'Can you bypass the meter?' Believe it or not, it's actually a question we have been asked multiple times lately. The short and only answer is obviously no! This is extremely dangerous and also illegally. However, there are a few very simple things you can put in place, that won't cost a lot and could save you a fortune. We're all worried about how we will be able to afford our energy bills during this energy crisis, so hopefully, you can implement a few of these tips to save you some money.

As to by-passing your meter, yes it is dangerous-but it means your usage Kw hrs suddenly becomes zero! Do people not think that the service suppliers expect this kind of thing especially now with prices going through the roof? -they will be on the look out for such sudden changes!! Well Jordan, as to your payment problem, I would say sue the B.... hard!
Remember your Dad and think of your problem as his and really go after them. I'm retired now and over the years found that there are people out there who make a profession of not paying. As to big houses, they were always a red flag to me, just ask yourself how they got there! Try and find out their profession, that will give a clue! Be a cynic, dont trust anyone until you know otherwise. Good Luck with the business.
I wish i was able to switch suppliers or have a smart meter. For some reason my mater has 2 MPAN's cand its only one supply. for this reason i am unable to switch. Been stuck with scottish power for years, they were supposed to change our meter to a standard meter. Fed up!
Rubbish on the bulbs , I've had them for years and bills went up from 150 a month g&e to 540 a month , 2 hours heating mornings 2 at night , use a 25w at night in bed on tablet , e\e TV that I don't watch apart from e\e dvd player , AA f\f , curtain up behind door , houses built for coal with lathing plaster so no cavity wall insulation , house is like a tomb in winter even with heating on , they are reaping the benefits and I curse them for it for those like elderly and I'll health that suffer ,
love the electric socket with corroded water pipe right above it!

I already wrote the comment about what law says that person can be arrested and who's going to do that .
I turned everything off apart from fridge/freezer, router and printer. Total yearly saving worked out at £2.46. Edit - actually I did turn off the freezer in the garage and forgot to turn it back on £30 of food wasted 😢

I calculated a similar saving. Not worth the hassle, plus I need the Wifi for the doorbell, Lamps etc. Disconnecting the internet almost guarantees something needs reconnecting manually.

my advice.. (for people without solar etc) dont get a smart meter fitted by your energy firm, just buy an after market clamp on meter/monitor if you want to monitor your usage

Lousy advice, my smart meter allows me to use TOU tariffs, in my case to charge my batteries, it also allows me to be paid very well for exports, often exporting the electric I imported at cheap rate and exporting at peak rate.
You saved me money even whilst I was watching the video, when about halfway through you turned off my living room lamp! 😂

Yeah. In era of WiFi enabled security cameras and all.
I have no idea why you would put a smart plug on a tumble drier or washing machine. They’ll draw 0w when not in use and there is no use being able to remotely turn them off. It’s not like you’d do it mid-cycle because you’re using too much. Plus, don’t forget the energy draw from the plug itself. I wouldn’t be surprised if the standby mode on a lot of appliances is better than the efficiency of a smart plug.
Exactly. Also if I remember correctly, there's rules (if this still apply) that it must be 0.5 watt or below when on standby. I dunno if that applied to everything including smart bulbs.

What if I took my smart meter out and left it in my front garden in a box obviously water proof box n told britsh gas to come and collect it and put all the wires together to make my electric work how would that be stealing because technically its only stealing if your registered to a company with their smart meter think about it there robbing you do we get electric from Russia no absoulte rubbish do we get gas from Russia no we don't there just boosting prices for joke dont believe me do your research test me😂

Anything using wireless will consume at least 1 watt or more due to the fact the receiver has to be powered continuously, it's a pointless exercise.
Our bills went up almost immediately after we had our meter changed from the mechanical dial type. I was convinced that the meters must be recording the current peaks which occur during the first few ms of an appliance being turned on, which were previously damped by the mechanical style meter due to the inertia of the disc. So I contacted Honeywell who manufactured the meters at the time and they confirmed that the meters do record the initial peaks which can cumulatively add more to your bill. Fortunately they have software "damping", but the amount recorded is adjustable by the network/installer (via software and infra-red comms interface). So I guess if all refrigerators and pumps etc incorporated a "soft start" it might help?

