@Jacksmoko Thailand is very affordable and super cheap as long your not eating western food or staying franchise style hotels and resorts. McDonald's & USDA Steaks is very expensive in Thailand.
Getting/renewing a long term visa in other countries is infinitely easier than in Thailand and now they want you to file and pay taxes as a long term resident? I have no interest jumping though unnecessary hoops in order to reside in that country when I can either chose an alternate destination or spend less than 180 days a year there. They did do one good thing by changing the visa on arrival to 60 days which will make being a part time resident of the country far easier.
Good perspective. For some with no ties to permanent residence moving around is a great option. I don't get the jumping through hoops issue though. The visa issue has always been straight forward and even more so now with the 60 day on arrival. I simply my position even more by using an agent. I'm skeptical that I will never see the day Thailand is taxing the average expat retiree, Even my Thai lawyer has told me to just hold off on this topic. Anyway, good luck & I definitely appreciate your input. Thanks. 😊
Really liked the video. I am originally from Tokyo and have lived in Singapore for 12 years until early this year before relocating to Pattaya. Yes, I got puzzled by many things you shared at first, especially inefficiencies which you would rarely face in Japan and Singapore. But I realized that I should be the one who adapts to them because I am getting the benefits from Pattaya (i.e. beach life, good foods/drinks with high quality of condo at insanely cheap budget!) which no way you can get in those countries (and obviously the U.S as you mentioned). Weigh the pros and cons, manage your expectations and enjoy!
Main reason I would not retire in Pattaya seems like it’s where old guys get there fill of women, I want more substance in my retirement I would visit Pattaya but it’s to much for my simple retirement plans. Focus is to date as many Countries as possible and and make many new friends and when it’s time to slow down at my favourite country wherever that is.
There's place like Pattaya all over the world. You should travel as much as you can and do exactly what you want. I met a 80 year old guy last week that is missing his youth. He feels like he's in his last years of life and wants to relive his youth again. He's financially stable and can do anything he wants. Last night I went to eat with him, he showed up with 2 super hot girls that were all over him at the table. Fortunately we were in a dark seaside place, kind of out of view. But still, he was having a great time. When we left, I could see these 2 older women looking at him in disgust. I could also their husband's looking at Frank in jealousy. I guess the point is, everyone has their stand. The life here isn't for everyone. another thing to remember is the life we are talking about only represents 10% of Pattaya. The city has so much more to do then just see companions. Anyway, good luck

@@htgtravill4802 over 50, buy a nice condo over worth over $250k, and you only need $40k income. Average SS is $20k+ per year. For persons aged 50 years or older who have an annual pension or stable passive income. Passive income of at least USD 80,000 for the past 12 months at the time of application. Applicants with a personal income ranging between USD 40,000 and USD 80,000 a year may also be eligible, granted they have a minimum investment of USD 250,000 in Thai government bonds, foreign direct investment, Thai property, or any combination. Therefore, meeting the income requirement alone is not sufficient for this income range; the investment is also necessary to qualify. Income from employment will not be considered under this category. However, you may use social security benefits to help meet the personal income requirements.
I appreciate the input. I suspect many reading this may not be in the same situation as others. Things like having $250K in any type of assets and possibly just meeting basic retirement requirements (65K a month) in Thailand. The LTR is great option for the ones that meet the requirements.
If people want to live in these places and they don't forsee having to pay any tax, they aren't using their money wisely. I've had a gripe for a while that I notice an increase of people who don't seem to realize traveling and expat life carries responsibilities.
Interesting perspective, I think most people want to pay less taxes. Thailand has been that haven for years. Thailand's now equalizing themselves with the rest of the world now.
It makes sense. You pay tax where you are a tax resident (usually if you spend more than 6 months a year there) if you are earning enough to pay tax in that country. On the flip side, you should not be paying tax in your home country (usually if you spend less than 6 months a year there) as you are no longer a tax resident.
Well, even if I can avoid paying taxes, I object to doing all the paperwork. In addition, the more I look at Thai immigration, the more it looks like Russia. Constantly having to report where I am. If I go to some island for a couple of days, they will report me being there and when I come back I have to report to immigration where I am. There are also lots of looming real estate issues with things being overbuilt currently.

