John i have a tip for power lines that really works especially with top water baits. Just let your bait fall to the water and use a second rod to thow a lure and hook your bait, then freespool the original line and reel both baits back. Cut the original lure and now your just reeling the line over power line without your 10$ bait. Re-tie and keep fishing. Talking from experience here.

I had a guy in a 42 Freeman with a HUK logo wrap pull up to me while I was surf fishing to throw on a school of pogies. I asked if he really needed to do that. He said, "we're getting bait for a king mackerel tournament". Next day, same boat anchored within casting distance of Ocean Isle Pier. Hey John, I grew up along the Jersey shore Atlantic Highlands, spent a lot of days fishing with my Dad who had a boat into his late 80’s . Wow SO RUDE. I had something similar happen to me last year on shore at the cape cod canal. I was the only one around in the early morning. Caught a few fish in a blitz right at the shore and an Asian family of 4 saw that, came down and set up RIGHT next to me upstream EXACTLY where I was casting into a blitz ...there was MILES of fishable water up and down from me with no one around. I was not able to keep my cool and yelled at them to go down further and asked why they went exactly in front of me. They didnt seem to (want) speak english, but my hand gesture of going further down was obvious. Eventually, after they caught nothing for 30 mins only the dad stayed and the rest went further down. I kept casting into my spot and basically knew I would tangle up with him eventually, which we did. He still wouldnt leave....so frustrating. Really ruined a nice fishing morning and the experience.
IMO I think the mullet jump to clear their filters periodically. A similar technique is used by the bunker up here in NE and it looks like the bunker lie on their side (you see the shine in the dark schools) as they swim in the school. In both cases the fish seem to always land on their side forcing water in reverse in their filter plates.
Great video as always John. I have nothing against bait per se, but it’s truly amazing how many guys fish for snook with nothing BUT bait, even when lures are working so well. However, what I’ve been told several times (after living on the SE coast for 18 months) is that the big - REALLY big - snook will almost always fall for bait. Not saying monsters aren’t taken on lures but I’ve been told bait has an edge if you’re truly going for only big slobs.

John, etiquette has changed and with the world uneasy these last few years it seems even more on edge. Thought we got kayaks to avoid this right? Hey, seems the stripe bite may be pretty good this year with decent hold overs. Hope you get onto some good stuff back up north.
They say the mullet jump because they get little parasites on their gills and they're trying to clear them off. If you look closely they almost always land on their sides and open their gill plate and turn shortly before impact.
There seems to be more and more of that on the water, specifically on saltwater. Boat guys view us kayak guys as newbs. The best feeling in the world though is when you're hammering fish in the kayak and the boat guys are struggling and you can hear them mumbling profanities at you.
I’ve been fishing in the St Augustine area for five years now, and the general rudeness has always been there on the weekends, but weekdays were fairly sane. When COVID started and the beaches, work, schools and pretty much everything but boat ramps were closed, it got a lot worse. On a Tuesday afternoon the local launch looked like the Fourth of July. At one point, there were reports in the paper that fishing boats were sold out at the local stores - and a lot of that additional traffic hasn’t really abated. These people have only a hazy idea how to handle or launch their boats, much less how to behave on the water. They don’t know the rules or how to handle fish, either, and the fishing has certainly suffered. Hopefully the novelty will wear off and these people will go back to whatever they were doing before. It will probably take the fishing a couple years to recover.

The crazy thing is when I call them out for their behavior they yell back "you don't own the water" like 90% of the time. The irony in that is almost impressive.
Wow, you already know that they must be new to do something like that, a seasoned boater would know better...I guess that's why I go out early and return early, to try and avoid them...good luck with them and stay safe always.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing my boat is "well worn" so to speak and this will be my 2nd season with it and I know not to do that...some people get a boat and don't have the basic skills to navigate safely on the water, but, they have a boat, if that makes sense.