Electronic meters measure distorted currents from LED and switched-mode power supplies more accurately than mechanical meters.

@@TheUnclestein "Damping" is not the correct term in this context, I would consider damping a resistive term. Mechanical meters have a damping (usually an Eddy current brake) to prevent the disc from spinning out of control. A meter has 2 low-pass elements (integrators). The first one is the inertia of the disc or the LPF in front of the AD convertor of an electronic meter. The cut-off of the latter can be a few kHz. The second integrator gathers the cumulative energy.
Another source of confusion is how energy is measured. Residential meters measure the vector product of current and voltage, the "real energy" in Watt. Specialist meters also measure the product of the scalar values of current and voltage, the "apparent energy" in VoltAmpere. If current and voltage were 90 degrees out of phase, you would not seem to use any energy, but the current still puts a load on the grid. Heavy users may pay an additional tariff if the difference between the energies is too big.

Have you seen the cost of the Tapo 110 plug they are selling around £20 so the saving would have to be quite large there would be no saving with a washing machine or dishwasher as they use power when you turn them on not on standby , all the items he has listed cost a packet and would take around 3 years to potentially break even if not 5 years
Exactly. These are not solutions for people struggling to pay bills. They are gadgets and tech for people who have money. Like installing solar, not many people can afford it 🙄
If you are on an ADSL internet line and disconnect the router from the mains frequently the DSLAM at the other end of the connection will think it needs to slow the connection speed to reduce the “interference/noise” that is on the line. You have to phone your ISP and plead with them to reset their end to get good speed again.
By all means turn off your WiFi extenders and mesh boxes. But don’t turn off your main incoming router and its modem box (if it has one).
Who came up with that logic ! Less pings, slow the circuit down worse than it is. You can see the difference in logic, mobile phones actually increase the output of the handset when it starts to panic if it cannot contact the cell tower.

I had it described to me as this. It's like turning up the bass on music you might not be able to hear all the music as clearly but it can be heard further away, or through walls.
So it's like there is a fault with your line when the DSLAM losers the connection so it changes the wavelength to try to make sure it can connect.
yup agreed Simon, same happens on VDSL as well and can be even more drastic. Also same with Virgin media although you don't lose the speed, you end up with the angry mob after you. (used to turn it off when on holiday for two weeks only to come home to about two angry letters telling me to switch it back on or face consequences - this is due to Modem pirates in the past hacking the config to give more speed and thus terminating the return path so VM - then NTL wouldn't know and to stop old config overriding hack. this made the modem/router invisible to the network...)
nope he said wifi router as in a silly wifi booster, most asdl routers use buggerall electric these days anyways in a modern stud wall house not much need for for wifi boosters pretty easy to buy a full roll of ethernet cable and plugs and create your own custom ethernet extension if you have multiple devices in a couple of rooms and buy a 8 port unmanged switch 1 in 7 devices accessable, plus much better speeds hardwired and less likely to get hacked versus wifi everything
@@Dave250490 it's to do with connection attempts at the DSLAM nothing to do with pings logic says that if a device is constantly reattempting the connection handshake it has lost its connection so the line must be unstable, so decrease the speed to the point the reconnections stop
Honestly just bypass your meters. Screw the greedy corporate profits, its time for these electric companies to suffer and go bankrupt. I hope the state buys back all electrical generation and distribution as it should be !
You can save even more. Get a box with a grid over it. Put the dishes in it when having a shower.
2:30 in Dubai, (or at least somewhere in the UAE), Phillips sells LED bulbs which have their LEDs purposely undervolted so that they last longer...

A sort of similar lamp is called "philips ultra efficient". It is not quite the same but the closest I could find in Europe. it also has a 50k hours lifetime rating instead of the usual 15k - 25k.

Having seen how badly (horrifically) wrong a main fuse removal can go (as performed by an engineer called Colin from Scottish Hydro back in 2003), I wouldn't want to go near one of those damn things! It took another engineer from Hydro almost a day to replace the wiring that had been damaged by the blast (all the way from my flat to the ground-floor distribution panel) and I still have the remains of the BICC fuse (and holder) as a memento.
It’s only dangerous if there is a load drawing power. If he would of isolated properly then he wouldn’t of had a flashover and nearly killed and others.
Those fuse holders fall to bits and they arc if they are stuck in place. Even with no load its dangerous.

