I literally searched for videos like this months ago, "BFRPG VS", and found a few, but mostly videos only somewhat related.. Call me paranoid but I'm really starting to think that youtube only shows you what it wants to show you. Glad youtube deemed me finally worthy of watching your video..
Love both systems so much! Better yet both authors did put their work out there, for love by the OSR and not for money! That attitude is so altruistic, it makes this hobby affordable for people with low budget. Thank you!
I am a simple man: I see Whitebox, I subscribe. And I agree with you. Both are awesome. Since I do not have players for either game, I use WB for solo play and the simplicity of d6 HD, single ST, and d6 damage for most weapons wins me over.
I agree. It's not that one is better than the other. It's whether you prefer an OD&D rule set, or a B/X style rule set with more meat to it. They're both great games at a great price. They're both so cheap, play 'em both.
I recently searched TH-cam for this very topic....and found zilch. I own both and greatly appreciate each of them. I was interested in other opinions. I love the size and art of WBFMAG. I love the character flavor/options of BFRPG. BFRPG more closely resembles the game I played in the early '80s, but the systems differ only slightly. Thanks for the video!
Another excellent video! Great to know that the BF modules are easily converted to White Box. That was my biggest question. I'm loving the WB system and can't wait to run a game myself. :)
The best thing about BF is the price point. Outside of that its a solid system but I find it to be a bit bland. WB has a lot more personality and charm in my humble opinion.
They work well together…..I like both and use both a lot . I will say the wilderness encounter tables are better in White Box. I also like the single saving throw aspect….like you said it works well with ranger’s tracking and woodcraft……as well as Bard characters having lore checks. Both games are affordable, easy to play OSR …and pretty compatible.
Could you give a quick conversion summary with the main things to look at and the things to do (AC values, HP dice type…) based on your experience.? Thanks!
Yeah I prefer White Box too, but the BF stuff is so cheap that I picked it up as well. Of course if you have Swords & Wizardry and its monster books then it all converts to White Box.
A plus of BF over WB is the treasure tables. I find that rules as written WB is very stingy with magic items. I end up using the tables in the three little brown books.
Have both books probably but would use Basic Fantasy more. I did get a lot of WB stuff when it was cheap on Drivethru. I do love WB. It a great resource even I do actually run the game
Nice video. Both games are great. Though I wish White Box had the type of active online support and community resources that Basic Fantasy has. By that I mean Basic Fantasy has a nice active forum and a really great active Facebook page full of friendly people who talk about their games. I don't believe White Box FMAG currently has anything like that.
IMHO White Box is a better core set, but BFRPG has better support and a better community surrounding it. That makes BFRPG the better game, because a game isn't just the core book, it's the total package. I say this heavily favoring the White Box ruleset, myself.

Best thing about retro clones is how easy it is to use existing material. Great vid as always bro. I loved this format.

Own both. Love both. Love them for different reasons.

Glad I could be of help! Thanks for watching!
Great video, Rob! ^^ We need more videos like this, great idea you had here!
Buy both! that is exactly what I have done.
Can’t wait to watch this after work!

Still working on getting the S&W Monstrosities book

As a thief lover, i appreciate the slight advantage that the d6 HD and the Thievery matrix provides at low level spell.
Great subject... thanks!

Let's get ready to rolllllll initiative!!!
Which would you consider the best option for the solo player?

I agree 100%

Best thing is, in the end, it's a full win for OSR players either way.
Isn't this really just a question of whether one prefers OD&D or AD&D?
You hurt me right in the center of my soul when you remove race/class limits. It's like being level drained.
Sorry. But I hate that rule. Always have.
It’s tough to beat BFRPG.
I agree. Its a great game!
White Box all the way.