I live in your area and feel your pain. The great thing about the area is there is A LOT of water and you don’t need to step on anyone else for any reason. Even if he was getting bait, there are hundreds of spots for bait. Clearly clueless. No need to disrupt skinny water kayakers or skiffs. SWFL has a ton of a**holes who think they are tough guys, with no sense of decorum or etiquette. A sign of our recent times in FL.
John your retrieve seems not to much different than your surf cast retrieve cadence. Initially i thought it was gear, lure presentation, or bait. but your retrieve is the consistent muscle memory fish catching ability. Great video! Ill keep learning from you jedi
No one actually knows why mullet jump. Researchers have a bunch of theories, most of which have been mentioned here (parasite removal, oxygenation in low DO water, predator avoidance, or spawning related), but there’s no real consensus on a reason. I’ve had similar experiences with boaters blowing up a spot in the Tampa area. I don’t know if it’s FL boaters who don’t understand the etiquette or if it’s a broader issue, but whew boy is it frustrating. Your patience amazes me though!
My dad always said, "You can't teach common sense." It's amazing how little respect people have for others. It's all about me,me,me... it certainly seems that I personally have had more and more trips either on the boat or in the surf ruined by assholes who need to fish on top of you. It aggravates my Dad so much that he refuses to fish on weekends.. Retirement has its perks. There is no common courtesy anymore.. I just don't understand why.
According to my research mullet jump for two reasons. One being predator avoidance. When they do this usually it will be a group of them jumping together. The second reason would be to “Swallow” air from the surface in order to survive longer in water that has lower amounts of dissolved oxygen. In this case they don’t seem to jump as a group but periodically. Pretty interesting actually, not a lot of fish have the ability to survive water that is warm because lack of oxygen. The humble mullet just happens to be one of those fish.
I know carp, being bottom feeders, will jump out of the water to clear their gills of moss and muck they pick up from the bottom. The snook are in pretty shallow water with lots of moss on the bottom and floating around. So perhaps its for similar reasons
john, I've been told that mullet jump to get their food down. Not sure how accurate that is. I've read it's due to O2 levels and how jumping aerates the water. They do seem to jump more in backwater areas where you'd expect a lower O2 level. If you ever catch a few finger mullet and put them in a container, they jump all the time. Castnetting them is a circus. The rudeness isn't new depending on when you go out. I used to fish weekdays even nights to avoid the potlickers. Many of these rude folks don't fish a lot, they just take a friend or relative out and look for fishermen, not fish. I won't even go down a bank like that if someone is within 300 yards of it.
I live on the indian river in southeast Fl and I cant tell you the number of times I've been on fish and someone will roll right up on me and start throwing a cast net. Even the commercial guys. It's just like trying to deal with bad drivers on the road, its maddening!!!
does that island with the power lines have a name? or general area? id like to try there next march when i come down.i usually fish pine island sound but im not familiar with that spot.thanks
It has gotten absolutely ridiculous lately. I was trolling in an area all by myself for at least an hour catching crappie two boats rolled up, and one rudely said this is a big lake! Like I took his spot, yeah, I told his ass off!
As far as why Mullet jump.. short answer is there are 100 theories for it. Could be to shake parasites, to trap air or even share their location to other fish.
As always thanks for the fishing lessons. I'm not sure if people are more disrespectful or ignorant. Certainly the sheer numbers of boater/fisherman has increased and I would say this is part of it along with many new boaters every year. I think you handled their stupidity as well as you can.
John. Unfortunately it is a really common occurrence at that spot. It is one of the most popular spots for netting white bait before heading out for the bait soakers. That said, they absolutely knew common courtesy would have been to stay away but they didn’t give a damn. I’ve been wade fishing there and had boats run right in front of me and start fishing my line no more than 20 feet in front of me.
It's like the idiots that crowd you on the beach. I gave up bait fishing and now strictly wade fish artificials and have even gone as far to fish the midnight to wee hours Mon-Thurs..
I have friends with boats tell me they have more rights over kayakers to fish since there price of entry is so much higher. Like …. Wtf … how does that even make sense in there heads. They hate my kayak.
Man you ain’t lying about how rude boaters are getting. My in-laws came down for 10days and I took pops to the Ft Myers Beach pier on Sunday to fish. Idiot guy on a sailing catamaran rolls right next to the damn pier! What the heck is wrong with people?
Years ago, a guy went right in front of me on the beach, yelling "you got your limit, now you gotta go!" Then he backed off. Noticed my really long bait knife? They don't like seeing you catch when they can't.