Recently went away for a week so turned everything off, including the networking, but left only the 2 fridge freezers on. We used 3.25kWh a day in that week. So at the moment we are using up whats in the fridge freezer in the utility room and will then turn that off. Checking the one in the kitchen on its own, it uses about 1.75 kwh a day on its own, it was new in 1997. A newer fridge freezer will use about 1kWh per day but cost us £500ish. It will take 5 years to pay back, so at the moment its staying.
3kwh a DAY for TWO fridge freezers?? That's ridiculously cheap.
With regards to bill, it's not the amount that unit costs have gone up.
It's the fact I'm having to subsidise everyone else who's been paying below costs when there supplier went bump via the standing charge.
It's a messed up system thats very unfair.
I hope they get those standing charges scrapped and start billing customers for their own uses. I don't want to pay for others usage.
It's the same with those who were never furloughed through the coronas. I didn't have a single day of furlough but i'll be paying for everyone else who had that luxury.

precisly, the sooner we pay for the actual generation cost of electric as opposed to electricity being based on the wholesale cost of gas the better we will all be,i have 9 wind turbines one side of my and 16,832 solar panel farm 400 yards from me, BUT they get a artifical high guranteed price per gwh based on long term contract prices based on the wholesale gas price@ the time of signing all wrong, if we paid actual costs say on a solar farm(solar much cheaper nowadays) intial cost divided by 25 years plus a margin for annual maintainance and then add 10-15% annual profit we would be paying much less, tiying electric wholesale prices to the international gas wholesale prices are sheer lunacy, this is why the electric companies are making millions ££££s in profits, also we literally have thousands of acres of roof spaces on factory units /shopping centres etc etc that would facilitate quite easily proably double or quadruple our current commercial solar installs, travel to Scotland and look @ how many hundereds of wind turbines just SSE have put up in the last 20 yrs, you cant tell me hand on heart the standing charge has to rise 20p plus per day because Putin is crazy we have a abundance of cheap renewables already even before Dogger bank is connected, the standing charge is a out and out con full stop

I'm sticking with my dumb meter as long as possible because, just like VW with their emission scandal, the cynic in me doesn't trust the energy companies to resist the temptation to fudge their software to count faster.
They can do what they want and you wouldn’t even know mate. They are all making millions of profit not losses from this so called russia Ukraine thing. If things had gone up for them then it would show because profits would be the same as previous or similar.

This surly is theft on behalf of the energy companies as it removes the ability for consumers to save money.
The government should cap the daily standing charge to make it a level playing field.

Here in Thailand, August last year our bill for electric was 2200tbht, this August it was 2675tbht for as near as makes no difference the same consumption.
Australian here. I use energy monitoring smart plugs on my heavy draw appliances and it's very useful to know what they've used.
Pro tip for saving electricity. Remove the main fuse and don't put it back in

You can only be prosecuted under Health and Safety regulations if you pull it. So if you can prove that you’re practices we’re safe when you pulled it, or because to not do so was unsafe, you can’t be prosecuted.

Genuine question, does that actually still allow you to use the electrics/does it just stop the meter going and I thought fuse is there for protection (assuming it's like a plug fuse but bigger?)
@@SunnySingh-ee1df no fuse, no power. Technically you could use a piece of correctly sized tube to replace the fuse. It’s done in blocks of flats/HMO’s etc.. However the incoming mains supply MUST HAVE A FUSE.
Replacing the DNO’s fuse with something solid is exceptionally dangerous. Seriously, don’t touch it. There’s absolutely nothing to stop you being killed if you mess up.
What's a dish washer. I use a tap and a green scrubber.
I rent as I 'cant afford a mortgage' so I pay more money per month on rent instead. Still dont get this logic. Anyway I have not turned on the heating in this place since I moved in, only things that are left on standby ever is WiFi router and my fridge, I turn off everything else at their relative main switch/socket switch, I have hot water to only come on literally 10 minutes a day (Which is enough when you live on your own id say and I get it to do it only at the times would normally use it). I can't do any more work hours as I'm disabled (and legally restricted from some work due to that), but not disabled enough that I get any support from the Gov. I dont know what else I can do and I am struggling to afford this major hike at over doubling electricity cost alone. I am stuck to think what else I can do. Any suggestions?

