It's neat to listen to the different mixes. The gated room mic by itself sounds funny, but in the full mix, it adds just enough presence to the overall drum sound without sounding boomy. Well done.

Agreed! When I saw Shannon's video thats what I thought too but mixed in... adds a great presence

Wow! That 'mono room mic' sound is crazy! Instantly transports one back a few decades to the popular sound of the 80's. It really adds to getting a 'big' sound.
Also makes me consider why a lot of drummers were (futilely) hitting their drums so hard chasing a sound you couldn't really get without a lot of processing.

Yep! I've been watching the "older guys" and none of them hit that hard. Its like I heard Gadd and others say - let the mic's do the work. I'm not hitting too hard on this but w/ that room mic - BOOM!! :)

@@JeffWald Yes! Some of today's players with that RR&P (rape, rob & pillage) style really overwhelm the kit with heavy attack, & miss the nice tone available from a lighter touch.

Very cool Jeff!!! I saw Shannon't video too. He did a live stream workshop a couple years ago describing his mic setup and mic preamps etc. Looking forward to his part 2 video. You did a great job replicating what he had done. It sounds really good with that gated reverb just tucked in under your other mics. I agree though, it might not be the right thing for everything but it does work nicely. I have an AEA R88 (dual diaphragm ribbon) as my room mic which is capturing my room nicely. I must say it's not nearly the room you or Shannon have but it sort of works. Maybe it's time for a bigger house where I can have a big room too!!! lol... I'll have to try this gated reverb thing and see what it can do for my room. Thanks for sharing Jeff!!!

Hey Tom! Thanx man, I'm having fun w/ this. Still tweaking but it really adds another dimension to the sound. I'm looking foward to him putting out the next video - I'm really curious how he does alot of the computer side of things

@@JeffWald From other video's I've seen of Shannon's studio it looks pretty extensive with an SSL console and a bunch of outboard gear and tape machines etc. It looks like the next Toto tour starts February 1st so I hope he can do part 2 before they go out on tour again. He's getting a great drum sound and I would love to know more about how he's doing it!!!
