A study has shown that the ideal moisture content for composting worms is 77% and not 40 - 45% like this video says. Most probably worms like it as moist as possible bc they then can slide through the compost material with ease. But 77% will be borderline to where the water content closes the air holes and it turns anaerobic. So to avoid overdoing moisture, aim for about 65 - 70%. Standard (hot) compost (without worms) has an ideal water content of 50%. Of course, especially when water is scarce, you can compost and vermicompost also with less moisture. When the vermicomposting process has turned the compost mostly into vermicast you let it dry to around 30% moisture so that the material is screenable.
I am planning to do Aquaponic and organic farm on our family lands 20 aces , in few years. That why I am doing researching and learning, and reading books. I will work in the farms for practical knowledge in few years as well. The information from Shramajeevi are very helpful, especially using English narrating.
Very good video, informative! Thank you for sharing... I am an organic farmer myself. I produce my own fertilizer thru vermiculture (African Night Crawler Worms) using the droppings of my rabbits as substrates together with grass cuttings and wood chips. I grow vegetables, forage crops and dragon fruit in my urban farm in Nairobi, Kenya. Very productive, sustainable and profitable method of farming. Cheers!
Hello i want to try vermicompost this year. I have one question, can I use Asian jumper worm , instead of using the other worms which people normally do? The reasons is because i have lots of jumper worm in my garden.. Your answer will be appreciated , Thankyou
the worms you want are tiger, red and blue wrigglers. The african night crawler burrows deep but is actually a compost worm a very very large worm, a varity of the three is best
Nice video however "Vermi-wash" can be toxic as it hasn't been fully processed by the worms and should be researched and studied so people understand the risks, there are ways to cope with this.
I use my leachate on plants and they love it. A simple smell test will detect if it has become anaerobic. I have never once had a smelly leachate in my setup
Shramajeevi I have a question bothering me just second ago, am about to use glysophate ( hercides) for weeding tomorrow afternoon because manual weeding is very costly but at same time am confused whether I can still compost them or not due to herbicides residues, or would it harm the worms? Please your speed response will be highly appreciated, I mean can I still compost weeds killed by using herbicides?
Sir sorry for the delay. You can compost the weeds killed by herbicides but in a separate heap. The concentration of the chemical comes down after few months and gets decomposed slowly. However the residue of the chemical will remain in the compost for years. So if you have other organic stuff for composting, avoid using this. In the long run avoid using herbicide itself and use brush cutter machines for weeding.

There are basically two types. One feeding on soil and another feeding on organic materials. So your success depending on which type that is. Try
Clear and easy to understand.

For sure, the chemical compound in this herbicide is fatal for earthworms and microorganisms working on your compost at least in initial months.
Shramajeevi Am most greatful, l have waited for your response, so now I know the best step, compliments of your kindest self