It costs what it costs to run. plus a few extra watts that the plug uses?..
I imagine you can set machines to run during solar panel energy production and/or when you have excess energy being generated and don't want to dump it in to the grid.
Knowing how much devices use, makes you likely use them less or be more efficient in their usage to cut costs. having the plug doesn't inherently save anything

Spent a few quid on Osram LED GU10 for all 35 downlights in the house over 6 years ago when I moved in and have had just 2 failures in that time. Those were 4.8w to replace some 35w and some 50w. Now IKEA have launched Solhetta which seem to be the most efficient, same brightness but just 3w, and some less bright ones at 2w, the heat is barely perceivable! Well under a tenth halogen.

How do the smart thermostats for radiators save any energy? How is this any different from the non-electronic individual radiator thermostats that are often found in homes?

Great video! Do be aware however that while turning off devices on standby help in the savings, smart devices like smart plugs, smart lightbulbs, and thermostats consume energy themselves in just the same way also... Just something to keep in mind.

All these tips will save a few pennies per week, but for meaningful savings you will need to expend thousands of pounds on solar systems, ground source heat pumps,sealed unit double glazing, wall floor and roof insulation. The light bulbs really do help a lot. The radiators probably do if it allows you to reduce the amount of heating you are doing and still be comfortable. Most of the other suggestions yes will give very small savings. I bought a plug-in (not smart) power meter and measured everything I could, and the only standby sinner in the house was a very old microwave which used 5.5W or about £15 per year. Due to regulations, standby on modern devices is very good.

Why should I have to do anything when the people that run the energy firms get millions of pounds in bonuses. You tell the kids it’s bath night once a week and wear your cloths for three days before washing them. What a state to be in don’t get me started on the price of food.
Helpful video Jordan. I installed the Tado smart heating system about a year ago and it has saved us a small fortune in heating oil. We live in an extended cottage where part of the building is 175 years old and although modernised about 14 years ago at the same time as it was extended, that older part of the building is always much harder to heat.
So we now have smart TRVs on almost all of our radiators and use that to heat rooms on a “just in time” basis depending on which rooms we use at different times and on different days. We can heat bedrooms and shower room just before it’s time to get up and we can do things like heat the guest room for an hour once a week when not in use just to make sure it doesn’t get damp. It can also detect when you open a window in a room and turn off the radiator, and can even tell when all occupants are away from home and reduce heating to a minimum.
It wasn’t cheap to install, especially since we have 11 smart TRVs, but you can often get good discounts on packs of 2, 3 or 4 TRVs on Amazon and even from Tado themselves. I reckon it cost us £500-600 in total but we use something like 3000 litres of heating oil a year and the Tado system is reducing oil usage by a minimum of 25% based on my calculations so the payback period is probably around 1 year at today’s oil prices. I also did a full service on our boiler including replacing the very old and noisy circulation pump for a new one and added a magnetic filter.
Next job is to get up the loft and lag the heating pipes where the mice have shredded the existing foam lagging and set up a few traps to stop it happening again! I’ll probably add some more general insulation while I’m up there. Oh and the loft hatch isn’t insulated so will attend to that as well. And I might install some under skirting board foam seals to keep the draughts out.
Always lots of small things we can do which add up to real savings. Draught proofing is often one of the things you can do with the lowest cost and the highest savings.

@@patthewoodboy it's not a smart meter, it's a smart heating control system and it saves money by ensuring the right amount of heat reaches the right rooms at the right time. Simple on-off timed controls and static radiator thermostats can't achieve this effectively and lots of heat is lost as a result. Not a promo ad as someone above flippantly suggested and no we're not colder now either. Yes, oil is usually paid for at time of delivery (actually you can do it by direct debit too now) but if you use less then it costs you less. Not rocket science.
Mate, I haven't had someone come to my house to check the electricity or gas meter for more than 10 years now and my electricity has been bypassed for almost 8 years.
The Smart meter is an easy way for the energy company to force you onto a key meter system. They can do it without even visiting your property and just flick a switch and mail you the key. Now you're metered. Never ever do smart. Tell them you have a medical device as well. I have the medical assistance alarm in my home. Costs £5 a month but they can never put me on a meter no matter how hard it is for me to pay my bill.
I like your videos. But how does a smart plug saves you money on a dishwasher? The main power use is when in use and once it has run the cycle it is on standby. Is the money not set of by the energy consumption of the plug as it always draws energy to be reachable? Do I miss something?
I agree on smart plugs on like tv and media centres. As you can switch of the tv, receiver dvd players etc in one go, I personally have this linked to my hue switch and alarm system. So in case I forget to switch of the tv area when leaving the house it will be switched off if I put the alarm in away mode via an automation.
I bypassed ours a couple of months back.. really easy and saved us a fortune 😂

