Comprehensive Column Speaker Comparison. JBL vs BOSE vs SubZero

  • 13.34 Sound test.
I've literally used and tested every column speaker that is available on today's market. These are my favourite three. I picked these 3 as they all offer something different and are significantly better when compared to others of the same price bracket. I have used them all for recorded background music, bands in live settings, concert halls, voice and guitar, solo piano, theatres etc... Literally everything that someone might like to ask about.

Thanks very much for this exceptionally thorough and useful review revolving around real-world aspects! Wish you had included a song with some normal vocals in it so we could judge how natural each system sounds. My impression of the L1 has always been like yours - weird bass, piercing treble, and overly thin mids. The JBL also does something strange to the mids (I think the JBL signature sound more or less always scoops out certain mids), making it sound less authentic for singer/songwriter duos and the like. Sort of hollow. The SubZero is new to me, so would have loved to hear it with vocals. But now as bit of research will follow...

Thanks for taking the time to test the speakers.
For your next video can you try a more elaborate test song?
That test song had 1 bass note centered at 72Hz so we can't really say much about the speakers.
72Hz is up in the easy -to-hit boomy bass range that any speaker can hit so it's not testing too much.
Can the speaker hit above that note well at 1Khz equally or below it at 50Hz or 40Hz?
We can't tell since the source material had 1 main drum tone that dominated the sound spectrum.
That tone was louder making it harder to hear the midrange or treble clarity. It's a fine song but not ideal for speaker testing since we need some variety of tones.
We need a test song with multiple bass notes on different pitches with a variety of drums.
Then add some vocals that come and go as well. A single acoustic guitar doing single notes and a few arpeggiated chords mixed with a few full chords is also quite useful.
You could use that nice piano sitting there and simply play a few single test tones on C4, C3, C2 and low C1 or A1 and record how it sounds. Does it play each note at the same level?
Naturally that depends what the keyboard sends out but most units are fairly high fidelity and some can even do a real sine way output such as with Roland, Korg, and Yamaha synths.
Ideally a test song has portions with just vocals (high and clear), others with just drums and include some deep synth or bass guitar notes down in the deeper range that really tests the speaker somewhat.
72Hz on the current test track is not a challenge for most speakers and that's a note I almost try to avoid since it tends to sound boomy since that's the easiest note to hit. 72Hz is rather high and almost up into the male vocal range which can make a mix sound muddy.
    72 is around a mid-bass D note.
An octave below that would be 37HZ and the song didn't have any of that on it. Or E, F, G etc
So, ideally select a test song has a range of bass notes and sounds.
    See if the speaker can hit G at 50Hz, and a low E1 at 41Hz, D1 at 37Hz or C1 at 33Hz.
Some of those are too low for small systems like this and they simply won't do it or will do a 2nd harmonic 2x higher such as 66Hz instead of 33Hz since it can't do 33Hz. That's expected on small subs but it's still useful to see if the system hits all notes fairly equally within the range that it can do and we need to give it a fair audio signal to work with.
Manufacturers often design small subs too boomy since that lets them get louder even though it sounds kinda bad. As a result it's pretty hard to find a fairly accurate small sub.
One of the few that can hit almost all bass notes equally is the Bose Sub1 or Sub2 but that's at a higher price point a bit larger.
I have hundreds of songs and audio tracks from various synths and live bands and could make a test track if you wanted some. That would spans all the notes from 28Hz (low A) up to 20KHz and you could expand on your speaker test as an actual "Comprehensive speaker test".
Running a simple 10 second sine wave sweep from 200Hz down to 30Hz would also let your audience hear what's going on.
Run that at 80dBC, then at 90dBC volume and at 95dB too see how each one handles it.
Use full range C or Z weighted scale on a dB meter. Not dBA (A weighted) since that filters out the bass artificially.
Test tones with white noise displayed n a spectrum app is also useful.
Even on a cell phone mic would catch most of it. We need to test with white noise sometimes because the DSP on some speakers responds differently to wide spectrum sounds vs single tones and it changes the audio signal internally. Some add a lot of midrange or bass internally depending how it's set and programmed.
It's a good idea to pick up a calibrated mic for a cell phone such as a Dayton Audio iMM-6, or a UMIK-1 mic for a PC and run that with REQ (room EQ Wizard) software.
That will show the THD (total harmonic distortion), real dB levels, room reflections, time delay and can do spectral analysys, phase and many thiings if we want to really see what's going on with speakers.
That software can also make test tones, test sweep tones, white noise etc.
REQ is free, open source software and works well.

