Love the comments. If I wanted a harder bootcamp I'd join the Marines. I wanted to join the Navy, so I joined the Navy.

I remember my days at Freedom Hall as if it were yesterday. The biggest ailment people in my divisision suffered from were from shin splints. My advise; try not to strike the ground with your heel, but more towards the midfoot or just behind the ball of the foot.

For everyone here who keeps on whining about how there needs to be more pain and hardship in navy boot camp, please stop. Most people that I know don't go into the navy to become the perfect soldier or to shoot people. The navy (and the air force) is mainly a supporting branch, which means that they are better at making sure that the guys who do want to be perfect soldiers can do so. I am joining the navy to do mental tasks, not physical ones. I need to be fit enough to do my job and perform as an average soldier, nothing more. It does not make sense to force the intel and linguist guys to stay as fit as a special forces unit in order to sit at a desk and be able to swim. Not everyone goes in to do shit that you see in action movies.
EDIT: I've been in for a a few years now. I still stand by what I said in general about the boot camp. I do think the Navy needs to focus more on PT. We still do it, but not as often as I would have it done. Most of the Navy seems to focus on getting shit done than making time for PT (not talking about SEALs).

This video is most likely softened up for PR purposes. I went through GLakes boot camp in winter73-74'. Miss happy hour in the drill hall! Hint:( it's not happy and it's not an hour) That will make you a puddle of sweat and in great shape. Do they still have that?
Remember that boot camp is to give you a foundation of discipline, training, physical conditioning, and mental toughness to meet the challenges of sea life when your assigned to a ship.

I guess it went company by company in boot camp. Both of my CCs in 87, were on the Fat Boy program. We didn’t get MASHED very much. Company upstairs did on what seemed like an hourly basis. PT wasn’t emphasized after you left boot camp before my time. Then the Stark got hit and a lot of the crew was so out of shape, that they reportedly had some guys fall out trying to keep her afloat ( per our CCs). PT supposedly got more attention in the fleet afterwards. In other words, they have tougher standards to maintain than we did.

Just got out last month, no bootcamp isn't really physically challenging if your in some sort of shape. The only difficult part about it was being apart from family with little contact. Also, after a while it just seems so repetitive. Same thing day in and day out. It was a great experience!

I went thru boot in 1971 in San Diego, CA. In 1971 we were put on a greyhound bus and arrived at San Diego about 2am. We then called for the boot bus which was an old clinker to pick us up. We arrived RTC/NTC at about 3:30am. We were put in a barracks given a rack and allowed to go to sleep. At 5am the trash can lids were clanging to get up. They took a muster than we went to the chow hall and got some chow. Then they day started with getting our clothing allowance and being told what will happen for the next 12 weeks. Yes, twelve weeks which we were the last battalion to get twelve weeks. The barber did not take a little off of the top instead it all came off. A real buzz but it did grow back. PT as they call it included the grinder. We did do PT every morning. White T shirts and dungarees. We did spend a week in the galley doing food service. The 6 week you crossed the bridge which pretty well meant you were half way thru. Plenty of class room time and knot tying classes. No fancy racks stacked two high. Lockers that stood on the deck with them properly folded clothes you had learned how to do. Also you learned the general orders so you could recite them in the gas chamber. Also you went out to the rifle range to see if you could shoot. What fun we had in 1971. Graduation with the best company in the battalion. We then had leave then A school and assignment to a ship and off to Vietnam.

Fyi I'm not in a military but thinking about joining next year... But what I don't get is why other people saying in the comments like its weak... I know it's not marine or army training but aren't in bootcamp teaches about "Team work"? Aren't we all in the same country/states that wanted to serve? My reason why I want to join is just to help people anywhere in the world I don't mind getting paid (unfortunately we need money for food) but come on marines and other branches THINK!
    "Like" my msg for changes.

Navy boot camp isn't overly physical. Unless your going to be a SEAL you don't need to be in elite physical condition. Army and Marines usually are on their feet and out in the field so their boot camps should be more challenging and you get more training afterwards. Personally for me I came out of boot a little deconditioned from when I went in. But I was running 5 miles in 30 and sub-30 minutes. I was already doing 125 push ups in 2 minutes and about 130 sit ups in 2 minutes. So boot camp training wasn't as daunting for me as for some of my other shipmates who weren't in the physical condition I was in. But it's about team work and trusting your shipmates to get y'all through the endeavors of serving in the military. Good luck and I say" go for it" !!!!

Navy Boot Camp has changed a lot since I went through it in 1984. Not saying it was like Marine Boot Camp, but it was was much more "mental" than this. Much more yelling and Company Commanders getting up in peoples faces. There were no T-Shirts, Ball-Caps and sweat pants. Unless you were doing PT, you had to be "Squared-Away" meaning, your uniform had to be right! Many more people joined the Navy in those days, so they were more willing to "weed-out" the weaker recruits.
People will compare Navy Boot-Camp to Marine Boot-Camp and Army Basic-Training. But they are worlds apart. People will say that The Navy is so much easier than the other two but it doesn't need to as strenuous as the other two. Most of the Marines and Soldiers that say that, wouldn't make through the first day of Navy SEAL-BUD/S training. Most aren't joining the Navy to be an elite commando. They will be in positions where they are operating equipment costing in the millions of dollars. You don't need to get screamed at for 8-weeks to operate a nuclear-reactor plant on a 5 Billion Dollar Ballistic Missile Submarine. Aren't many "Grunt's" that could pull that one off.

