a rough draft, they just raw dogged the whole thing and turned it in as it was and this is what we got.

The Idol would have been good if they focused on Joce's career BEFORE her mother died. We did not see an evolution of her music/personal feelings at that time. There was no evolution. It was a waste of money IMO. Had a great starting point but went in the worst directions. Makes me sad, I wish we saw the 'female perspective' they trashed.
Man it's one thing to be a pretty incompetent and vapid show. But to be so consistently icky with the portrayal (and trivialization of) SA, to double down on the sexualization of minors, and the overly sympathetic treatment or Tedros even after all we know - this show is one of the worst shows. Cinematography and music can only get you so far.
Another thing that's not really important in the grand scheme of things but I HATE her final dress. She's a popstar. She's worn all these outfits that allow her to move freely for the choreography and when she finally gets back on stage they put her in that gauze gown ... Like I get that the new music she's made during her break is more rnb or whatever tf but she still looks so stiff in that dress. No singer nowadays would wear something like that (unless you're Adele or someone similar), especially a woman, considering how much more effort they have to put in with choreography and everything else. E.g. Florence+the machine has long dresses but they're always flowy and allow her movement and she dances and jumps on stage. Jocelyn's dress makes her look like she's just gonna stand there and sing in one place.
I tend to believe the idea that actors are only as good as the script they're given. And the writing in this show was...not it. Personally, I'd like to see her in a well written project before I completely dismiss her acting skills.

Why would tedros beating her with a brush even work to inspire her music if her mom never abused her? If he’s gonna try to claim that she just got a new brush cause she got over the abuse and is giving tedros a new one to keep beating her with then why would he ask “didn’t you say this was the brush your mom beat you with?” And she answers “yes” “it looks brand new!” He says shocked. *creepy smile as in to say “haha gotcha”. This wouldn’t be so stupid if he hadn’t already seen the brush wtf. Even if I wanted to put up with all the misogyny and all the unnecessary sex, and the naked teenage heroin addicts the plot is just not nearly as smart as he thinks it is. The twist does not work because even tho it was kinda set up that she is a good actress who can just cry on command and fake her emotions she was still full on doing everything this man told her and only “snapped out of it” once she learned he was sleeping with Jennie. I might be wrong but... It feels like there's a full episode missing? Is it possible that there are five (instead of six, which is how many there were suppised to be), because they just got rid of one? Maybe that's why a bunch of stuff came out of nowhere.
I believe it's a bit weird how everyone is only criticising the Weeknd when a lot of the cast members were ok with the direction the series is going and voiced their support. :/ Of course the main criticism should go towards sam levinson and the weeknd, but the main actors and actresses are supported.

The point seems to be that an abused person can become abusive, and neither of them are good people. Noone in the cult is "good" either, they literally torture and falsely accuse a man.
The ending of the show seems to make it clear that Joceyn is just as controlling as Tedros, and the execs are just as ruthless as Tedros. All of them are more concerned with signing the artists than their mental health. Jocelyn called Tedros back into her life after he had lost everything, giving her all the power in the relationships "now go and stand over there" - which is something abusers do IRL.
I'm not saying the show is a masterpiece, but it seems to want to show that abusive people can become abusers, and tharetty shitty person. Notice how Jocelyn did nothing to try to help Rob.
Leia and Chloe are probably the only good hearted people in the show, and Leia left, and Chloe is 17.
We need to sign a petition or something in order for HBO to release Amy Seimetz's version of this show. There's only been a couple of leaked photos of it online recently, and already it looks like it wouldve been WAY better than what we actually got.

And in that same episode, the female record label head points out that today Jocelyn can’t be called a strong feminist before she’s first branded a victim. It’s saying THESE characters are not victims and all of them are messy.