Electric blankets instead of whole house heating, if that's an option. Heating an entire room is so inefficient. So much energy lost. A standard electric blanket will consume around 100-150W, and keep you warm enough. That's a tenth of what running the radiator would use. You can even get a heated poncho which is a bit better shaped for wearing to your desk.
My mum is disabled and she had a smart meter installed 6months ago .. since than it stopped communicating with the app and with the provider
We contacted British gas hundreds of times and they refused to fix it or changed it to old one and we arrived to a dead end with them..the meter is in the basement and nightmare for her to reach.
Is bypassing the meter a fair way in her case?
Rather than buying your way out of the "problem" with tech, in the short term i would recommend looking at ways to live your life as close to normal, but using less energy. Especially for people who are genuinely hard-pressed for money:
- Turn down the heating a couple of degrees.
- Turn up the temperature on the fridge to 6 or 7C instead of 4 or 5C, and don't expect things to last 3 weeks in there.
- Cook with the microwave where possible, not the oven or a pan full of water.
- Change your meals to things that require less cooking time.
- Shower once or twice a week less.
Those sorts of things will have an immediate impact and require no upfront investment. They'll also save a lot more energy than avoiding standby mode on a few devices (which you should also do, of course)

@@TWOKDOK1 Technically it increases the risk, as low temperatures don't kill it, they just slow down reproduction. That is why i suggested that you shouldn't expect food to last as long. Cleaning your fridge occasionally is also a good idea for this :)
I would comment that i've always kept my fridge at 6C and we've not yet given ourselves food poisoning.
I have a bunch of P100 Tapo plugs (as pictured at 4:39) but they don't monitor power consumption (P110 and P115 do). But as I was poking around in the app as I was watching I did a firmware update which immediately turned off my computer as I was watching you 😅

I recently fitted an LED lamp to an outside light, turned on and off using a digital plug in timer. With the timer in its off mode/cycle the light stays on! Bought another timer still the same. Fitted a standard bulb it works? Now using the old fashioned timer and the LED works. Any idea's why with a digital timer and LED this happens?
Just to add as an Openreach engineer please leave your router on otherwise you may have issues with your broadband. If your router is seen as not connected for a few days your service provider may create a job for us to come out and have a look at why, Sometimes without asking you.
Yup, plus it doesn't get security updates when off obviously and if you're really unlucky, not be able to connect after, let's say due to a certificate update.
@@N3MAID3S that's a load of rubbish. I'm with BT and have never used the supplied Routers. I've always used my own enterprise grade routers and firewalls. I do the security firmware patches not BT. The connection to our internet providers is not certificate based. I also turn off my router when away and have never had a problem reconnecting and never had Openreach "turn up" to check what's wrong. At the end of the day people need to save money, it might only be pennies but this rubbish about turning off your router off may cause you trouble is absolute rubbish.

got to agree with the LED bulbs, we remodelled our Victorian 4-bed Terrace in 2013 with our retirement and old age in mind. we went full-on rewiring with LEDs in all rooms, if we turned them all on at once we would only be pulling 140w. Had 9x solar on the roof at the same time, it was repaid (a tad under 5k on a south-facing roof)by the FiT payments alone in October last year. Only the 2 of us living here now but our July/August/September daily usage from the grid was averaging 3KWH, to yesterday October was just under 3.7. We have had no heating on so far this year as we also insulated all the exterior walls with 50mm Pu boards, full 300mm of glass fibre in the roof space and 200 between ceiling downstairs and upstairs floor. the current front room, N facing, temperature (10am overcast and raining) is 20C and even at night, we have yet to drop below 19C.

