BFRPG is hands down the best deal in RPGs available. For the price of one core rulebook of any other RPG, you can buy their entire catalog in print. Just an amazing project and community. BFRPG is an incredible game as well. I run OSE because I like the layout and is closer to B/X, but if I wasn't running OSE I'd be running BFRPG. However, I use a TON of BFRPG for my OSE game - Equipment Emporium, the field guides, adventure anthologies & other adventures, the combat options supplement for fighters, etc... BFRPG is a GOLD MINE!
Regarding experience: I deliberately made advancement slow because it's always easier to give a little more to the players than it is to give less. Several parts of the game are designed that way, actually.
All three of J.D. Neal's adventure books are definitely homages; they resemble the originals, but definitely go their own way rather than just copying the old stuff.
And thank you for the game mate. It's been a pleasure to read and play and so easy for me to DM with without having to dedicate loads of time understanding every little rule.
Video Idea: Talk about your 3 favorite BFRPG full length of adventures and your 3 favorite adventure anthology series adventures. I think a lot of people are sleeping on adventure anthologies, they are chock full of great scenarios for one shots. I'm running some OSE one shots this year and will for sure be running a couple of BFRPG adventure anthology adventures, I'm looking at Zombrarie estate and Beneath Brymassen but I'm curious which ones you think are good, particularly for 1st level characters.
Nice! Any Old-School TTRPG fans owe it to themselves to buy as many Basic Fantasy RPG books as they'd normally have to spend to buy a D&D 5E core book, even if they have no interest in switching. Buy Blackapple Brugh, the Adventure Anthology series, and Equipment Emporium for sure.
Id also recommend the JNx series, great open source clones of some classics, if finding the inspirations is difficult/expensive. Big nods to the classics, but they are very much their own.
Always found low level play the most enjoyable so I personally don't mind a slow advancement experience system. Just discovered your channel and subscribed for more. BFRPG is a great product line at an incredible value and it's supported by an awesome community. Cheers!
The artwork I find to be a big selling point. It's endearing, every artist that contributed has their own style. It's not overly sanitized and corporate like so many other games have become, which takes a lot of the charm out of the books from many other publishers.
Like I said, I'm personally a fan and having it come from passionate people all contributing towards a not for profit enterprise really sweetens the deal for me

I play in an OSE game and run BFRPG and they both have the feel I like for fantasy role playing games
❤ I love this kind of content even more so when it's about BFRPG.
Will have some more deep analysis on the way 👍
Thanks for this walkthrough. I’ve not explored Basic Fantasy anywhere near enough as a standalone. It was good to see it laid out this way.
Really glad you liked it mate, your videos on the gazetteers have made me very interested on using elements of Mystara in my games
Hey, thanks for the kind words! I appreciate it!

That's a great idea for a video thank you. Beneath brymassen is a thread in my current campaign in fact

I can't wait to run black apple brugh

@@spartaninvirginia gonna check these out thanks for the signpost
@@TheBasicBrit1989 had I waited about two more minutes, I would have seen that you brought them up. I'm having a great time running Chaotic Caves.
@@spartaninvirginia ahhh forgivey ignorance, the JD Neal books of course, the x at the end in your comment threw me off there
I started a solo campaign in BF and it's great. I could also pool from OSE and 1e for fleshing out scenarios. Totally compatible.
Great Guide!
More in depth looks to come
AAmazing video! When your phone vibrated it scared me so hard because I was wearing headphones at the time haha
😂 I must have missed that one in the edit, let me personally apologise to your ears for that one. Thank you for the kind words

Yep couldn't agree more, I honestly don't enjoy world shattering mega plots (though there's a time and a place) the low levels is where it's at
r/OSR brought me here!
Hopefully I can make you stick around

I love Basic Fantasy - so much quality gaming for free!
Quality is the correct terminology 👌
Basic Fantasy I got introduced to after get 5e in 2015. Great stuff and great price point too.
It's great, there's literally years of play for free if you don't mind digital
Love to see your map. Been thinking about a Morgansfort campaign myself and how to expand it to serve as a larger playground
Currently the map is a more stylised one for one of the original but I am trying to expand it into my world