It seems as this may not be a good comparison of these speakers, for they are NOT designed for DJ mixing, rather for combining live music and vocals. The Bose works fine alone, but it works BEST with its "TuneCore" technology. When used without that additional device, it seems to basically be a PA system as opposed to a DJ- gig set up. For example it works and sounds great for vocals etc. in a Karaoke environment. Therefore all these speakers seem to be for live vocals and live music. NOT DJ with heavy bass IMHO. Thanks for the comparison.

    • @AngeloTsocosMusic
      @AngeloTsocosMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

So this video is for people who have used these live during the wedding ceremony and then again for the band and then wish to DJ in between sets. Therefore, demonstrating to people that may wish to see if they can do a whole wedding day with only one set of speakers. Did you realise this is the second video in the series. I did a live comparison of instruments and voice and got so many request to do a follow up DJ comparison I did. I never get in the way of what people think but I am sure that these 3 PAs are advertised as being. I have used the Bose with the Tone Match but was never impressed. Even after reviewing it for many shops almost all staff members agreed that if you are used to setting up an advanced mixer yourself you will get a better sound that way.

    • @djmarie2058
      @djmarie2058 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@AngeloTsocosMusic Thank you very much for your reply. Much appreciated. I did not realize you had an initial video regarding these. I own a set of the L1's and am grateful for the additional information you shared regarding the Tone Match. I was repeating what the Salesman had told me regarding the Bose Technology.
I use and advanced mixer. Have not used them for a live band. I use my pair in between live music sets. And also for 2/12 hour continuous sets, using separate mixer with Computer and/or CD's. The most important concept I could share, is prior to signing or agreeing to a venue, ask if you can prep the system first, to get good sound and balance. One has to determine how to distance the speakers correctly, and sample the sound in the room. I also learned to set the sound level a bit lower than usual, Cruze the room...( if one is possible or ask someone to do so) to assess the sound mix. Thank you very much for your informed response a hard work in sharing comparisons. Personally, I would not use the L1 series for dance music; JBL's rock the house great for EDM/ Pop dance music. I agree the bass is not strong enough on the L1's. Perhaps these are designed as you said for live music, and/ or lyrical music. All the best, and thanks again.

And the music that I listen to in everyday life, I'm giving up on Bose first, and the JBL produces a good low end but just in time for parties that don't give the details of the music piece. I think all these speakers are a step back from the technology 10-15yrs ago. They sound too stale, but given its portability and line array technology, Ill give it a pass. Check out this Roland AC-90 from 2008, without a true subwoofer and it still sound phenominal. Once you add a subwoofer, the sound is massive, clear and full. Only downfall is that its not a line array so if you are out of the range, the sound loses a bit of clarity. Otherwise, on a straight sound test, it blows away all the newer speakers regardless if used for mp3 playback or live performance. Dont let the acoustic speaker lable fool you. It does everything well! th-cam.com/video/IqGiPETjpLA/w-d-xo.html

I use a Roland AC-90 with a Roland KCW-1 subwoofer. You reckon I should just stick with that then?

@@courteaux Thanks for replying, sorry I am slow to respond and check my messages.
The overall sound depends on your preference, need and size of the venue your using it for.
My preference is clarity with nice deep sub(woofer) lows with a touch of bass(woofer). The AC90 does pretty well from my experience.
I own QSC K12.2 and Bose F1 subs and speaker. Those are definitely louder but to my ears, not that pleasing as the AC90.
The AC90 won’t be loud enough for a outdoor gig unless it’s for a smaller event.
I recently used the AC90 for an outdoor event and I found out that it works better for vocals and acoustic guitars because the music dispersion loudness and range is not that great being an acoustic speaker.
I tested it against a JBL party box 200 and the party box had much stronger music dispersion and better dynamics.
But for vocals, the party box was muddy so we used the AC90 and it made the singers sound pristine. It blended well with the party box.

I have tried the Sub Zero and the sound is horrible. The highs are harsh and unpleasant. I wouldn’t use the Sub zeros in any situation

The reverb in the JBL prxone is unusable.its nothing more than a cheep $20 guitar amplifier absolutely pathetic and cannot even plug in a separate reverb unit cos there is no return &send. We are so disappointed we would not recommend the jbl prxone to anyone.and notice they never demo with a mic with the reverb.

This is the JBL EON ONE and not the prxone you mention. The EON ONE has excellent reverb and I regularly use it for my professional gigs. I've also used a reverb pedal with it and you don't need a send and return as you can go mic to pedal to unit and only use 1 port that doesn't affect the whole amp. Works a treat.