Sorry to tell you but the solar panels are a total scandal, I work for a major housing firm and we use them as it’s cheaper than the square footage of roofing, in typical year round weather in the UK, it would take about two years to save the amount of money the copper wiring costs, they will tell you the sales pitch like over five year it pays for itself, but unfortunately even the high end solar panels like the ones nasa use, the cells deplete and have a shelf life, not the nasa ones but it’s inevitable, within 18 months your entire day will generate enough electricity to boil a kettle once, they are a scam and my poor old nan was almost swindled by the very guys our firm hires, he seen pictures of me in the house and said he couldn’t do that to her and explained it was a rip off, you can buy a wind up torch, remove the components and put flights on it as a wind turbine that’s 5x more productive and it costs less than £5

Apart from the initial costs they have not cost me a penny and I receive around £750 a year in FiT payments from British Gas. Maybe the company you work for uses 5th-rate fittings and fitters, we used a local well-rated business and over a decade of use we are well pleased with the results. The people you work for sound like a scam, how do you sleep at night knowing what you know about them?
@@mrLoftladder that’s the reality of solar panels otherwise they would be standard as it’s cheaper to solar panel a roof as you can save money on the cost with roofing which is a skilled trade, even the government acknowledges they are symbolic and yield no real benefits, but like I’ve said even NASA have issues with the decay of the cells as it’s essentially heating up a tiny flow of movement that a hand wound radio would substantially out perform, if you have them attached to say just LED style lights then it may appear is if the are more efficient than they are.

I'd like solar and battery storage but finding a good installer in my area that doesn't charge rip-off installation prices is very challenging. I can buy the hardware for a 8kWpv + 10Kwh battery system on retail sites for £7K, but installers will charge an extra £7K on top. How can they justify that for just 2 or 3 days work?

I'm an NICEIC approved electrician & will be starting solar installs early next year, I already do EV installs, I have a customer who wants a battery integrated into his existing pv system. He sourced the battery at 3k, got prices of 6k to supply & fit it! I plan to use quality products & keep my prices affordable for people. Unfortunately the whole solar side of my industry is full of shady characters, but I am sure I can use this fact as leverage to establish myself....My strongest piece of advice at the point of deciding what company to use, don't trust people in suits! Find a SMALL LOCAL company, but it can be a mine field...
Edit: Look for locally installed systems on people's houses & knock on their doors & ask questions!

One better than that for you. Doing a drugs raid on a house that stood right on the pavement edge. The concrete street lampost was up against the house wall. I noticed that there was a cable through the house wall and back of the lampost, tapping into the street light supply, which supplied the heating, light and ventilation for the crop in the loft. When the YEB came to make safe the electric supply, they also found that the meter had been bypassed, and the "tails" were two wire coathangers wrapped in cellotape.
Not happy about smart meters. At the moment the energy companies can only, legally, read the meter once a month. There are proposals in the pipeline to allow meters to be read half-hourly. This will then roll on to us being charged at varing rates throughout the day, i.e. hirer rates at peak times. The ultimate sanction being able to cut you off remotely!
They have been offering half hour reads since I started installing them 8 years ago mate don’t know what your on about

I have no complaints on time of use tariffs at all. I was on Octopus Agile during the first part of the pandemic. Saved me £15-20 a month being able to load shift to cheaper periods of the day, particularly when charging EVs, and I got the benefit of plunge pricing when there was too much wind power available on the grid. It has now become too expensive due to the gas crisis, but will eventually return. It’s even better when the homeowner has battery storage.
I placed smart plugs on both our old freezers, left them a month to get decent energy readings. BOTH used over 1KWH per day, replaced with a more modern huge freezer, energy usage is now about 0.5kwh per day, saving 1.5 per day.

