    I am in a Basic Fantasy group, led by the guy who wrote the module. You can get the PDFs for free, and you could probably buy printed copies of every book for the price of one WoTC book or close to it.

      That's cool, which module? And I couldn't agree more about the price. I've got every basic fantasy book on my shelves and love them all.

      Basic Fantasy is so affordable you feel like you are losing money if you don’t buy it. Great community.

    Fantastic picks! I would also add Delving Deeper - I love White Box FMAG, but Delving Deeper goes into a lot more detail on a lot more things. It's free online, and the Lulu version is about the same cost as White Box FMAG. They pair great together, too!

      Nice pick. I've read delving deeper in pdf but I don't have the paper copy. I'll pick one up so I can get a proper feel.

    I just got the basic fantasy and the 5.1 Srd and made a hybrid system. I have just slowly fused the mechanics i liked from both.

      That's pretty much the OSR spirit honestly, take what's there and mash it all up into your personal perfect system

    I'll be honest, if I knew these cheaper options existed a few years ago, I might not have ever tried D&D 5e. I certainly wouldn't have defaulted to it.
    Flash forward to now, I'm knee deep in the OSR and independent TTRPG scene, having a ball discovering new, much cheaper and more interesting games, and I have over $100 of special edition WotC-branded paperweights.

      You've just made me smile! Every journey starts with a first step. 5e was mine as well and for that I will always be thankful but the adventure really begins when you get off the beaten track.

    • @colbyboucher6391
      @colbyboucher6391 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the point I always wish I could get across. 5e is the most popular RPG because it's the most popular RPG. A lot of people who get into 5e as a "lifestyle brand" almost will pretty much argue, well, it's the most popular one so it must be "the best", right?

    • @fumbletable
      @fumbletable  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@colbyboucher6391 I think for lot people it's a case of "you don't know what you don't know". 5e is essentially the only game in town and there's a natural presumption that, as it's 5e it has to be better that the previous editions. Then once you mention low hit points, higher fatalities people close off thinking that comparing a worse version of the same game. But in reality they are comparing entirely different sports.

    Great videos, straight to the point and I think especially useful for people new to the hobby or willing to try their hand at OSR style of games. Keep on your great work!

    I come from the old school too, and i'm so impressed with the wide range of really good games being made these days, and so many of them have free pdf's that it's just mind-blowing. I only wish I had the time to play them all. I will recommend, at the risk of being reported as spam again, an alternate magic system I found a few months back that I love, called The Eight Elements. It's a tight freeform system with few rules, cool mechanics, and really good ideas. It's rough and in need of polish, but the pdf is like $3 US, and imo it's worth it if you're looking for something simpler than a standard spell-based system but still flexible and unique. And I have found absolutely nothing about it on yt, which is a shame imo.

    I switch to OSR thanks to Shadowdark. OSR for me was something new and fresh after 5e. Shadowdark is a great mix of best 5e mechanics and OSR style of play. Plus that torch/light and gear slot rules are so simple but so fun and impactfull!

    Two free games I recomend to anybody are Pocket Fantasy. Its a very rules lite game, yet has everything you need for an RPG. I do suggest getting the extra classes and magic item loot expansions, bringing the page count to about 10.
    Another is Mini-Six Bare Bones. This is classic Star Wars D6 rules (and includes a copycat not-Star Wars setting in the back). This game simplifies an already simple game, including a few really good fixes for some wonkier bits of old D6 rules (nerfs for Hero points, and for the Wild Die from D6 2nd edition). It even makes the combat sequence MUCH simpler, halving the amount of dice rolls and speeding up the game. The rules are intended to be setting agnostic, so you can do everything from fantasy to modern day to sci-fi.

      I wasn't aware of either of those games, thanks for sharing. Mini six bare bones looks really appealing to me. I'm going to download it and get a proper read through.

      Thank you! There should be a few more in this series. Hopefully it will help some people get playing without having to take out a mortgage.

    I would enjoy seeing a video talking about the D&D 5e Basic rules, as compared to the full 5e rules. D&D 5e Basic is a very nice game.

      I agree i had a lot of fun playing it and if i were to run 5e again it would certainly be using that. I'll add it to the list of vids to be made at some point.

    Thank you for suggesting and showcasing the D&D 5E Basic Set Book. I just got my copy in the mail, and it is something I've been looking for.
    From what I see, it is the perfect marriage of BECMI and D&D 5th Edition.
    It is also an "everything you need in one book."
    As much as I like "Old-School D&D," I always felt those types of systems fail to give the Players that little extra "something" that made them more special than the monsters they were fighting.
    5E kinda fixes this, but I'm not a fan of the bloat that comes with the standard system.
    This Basic Set Book cuts out the bloat while capturing the spirit of Dungeons and Dragons I am looking for.
    Thank you.

      I'm glad you found it. If I was playing 5e it would be what I was running. I really want this series to be getting as many people as possible running games so hope you enjoy the rest of the videos.

    Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells is a nice rulebook. Has a great quest table. The Shadowdark Quickstart is free. Hasn't been talked about in many years but Microlite20 is free and really simplified down the D&D rules. There's a wealth of free resources for that version of the game.

      Appreciate the feedback and agree 100%, the channel is still new and i'm still figuring things out. It's gonna be a little while before it can upgrade equipment but I think I've got audio improved a lot in the most recent videos.