Tbh I’m even more disappointed in this show, because I think the setup of a confident cult leader being outsmarted by a younger, smarter predator that manipulates him by presenting herself as his “perfect mark” is an extremely cool concept. It lends itself very well to exploring how manipulative men buy into their own hype and how women are presumed to be automatically sweet and vulnerable. As well as a level of shadenfreude that this horrible guy finally gets a taste of his own medicine. But this was NOT the show for that exploration. They didn’t even try to set it up, they just wanted to make porn.
They also turned tedros into a victim as if he hasn't been an abusive cult leader the whole time
they didn't even try to explain how the turn happened. it could have worked if they had developed the story throughout the episodes and not just change the plot in the finale. also, was it really necessary to have porn in EVERY episode? 😭 it was so uncomfortable.
The show really did have potential… you could see glimpses of where they could’ve really pulled us into the story. I'd like to think that the original story was exactly as you mentioned. Amy Seimetz was the show's original director and from what I've heard and seen and read, she had fleshed out and fully developed everyone to everything and was doing a great job. She set the concept up and executed it perfectly.
And then Sam Levinson happened.
Personally I'd like to believe that the reason why the cast keeps singing Levinson's praises and defending him is because any honest commentary will not end well for them. Everyone in the entertainment industry is connected one way or another; doing the morally-right thing could mean offending the big-shots and land them in unfavorable circumstances, like getting fired from set (like Barbie Ferrera and Amy Seimetz), getting undesirable projects in the future, or even outright accused for a crime they did not commit and getting cancelled (like what happened to Jocelyn’s ex Rob in the show finale). They have very little choice: be honest and risk ending their careers, or ignore their conscience and continue making ends meet (I know they earn a ton, but bills and taxes and living the good life cost a lot). A little far-fetched and perhaps controversial, but no one said Hollywood and the entertainment industry are all sunshine and rainbows all the time.
Most of the reactions I’ve seen have thought the hairbrush scene meant that Jocelyn had been lying about the abuse the whole time, but when I watched The Truth Doctor’s reaction I thought her interpretation of it made the most sense.
She believes Jocelyn replaced the hairbrush at some point during the 6 week time jump, and it’s supposed to represent her letting go of her mother’s hold on her, or something like that.
Edit to add: that’s not to say Tracy (The Truth Doctor) thinks the writing is good, nor do I. I just think her videos did an incredible job of making sense of the terrible writing, and I think her episode breakdowns are maybe the closest thing we’ll get to seeing what the original version of the show was intended to be.
I think that could be a plausible thing for what the show originally was but I don’t really think that fits with Tedros’s reaction (in this version)
honestly i think a lot of people are making gratuitous interpretations of this show that already has super shaky plot and writing, like i highly doubt sam levinson put this much thought into it lmao. its just bad/lazy writing. people r trying so hard to find meaning in something the creators barely glanced at haha

Haven’t finished watching your vid yet but I have to get this out: Although the idea that Jocelyn was the secret mastermind all along was absolutely disgusting, if they really wanted to convey that they had a perfect setup-with Jennie’s character. Jennie could have been a former talent that Jocelyn had stolen previously, recruiting her to be her backup dancer. Jennie could have been on the lookout for new talents after Jocelyn’s mental breakdown, and found out about Tedros and tell Jocelyn all about it, so she can use these people to get herself back up. Jocelyn, as thanks, let’s her have a taste of grandeur, let her be the lead in the music video, talk with her agent to convince her to maybe let Jennie sing in a few shows. And maybe Jocelyn would still pull the rug from underneath her and just be like “oh actually we can’t do that” and Jennie wouldn’t even care because she believes Jocelyn to be the amazing person that helps her and see her as, her /idol/
And then Jocelyn would say “It’s idoling time” and then idol all over the place.
Lol yes, each character had so much potential that got squandered but at least they idoled all over the place

I got the impression that Jocelyn was just trying to be edgy and was going along with the kinky stuff with Tedros. It was a bit of misdirection that she was on a destructive path but nothing that would destroy her status as "the idol".
You can actually see her slowly moving into and increasing her influence over "the cult". Maybe she derived inspiration not from Tedros per se but the gifted minions that she wanted to open her show.
There were scenes where you can see her assert her power and pushback but it wasn't written that well. Like when she called Tedros gay and blue balled him in that boutique or when you see her hanging out with the cult members debating their "yes" philosophy. It wasn't too hard to believe that when given a choice, Tedros's artists would go with Jocelyn who gave them a roof over their heads and had all the musical connections.