Before everyone runs out and starts buying them, it is worth remembering that these devices cost quite a bit of money (including fitting in the case of thermostats and smart meters). There is a significant time before the investment is returned.
Also, the saving from swapping to LED light bulbs is usually overestimated when people discuss domestic use. The reason being that all the "wasted" energy from a halogen or resistance bulb comes out in the form of heat, and for half of the year we have to heat our houses anyway. So it isn't necessarily wasted energy. In a business context, where air-conditioning may be taking that heat away (especially in summer) it is obviously a different story. So i would not recommend for anyone to immediately halogen bulbs now that temperatures are falling, but instead to wait until the bulbs fail and swap to LEDs then.
Although if you have gas heating, it is still cheaper to make up the "missing" heat with gas than electricity.
Except that most of the heat from a recessed halogen light goes into the ceiling void & can cause an increased fire risk. A kitchen with 10 downlights will most likely consume 350-500W when turned on, reduced to ~40-70W when converted to LED. It's a no -brainer.

9:45 Pedantic here. You can't use 3kW per day. You could however use 3kWh, which isn't much. When we were on holiday our house was using 16kWh! Fortunately the solar panels and powerwall meant we weren't paying for very much of that. We have CCTV and also a computer that needed to be left on.
Right so 3kWh or £14.40 every 24 hours at 20 pence per kWh is not much to you? For most that sort of hourly consumption would be horrendously expensive.

If you left a 3kW heater on, that would be using 3kWh each hour, and so would cost £14.40 per 24hrs.
3kWh in a day means your empty house was using an average of 125w, or just over half an amp. That’s like leaving all the lights on in a three-bed semi with 15w led lighting (100w equivalent) in every room - including the hall and landing (which sounds a lot). Or, that’s a little less than my laptop when it’s on (which doesn’t sound like much). Boy, now I’m confused!!
Turning off any modern tv at the wall instead of leaving it on standby will save you about a Tesco meal deal worth of money a year. And as for monitoring my dishwasher usage, not sure how that helps other than being very dull. Does being dull save energy??
Yeah the real thing is that mostly the rich people can save more. By installing solar panels buying these fancy things. We are a family of 4 and after all the mandatory expenses done we left with £200 a week. That means we didn't buy any food or clothes or went anywhere. Also we have a top-up gas electricity. So, the smart meter is not working. Ohh and they don't change it to normal meters because we don't go through the credit check. Apperently at the previous house we had normal meters and we paid our bills always on time for 3 years.
You can save yourself a lot of money by doing the washing up yourself.
I agree replacing lamps with led's is a low cost solution for energy saving, but if money is limited secondary glazing of single glazed windows and draught exclusion can also make a huge difference to heating costs. Alongside this loft insulation can cut energy losses by at least 25% or more depending on the depth of insulation. These are diy solutions.
If you reduce all the all the obvious heat losses then turning down the thermostat on the heating system and servicing the boiler will bring more savings.
The most effective means of heating any building is underfloor heating because you are storing heat in the building structure, and thermostat controls can be lowered to 17/18⁰C

The main problem with far too many UK houses is that they are heat inefficient. Loft insulation should be the first area addressed - followed by eliminating draughts and wall insulation. Primary and Secondary double glazing will also help.

Use shrink rap and aluminium tin foil on plates saves washing them over and over again. 💯😎
My problem with smart meters is that too many people have reported them giving higher readings than was actually happening. Until they fix the accuracy I will stick with a traditional meter.
Bang on. The energy company will constantly mither you to have them fitted. I finally agreed to have my gas and electricity meters fitted last year. They didn't turn up on the day, nor did they pay me the non attendance fee of £30.
I didn't complain and they've never contacted me since then. I'm now glad I didn't have them fitted. I just give them a monthly manual reading and all is fine.
Smart meters use the same metering system as other modern digital meters, so you'd have to be using onld analog rotary meters... which are also known to go out of calibration.
Im currently going through the same..the certification on mine have both ended and they want me to fit a smart meter.. i will only accept if its in dumb mode buti wont know until he turns up to fit..if he says he cant fit in dumb mode then i wont allow them to fit it but im still in a pickle as i want to change both meters so they are accurate, iv seen some new traditional meters still for sale which i could get fitted by a qualified electrician but apparently i have to get permission from eon which is a lot harder then it sounds as most who pick up the phone are clueless or make it up as they go along so you don't know if what they are saying is accurate.

It's far more likely that the old mechanical meters were under-reporting the amount. Not unheard of for the disks to be running slow (or people tampering to make it run slower)

You said turn things off, next your in effect selling smart plugs. They will have as much, if not more draw than items items such as washing machines. Furthermore are you really recommending high draw appliances through smart plug? Haven’t there been issues with them overheating?