I am so glad to see this. Back in the Eighties, when I went through, there was not as much emphasis on PT. I lost weight when I went in, but it was probably due to diet and marching from barracks to school more than anything. Both CCs were on the “Fat Boy” program and we didn’t do that much PT. Though I can assure you, the Company upstairs from us got MASHED on a daily basis. Maybe hourly.

As a fairly recent Graduate of navy boot camp, I feel it necessary to point out that the PT is set to improve the lowest common denominator. I though that the PT was laughably easy. I at 25, Ive spent the past few yeas as LEO/SWAT/ for my department and came into boot with a pretty solid Idea of what I could do.
The challenge came when I hit A-school. At A -school, it was quickly determined who was in shape, who wanted to be in-shape and who the "shitbag sailors" and treated accordingly.

Joe Gonzalez Bootcamp in 1993, orlando florida. Hot, humid and hellish. Not like Marines of course but we sure got yelled and screamed at. Pushed around and made to generally feel like crap. PT was hell. we usually did a ten count march all the way to the galley. ten steps, then a ten count bodybuilder, then ten steps then ten count bodybuilder. Our barracks was called the sweat room because by the time our CC was done PTing us, it was wet inside.

I went to Navy bootcamp in 2005 things were different then. We had several prior service army and Marine Corps in my division and it was just as hard for them as it was anyone else. When we pissed off our RDCs which seemed to happen every day they would do a little thing called "making it rain". They would crank the heat all the way up, and make us do calisthenics until there was a cloud in the room, and then we would open up all the windows and the cold air would literally make it rain sweat.

Once you reach a certain point (usually after capping ceremony) its all worth it. You see a tad bit more respect from those around you, and then at A school, everything 250% different for the better. Exactly there are things in the Navy marines Couldnt and handle, one being on a ship all day dealing with choppy waters, possible attacks from the evils at sea like pirates and such, nit to mention possible enemy subs that one cant see on the surface nit to mention theres no where to hide in case of an attack from an enemy, you are a sitting Duck there is no fox hole or even building one can hide behind , lets see they also train in firefighting how to safely work machinery, sailors have been known to get their heads chopped off dealing with the anchor and so much more being on ship comes woth its own set if dangers just like any other branch one is not bettet then the other and while marines want to shoort down Thr Navy, they tend to forget they are the Navy they just decided long ago to branch out on their own they are the foot Soldiers of thre navy, air force is thr air of the Navy actually the only teo branches that are nit part of the Navy is the army and coast guard..At the end of the day each branch is needed one branch is incapable of fighting a war on their own...So it would do good if the egos stay at thr door and RELIZE each branch needs each other..
Heres the true order of branches
      NAVY, ARMY, AIRFORCE, MARINES,COAST GUARD

It really depends on what you want to do. Not everyone in the air force becomes a pilot. In fact many get "desk" jobs. The physical requirements for air force tend to be not as difficult as the other branches. Not only that there are quite a variety of things you can do in the navy. If you want more of a challenge go navy. Hooyah

If you're overweight, you won't be for long. Your RDC will beat you nightly to make sure that you're in shape for your final PFA. I HIGHLY suggest trying to build up some stamina before shipping out. You'll build up stamina as you go and will do a 3 mile run around the base before you graduate. Also, do as many push ups and sit ups as possible because you'll have to do roughly 50 each to pass your final PFA.

I went thru boot camp when the Korean War started in 1950. They opened up a boot camp Newport , Rhode Island. Winter in Rhode Island was horrible, the camp was near the Atlantic Ocean, we marched in the cold, excercised in the cold and after 11 weeks were sent to ships in the Atlantic Fleet. I was sent to the USS Midway, at that time was the largest of three aircraft carriers. My job was as a "HOOK RUNNER" I was sent out to slap the hooks which the propeller driven planes, (No Jets UNTIL Late 1951). THAT MEANT WHEN ANY PLANE LANDED ON THE SHIP US HOOK RUNNERS HAD TO RUN OUT EACH TIME AND REPLACE THE TAIL HOOKS UNDER THE PLANES TAIL AND BY THE TIME WE GOT BACK TO OUR STATIONS ANOTHER PLANE LANDED. I DID THAT FOR A YEAR . NOW I WEAR "HEARING AIDS. THE NAVY GAVE US NO EAR PROTECTION. THAT PROTECTION IS NOW STANDARD FOR ALL DECK JOBS ON A CARRIER. FORTUNATELY I WAS TRANSFERRED OFF THAT SHIP AND WENT TO SCHOOL.
I became a Photographer and finally had my own photo lab on a repair ship. I got out in 1954, a year after the Korean War ended.

It was fun. We did nearly everything you see in this video and more. And yes, it felt like you were going to die at times. But I never wimped out. I can't wait to be in the Navy, I know it'll be a challenge

Very different then it was in 1976. We didn't get 'cool' shorts, t-shirts and sneakers. We did PT in long pants and 'boonies'. And many, many (many) cycles in front of our racks and lockers in the barracks (cycles = holding your arms out an front of you while running in place as fast as you can, than dropping down for push ups). Going out to the 'grinder' at 0600 in the Orlando summer to run was always a fun way to begin the day...