The end was so funny. She's supposed to turn out to be manipulative and evil, and at the end Levinson and The Weekend thought "What could be the most horrible thing she could do and say to Tedros?" "Ah right, trap him into a commitment" So scary!😃
Throughout the entire show, there was never any hint that Jocelyn was the villain of the show, except when it was shoved inside in episode four, and the victimization of Tedros was absolutely disgusting, hes absolutely awful and yet they make it seem like hes the one being messed up. But whats to expect, god forbid The Weekend be presented in a bad light. Also, I found Dyannes record deal to be kind of pointless, as it leads very little impact, almost like it was just a b plot. And this show has a big problem with having characters develop between episodes.

In the first episode, first scene, u can see how Joselyn can so easily change her emotions. Like she can go from making a happy face to crying on command. The Idol would have been good if they focused on Joce's career BEFORE her mother died. We did not see an evolution of her music/personal feelings at that time. There was no evolution. It was a waste of money IMO. Had a great starting point but went in the worst directions. Makes me sad, I wish we saw the 'female perspective' they trashed.
Man it's one thing to be a pretty incompetent and vapid show. But to be so consistently icky with the portrayal (and trivialization of) SA, to double down on the sexualization of minors, and the overly sympathetic treatment or Tedros even after all we know - this show is one of the worst shows. Cinematography and music can only get you so far.

Another thing that's not really important in the grand scheme of things but I HATE her final dress. She's a popstar. She's worn all these outfits that allow her to move freely for the choreography and when she finally gets back on stage they put her in that gauze gown ... Like I get that the new music she's made during her break is more rnb or whatever tf but she still looks so stiff in that dress. No singer nowadays would wear something like that (unless you're Adele or someone similar), especially a woman, considering how much more effort they have to put in with choreography and everything else. E.g. Florence+the machine has long dresses but they're always flowy and allow her movement and she dances and jumps on stage. Jocelyn's dress makes her look like she's just gonna stand there and sing in one place.

It was dumber than I could have possibly imagined 😂😂😂😂 he was acting like he had never noticed the brushs condition before as if he didn’t full on beat her with it and would have noticed if it was used or not. They’re acting like she was faking her sadness as if we didn’t see her crying by herself on multiple occasions. Was she acting for herself? Why would tedros beating her with a brush even work to inspire her music if her mom never abused her? If he’s gonna try to claim that she just got a new brush cause she got over the abuse and is giving tedros a new one to keep beating her with then why would he ask “didn’t you say this was the brush your mom beat you with?” And she answers “yes” “it looks brand new!” He says shocked. *creepy smile as in to say “haha gotcha”. This wouldn’t be so stupid if he hadn’t already seen the brush wtf. Even if I wanted to put up with all the misogyny and all the unnecessary sex, and the naked teenage heroin addicts the plot is just not nearly as smart as he thinks it is. The twist does not work because even tho it was kinda set up that she is a good actress who can just cry on command and fake her emotions she was still full on doing everything this man told her and only “snapped out of it” once she learned he was sleeping with Jennie. It was still his abuse what she needed to feel better?!?! After that she fucks her ex and it literally makes Tedros not be a cult leader anymore 😂😂😂😂😂😂 like what is the point? Are you gonna claim she just needed to be fucked well to get her music going?! That was literally it? She was a sociopath who had never been choked by her lover so she couldn’t write songs but then after he beat her and cheated on her she became so confident that she was able to steal his cult and become the most controversial music artist of the decades because she’s with a man who was convicted of torture and pimping prostitutes? I might be wrong but... It feels like there's a full episode missing? Is it possible that there are five (instead of six, which is how many there were suppised to be), because they just got rid of one? Maybe that's why a bunch of stuff came out of nowhere.