The crazy thing is when I call them out for their behavior they yell back "you don't own the water" like 90% of the time. The irony in that is almost impressive.
He’s probably the same guy that zoomed by you at 50 Knots a few videos ago. Lol
Wow, you already know that they must be new to do something like that, a seasoned boater would know better...I guess that's why I go out early and return early, to try and avoid them...good luck with them and stay safe always.
I don't know how new - pretty nice well-worn boat from what I could see.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing my boat is "well worn" so to speak and this will be my 2nd season with it and I know not to do that...some people get a boat and don't have the basic skills to navigate safely on the water, but, they have a boat, if that makes sense.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing and you just can't throw a large cast net that well without some practice, maybe get the boat numbers in frame and share the video with some fish and wildlife folks?
I live in your area and feel your pain. The great thing about the area is there is A LOT of water and you don’t need to step on anyone else for any reason. Even if he was getting bait, there are hundreds of spots for bait. Clearly clueless. No need to disrupt skinny water kayakers or skiffs. SWFL has a ton of a**holes who think they are tough guys, with no sense of decorum or etiquette. A sign of our recent times in FL.
I appreciate your perspective!
John your retrieve seems not to much different than your surf cast retrieve cadence. Initially i thought it was gear, lure presentation, or bait. but your retrieve is the consistent muscle memory fish catching ability. Great video! Ill keep learning from you jedi
Next kayak....torpedo launcher.
Daddy bought the boat so he wouldn’t have to go …. And show any manners…. Good video, NJ in the house!
FLA is open carry....NJ is No Carry...thats why punks in NJ dare do stupid things like that....
Makes no sense, Florida’s carry and no one shot?….
Always a joy when “boat guy” shows up to run the fish over. I always keep a giant tin with no hook on it….
"Common cents" must be the most costly commodity cause so few have it these days.
GREAT TO SEE most here have pockets full!!
They don’t make a vaccine that prevents STUPIDITY
According to my research mullet jump for two reasons. One being predator avoidance. When they do this usually it will be a group of them jumping together. The second reason would be to “Swallow” air from the surface in order to survive longer in water that has lower amounts of dissolved oxygen. In this case they don’t seem to jump as a group but periodically. Pretty interesting actually, not a lot of fish have the ability to survive water that is warm because lack of oxygen. The humble mullet just happens to be one of those fish.
Thanks for that!
Not to worry soon you will be back on Long Island we're every one is friendly....Fish on
I know carp, being bottom feeders, will jump out of the water to clear their gills of moss and muck they pick up from the bottom. The snook are in pretty shallow water with lots of moss on the bottom and floating around. So perhaps its for similar reasons
You get lots of that on Long Island Sound, you'd think you'd be safe from that off Pine Island John.
john, I've been told that mullet jump to get their food down.
There hasn’t been line courtesy at a bowling alley for 20 years!!! I don’t expect any more on the water!
I live on the indian river in southeast Fl and I cant tell you the number of times I've been on fish and someone will roll right up on me and start throwing a cast net. Even the commercial guys. It's just like trying to deal with bad drivers on the road, its maddening!!!
Aside from reasons mentioned already apparently one theory is they are “breaking open their egg sacs” before spawning. The jumping facilitates this.
Always told my kids that mullet jump because they don’t like to fart under water. ;)
does that island with the power lines have a name? or general area? id like to try there next march when i come down.i usually fish pine island sound but im not familiar with that spot.thanks
Behavior like this makes no sense whatsoever. The selfishness exhibited in this country these days is pathetic. Where did decency go?
Gone. People aren't decent anymore. Our society on a whole has certainly degraded.
It has gotten absolutely ridiculous lately. I was trolling in an area all by myself for at least an hour catching crappie two boats rolled up, and one rudely said this is a big lake! Like I took his spot, yeah, I told his ass off!
If that happened here in Australia it’d be “ON LIKE DONKEY KONG”
Guaranteed they’d never do it again.
Hey John, great video. When are you gonna be back on the Island!
Opening day of fluke, may 4.
Welcome to Florida John that is all over
How are you rigging the weight hook? Barrel swivel 30 lb flouro hook?
Best color?
Barrel swivel, 40# fluoro. I now use a 50# Tactical Angler's clip to the plug.
These days it's probably ignorance rather than malice, John, I hope.
Unbelievable John !!!
John you are right, that boat is full of pieces of crap! Totally disrespectful!
I placed my order im ready to see how they work
That was a "welcome to the neighborhood" moment if I ever saw one 🙂
The rudeness is everywhere not just on the water. It's really getting bad. These days people seem to only care about themselves.
Lol looks like the mullet run is on from the background
They do that all of the time I'm down here. They're very plentiful.
John, any updated info on a spinning jig and bounce release?
Early summer is all I know.
Wow! That was not cool! I really couldn’t tell you what’s wrong with people these days.
@john skinner the weight of the reel doesn’t hurt your wrist?
It's like the idiots that crowd you on the beach. I gave up bait fishing and now strictly wade fish artificials and have even gone as far to fish the midnight to wee hours Mon-Thurs..
Getting crazy on the water, I can take my boat out here in Tx 20 miles out at 6:30am and get some guy plonk 100 yards from me!
I have friends with boats tell me they have more rights over kayakers to fish since there price of entry is so much higher. Like …. Wtf … how does that even make sense in there heads. They hate my kayak.
The COVID boater respects no boundary.
Your to nice John, I would of put a 5 oz sinker on and taught them a lesson.
Filter feeder right? Bunker do the same thing jump when nothing is on them. I think it's to feel wind direction so they know which way to face to feed
Mullet jumping has to do with oxygen content in the water
Man you ain’t lying about how rude boaters are getting. My in-laws came down for 10days and I took pops to the Ft Myers Beach pier on Sunday to fish. Idiot guy on a sailing catamaran rolls right next to the damn pier! What the heck is wrong with people?
That dude was serious AH, don't know how you managed to not have a screaming match with him yourself.
Sadly I'm all too familiar with those types from back when I fished for landlocked stripers. I guess they moved up and spreader to Florida.
Years ago, a guy went right in front of me on the beach, yelling "you got your limit, now you gotta go!" Then he backed off. Noticed my really long bait knife? They don't like seeing you catch when they can't.
If someone gets too close to me, they're gonna know what a 2oz bank sinker tastes like.
Chivalry is apparently dead on the water for some people, John.
did you see that fish jump right after the first cast?
I find that new boaters have more money than sense.