He suggested, If I wanted to make a change and possibly go to Thailand. To rent a storage unit. Then put everything that I couldn't live without in that storage unit. He suggested to keep going back to my possessions and making sure I didn't want anything else. I did exactly this. Then I hired an auctioneer. She told me my estate would bring approximately $25K in my pocket. Personally I thought that was light as I was thinking more like $100K. But that just goes to show you, your stuff is only worth as much as the buyer is willing to pay for it. The auction took 2 days. When it was done everything was gone. It was like a massive weight was taken off my chest. The auctioneer's office sent me check for $56K which I was pleasantly surprised. Turned out I sold 43 guns that brought over face value besides other items as well. Unfortunately, I still have this storage unit. I've been paying $125 month on it for over 5 years and haven't spent 10 minutes in it in years. I keep thinking maybe someday I will need that crap. Someday, I will probably make a video about this. Hi Tom, great advice on adapting to a life in Thailand. Regarding Pattaya beach cleanliness. Due to the local fishing and large population, I've read that the beach does have debris near the shore and on the beach. That's why some beach condo's they place a "floating debris barriers" for their residents. An example, In Mexico where horses are allowed on the beach, you'll find horse debris everywhere and make the experience very sad. All beaches will have debris. does the city rake the beaches to clear all forms of debris on a regular basis?
I have heard that some Thais don’t understand that they disrespect you if they are late and won’t even apologize if they are late. If I had a date I would maybe wait 30 minutes and I would be gone
George, Some condos are pet-friendly but most are not. Another thing to note, is that even if the building complex is pet-friendly, the land owner may not be. It's something to definitely find out before you move in.
G'day. In Australia we have a retirement system called superannuation. Like a 401k. Compulsory contributions by the employer and employees can voluntarily contribute up to $28k combined per year. The tax rate on contributions is 15% you can't access the funds until 60. You pay little tax on any interest the superannuation earns. Pension age here is 67.5 years old. The new tax laws concern Australia ex pats because if Thailand doesn't believe we have paid enough tax on our superannuation, will they charge us a further 20% on top of the 15% we have already paid the Australian government?
I still think it's a developing story. I hate speculation. Hopefully it will turn to it's original intentions. The radio discussed this somewhat this morning. th-cam.com/video/uIcwKvWyM78/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BS00IaDiKTLrFKd9
I'm sorry, I think you need to expand your boundaries maybe go golfing or to Dongtan beach in the evening for beach volleyball, or Jomtien for pickleball, or just about any coffee shop, of course roadside restaurants are great for people watching or meeting people as well. Going to the beach, rent a chair, take a walk on the boardwalk, grab a massage or go to Koh Larn. Take the Ferry and meet a ton of people, hang out at your accommodation pool and meet people there, heck I even meet people on the elevators. Many of the beaches have aerobics classes every evening. Bali high offer fishing tours where you can meet even more people. I think you have to find what interest you and go meet the like minded people doing those things. If nothing else, and I know this is a bar. You could come meet me at Leo's on Wednesdays/Saturdays at Leo's to eat and a cola. maps.app.goo.gl/tFnKatoaCSFj68re6 Good Luck, Tom

As a US citizen, you are expected to pay taxes to US government, no matter where you live. You have to file a federal tax return if you gross income is at least $13500 annually and you are under 65 years old and single, and 15,700 for those 56 and older. If you are single and receive social security, that social security will not be taxed, as long as your gross income does not exceed $25,000 a year. The only country I know that won't tax you, if you live there, is Costa Rica, provided that your funds come from abroad and you don't work there. The cool thing about Costa Rica is that if you stay there 4 continuous months, you are eligible for their Permanent Residency and entitled to their social medical care. For that they take 10% of your incoming monthly pension. Everywhere else, you are basically double taxed. Go Chiefs!
The tax experts who have done videos on this new law, state that if you pay tax in your home country-you should not be liable here, so not double taxed.
@@generealty Well, IRS won't let anyone get away with not paying taxes, so I don't understand why they would even bring that up to US citizens? Who doesn't pay taxes in US? Everyone has to file their taxes at the end of the year. There is no money coming from US that has not been taxed already, I assume that goes for other Western countries as well. So who is this law for? Who is bringing money in without paying taxes?
@@franky3231 Maybe people on low pensions not liable to pay tax back home. For example UK Gov Pension is pathetically low and currently under thresshold to pay tax, but might be more than Thai thresshold. Also this Thai law is probably meant mostly for Thais that invested overseas bringing it back. However if you live here for over 180 days each year you now are responsible for obtaining a T.I.N for maybe the first time. Also keep documents to prove your finances. This might be problematic for the very elderly, or those not computer savy. It is our responsibity to prove/disprove , not the Thai Tax Department, which might be off-putting to many.
@@generealtythanks for your post, I'll research those types of videos.
Easy just don't stay there more than 170 days mate. These are the places to travel to for 6 months of the year. Who would tolerate all that paperwork?
Did you retire from the Air Force Tom? I served from 79- 83 ....long time ago..
Yes, I served 23 years
Im finding Thailand very lonely. I dont drink and that seems to be the only way to meet people, its the biggest challenge for me.
You could come meet me at Leo's on Wednesdays/Saturdays at Leo's to eat and a cola. maps.app.goo.gl/tFnKatoaCSFj68re6
Good Luck, Tom
@@MargaritasinParadise That's very generous of you to write this post, You've nailed it. Everything I need to do, I'm just also dealing with culture shock, been here two months. If I'm ever near that Bar, I will swing by and say hello, I've been living in Boston Ma for 40 years also.

