    TVNZ does not come out of this in any way squeaky clean. It is most certainly time for an enquiry into TVNZ’s supposed neutrality as a broadcaster. And if, as I suspect, they are found to be wanting in that respect there should be a complete investigation as to their financial irresponsibility via a loss of advertising revenue caused by TVNZ content. Financial responsibility being required under the TVNZ Act.

    I sincerely hope there is no conflict or civil war however it appears there are elements on the left that are willing to start it. That would certainly be a sad day for New Zealanders and I urge everyone to lawfully push back with logic against this occurring. As a Maori I certainly believe this definition should take place as this issue that certain elites are pushing is starting to divide the country. We are all humans and should be equal under law with no favor based on race.

      @myresponsesarelimited7895 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      It in and of itself is set in stone, but there's hammers and chisels for that, what they're trying to do is rewrite the interpretation they already wrote when they initially paved the way for this mess in the 70s and 80s. They're in effect trying to amend ammendments previously made a few decades ago under the guise it's old, and antiquated, and we need to be progressive- ain't that a trip- the treaty is indeed old- but the ammendments are relatively new all be they worthless in the ICJ.
      ...btw you can make new treaties, but you can't make amendments to a current one. It's a peace accord not a constitution.

      2:28 The problem with your statement is that he’s NOT seeking to re-write the treaty because he cant what he’s doing is attempting to re-write the Treaty Principles which are the ideas, phrases and words that are thought to capture the broad sentiments, intentions and goals of the Treaty to allow them to be incorporated into law and applied in practice. In a nutshell, the Treaty Principles are the Treaty’s representative in law.
      They are the Treatys representative in law as there are 2.documents (the Treaty of Waitangi and Te Tiriti o Waitangi). The Government favours the Treaty as it gives them authority, while Te Tiriti says differently. This is why principles were enacted to breathe life to the favored document, The Treaty of Waitangi.
      They were developed over 60 years by academics (particularly New Zealand historians), lawyers, judges and other experts employed by the courts or Waitangi Tribunal, alongside Iwi officials and Iwi governing entities, government officials as well as politicians.
      The principles can be changed, however what Seymour proposes doesn’t even resonate with the spirit let alone the text of the Treaty or Te Tiriti. As most Treaty experts agree that while the 2 treaty documents are somewhat different they both agree that Maori retain right to govern over themselves and their lands. Further to this Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Maori version) is the version recognised in international law, because it’s the version signed by the Chiefs and is one of the reasons why 2:28 was not successful.

    Stands to reason why Maori don't want this going through, they'll lose their "special" status because when everybody's special nobody's special. That will be in the spoken rule for sure but over time I think it will be the unwritten as well. They may as well put all their grievances on a shelf because they will become downgraded to irrelevance. The treaty has always been a tough order because on the one hand the government has, will and can never fulfill their obligations and on the other hand Maori have to move on, cut their loses and give up their special status. This bill will force the issue but it's not going to be without a fight.

      What special status? When my mother and her relatives were growing up, they were beaten or tortured for speaking te reo.. They have never received an apology from the Crown or compensation for the abuse. The Maori "special status" barred them from entering entertainment areas in the 1950s, securing housing and or jobs. My uncle an ex-war veteran was declined 28 rental properties because of his "special" status. My uncles who fought in WW2 returned from war and got nothing for their service, but their pakeha counterparts got housing, education and jobs. My white looking mother had to listen to her pakeha colleagues' rants about "dirty Maori" and other disgusting racist comment. My boss could not sit next to her white mother at the movie theatre cause Maori sat elsewhere. This is how pakeha justice works for Maori when the land is stolen and sold off to someone else by the thief, they have to make a claim, and wait over 100 years before the claim is heard so they can be compensated or receive their land back. However, according to Pakeha justice for non Maori when property is stolen the thief is prosecuted and the victim gets compensation, or their property returned without having to file any claims. Who has the "special" status? One law for all what a load of crap.

      Because article 1 of the Māori text doesn't say sovereignty it says kāwanatanga (governance). And then in article 2 it says Māori will retain tino rangatiratanga (absolute authority).

    • @tim2muntu954
      @tim2muntu954 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the Crown walks away from Article 1 of the Treaty with the idea they have "absolutely and without reservation all the rights and powers of Sovereignty", while the Maori Confederation walks away with the idea of "kāwanatanga (governance)"; and in article 2 the Crown understands the Maori Confederation retains "full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their Lands and Estates Forests Fisheries and other properties which they may collectively or individually possess", while the Maori Confederation believes they retain " tino rangatiratanga (absolute authority)"?

    • @BaileyMasters-ud8qx
      @BaileyMasters-ud8qx 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's an excellent summation. If you put yourself in the shoes of Māori leaders, it seems very unlikely that they would have signed away their ability to rule over their lands and people to a foreign power. No-one would do that. It makes a lot more sense that they were allowing the english to establish a government to help control the increasing number of European settlers.

    • @BaileyMasters-ud8qx
      @BaileyMasters-ud8qx 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you read the treaty like this the following few decades make sense. Until the NZ Wars, English law had very little power beyond the boundaries of European settlements.

We have been suffering accelarating mediocrity for decades lead by labour governments but not sufficiently reversed by national in this time. If we continue as 2 more peoples it is time nonmaori charged for free gifts given by non maori collectively to maori. This is virtually trillions of technological gifts not available to maori until colonisation and the subsequent opening to the outside world. Maori didn't even have the wheel!

    Nobody seems to be looking at the debate in 1840 amongst Maori chiefs recorded by eyewitness Colenso. The chiefs obviously knew they were handing the right to govern to the governor, and there was much debate baout this. The governor would be "High, high, high" and the chiefs "Low, low, low". "Taonga", back in 1840 meant simply "ordinary posessions", for ALL New Zealanders.

    • @jameskjx
      @jameskjx 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah nah. reading Colenso is good - taking it out of context is not. There was debate about the relationship of chiefs and governor. Māori signed to a) ensure their continued rule over NZ, b) get their land back and c) cos missionaries told them to sign.

    • @robkyles5547
      @robkyles5547 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jameskjx You said: "There was debate about the relationship of chiefs and governor" Yes, that's what I said. Colenso gives context.
      You said: "Māori signed to a) ensure their continued rule over NZ, b) get their land back and c) cos missionaries told them to sign." You give no explanation where you get this idea. I believe you are correct, however, that the missionaries persuaded the chiefs to sign.
      I could just as easily say: Maori Chiefs signed to: a) escape from a vicious cycle of UTU between tribes, b) get British protection from the French, c) gain British citizenship and taonga such as axes, nails, clothes and, sadly, muskets.
      It would be incomprehensible that the Governor would offer the chiefs of a small island full citizenship and protection, yet allow those same chiefs to be completely outside British rule of law. The treaty does not describe a partnership, this is just people making stuff up.