@@barryoneill-ec9zz Ay? I'm from the UK living in Thailand and Vietnam alone since 2016 and I've never drank alcohol and have no problem meeting anyone are very rarely go to a bar. It's all about mindset and being motivated to live your best life.
To be honest though, I didn't come half way around the world to meet more people from the UK or the West, I came here to get away from them, most of them are nothing but trouble.
I do my own thing, keep fit, cycling, walking, watch sports live and on TV, do stuff online and have random conversations every time I go out and couldn't be happier. Cost of living, safety, culture, friendliness of locals, every day sun, what's not to like. 🥰
Compared to living in the collapsing West, this life is on a different level 👍🥳

Look into tax treaties. You usually have to pay the diffrence annually.
Great information
Interesting. I couldn't care less if farangs stay or go. 😂 except the several I know . Google is your friend 👍✌️❣️🇹🇭
During the pandemic, I loved being here alone. It was really a great time in Thailand short of so many people suffering. So, I think I understand your point even though I know how much better Pattaya is when the economy is booming.😛😛😛
When you are buying a property, you would bring more then a million bt.
Would you pay tax on that money?
I'm not a financial guy, definitely check with a lawyer or even look on Siam-Legal's website. Good luck
Are they going to tax foreign living in Thailand like pension from Scott new Zealand
It sounds like they’re trying to figure this out now.
I didn’t know you did shout-outs for buying you a coffee… I bought you a coffee last Monday…where is mine? Just kidding, Tom, have a good one…LOL
Hahaha, oops! I do several videos ahead of time. Sometimes those videos get bumped because of timeframes ect... Anyway, I do keep track of my shoutouts and just line through my list when I add them to a video, unfortunately some videos don't air the same month they’re published. Does that make sense? Anyway, I appreciate everyone that helps support me. I hate to even ask but like TH-cam tells me, if I don't mention it than no one will know. Anyway, Thank You and eventually you'll hear your name come out. 😛😍😛

Hahaha, I may use that line. 😂😂😂
I think I could adjust to Thai time very well. 😂 I've been on the non-stop treadmill of the US and need to get off.
I get that. Some people can adjust to that beach hippie lifestyle right away.😄🙃😄
Go Chiefs DT . The main thing I hate about Thailand is being able to watch football it seems the superbowl is the only game the bars show live.
Anymore, there are so many big sports bars here that stay open almost 24 hours. Places like I Rovers, Danny, Hemingway's & Brewdogs will let you watch any game you want.

I think one of my ex girlfriends didnt learn the lesson that thais are not supposed to raise them voices. She screamed her head off at me when she found out i was cheating with another girl. I want to know your friend that has 6 condos, I need to learn how he does it.

Just say NO to Thai Taxes !!
Hahaha, hopefully they won't effect to many
Go San Francisco 49ers!
Nice, great team as well.
Go Chiefs!
Good info, I enjoy your perspective. Not sure about be double taxed though.
A reason why you would not want to become a US citizen and why some are renouncing their US citizenship.
I'm not sure if I'm reading this right? US citizenship is potentially one one the most valuable things in the world in my opinion.

One of my 2 all-time favorite players in football was Elway. In my opinion the greatest QB ever. The Orange Crush!
Go kansas Chiefs

ERRRRRR! 😆
I have no intention of paying taxes when I am already being taxed in the United States.
Some of these expats seem to dance around the edge of the Thai tax law, giving the impression that my already US taxed pension will be taxed again.
I'm already living in the Philippines and am willing to take a chance with jumping through Thailand's seemingly endless visa hoops. I'd draw the line at them digging into my pockets when I'd already be contributing to their economy by utilizing their goods and services
@@franky3231 As far as I know, it is only the US that taxes citizens who no longer live there. This is why some renounce their US citizenship.