Also if you are considering fitting a smart thermostat and aren't confident doing it yourself then also get a price from a heating engineer (commonly known as a plumber). Chances are it will be cheaper than using an electrician.
They also (from my experience) are more reliable for actually turning up to small jobs like these.
Also check what electrical credentials the plumber has because the last plumber I had didn’t even know anything about plumbing, just saying.

The trouble is so many people are absolutely clueless, and the media doesn't help. On the news only the other day, there was a man saying he now couldn't afford to cook (even though prices have now come down), one startling fact he presented was that it cost him £5 to charge his electric wheel chair, which is impossible unless he had a 15kWh battery on his chair!!!!! In reality it probably cost less 50p, if that.

If you open a window now and again mould is not a problem. I’m definitely with the 15degree brigade. You’ll be amazed how quickly you get used to it.
you can get a certified electrician to take out the meter and inform the provider that you have done this and tell them to collect their property(meter) and you can install your own meter and get it direct from the grid.

If you are going to bypass a meter, at least do it safely:
1) Use a rated terminal (Henley block, or the meter itself)
2) Safely Isolate
3) When electricity goon comes round, tell him to do one as he can't do anything about it

If you don't understand the 'legalease' then don't risk it, but if you know what to say and when and too whom, bypassing the meter is as simple as just not paying
If you are caught bypassing the meter the DNO will cut the cable feeding the house then charge you for that plus the reconnection which will be a minimum of £4000
Electricity goons have a statutory right of entry to your home.
They have no right to enter the property, the most they can do is get an APPLICATION FOR a warrant. It is considered a civil matter so the police can't and usually won't get involved.
The most any DNO can do is remove the property from the phase but to do that they would have to disconnect the entire phase, something they usually won't do unless forced
Hi Jordan, since my first comment on one of your videos in the early summer we now have your bonus tips ie. 6kwh solar, Tesla battery and an EV. Although I thought I had done a lot of research on batteries I missed something really important about Tesla when fitted with solar and that is I can't charge the Powerwall from the grid during the low tariff periods as I can with my car via a Zappi using Octopus GO. As the install was only completed earlier this week it came as a bit of shock. You can charge a Powerwall without solar but not if you have both as the Powerwall only charges from the solar. So today I have 60% of battery power and despite it being a crap day just enough solar to run the house. If this weather persists the battery will drain and only then charge when there is sufficient solar when I could be filling it during the off peak😡😡 This never seems to get mentioned. Keep up the energy saving tips!!
Getting a tariff with lower costs overnight may be worth checking if you can move electricity use to the low-cost period. With the mixed-up energy markets, the use of an immersion heater at low-cost periods may also save money, it all depends on what rates you are being charged.
It is also very important to check exactly what time those low-cost tariffs switch on and off. Also check if they adjust for BST.
I had a load of smart plugs I was no longer using, only some had energy meters so I tested standby and in use energy of all appliances . Also have all lights av rack turn off at bedtime automatically and the office appliances at 7pm
Here’s how I cut my bills, if possible use an air fryer, slow cooker or microwave - massive savings compared to an oven, wash dishes by hand, turn down washing machine to 30deg, latest TV uses 100 watts less than old one, replaced my 20yr old failing Fridgefreezer. Oh and constantly nag kids to turn off their games consoles etc!
Washing dishes by hand is debatable. my machine does 16 placeholders with 9L of water and only .75kwh of power to heat/ pump. I'm not sure I'm saving much power over that used to heat water in tank and I'm definitely not saving water by hand washing. I'd need several washing up bowls to do the same amount (27L maybe).

@@alcurtis93 . Currently use about two bowls of water per day - about 12 litres, gas boiler uses a couple of pence worth of gas to heat that. Very few dishwashers use less than 1Kwh to do a cycle, a few modern ones and a few very expensive ones.
@@bordersw1239 A lot of modern machines can do sub 1kwh I would argue. My machine is a hisense C rated one that I got for £190 from AO outlet with a few dings in the side but they're usually around £400 admittedly. To do 12L of water a day (1.5 bowls of water including rinsing I take it?) Is .7kwh in power to raise the temp of 12L of water from 10c to 60c in your boiler (plus maybe 10% of that is lost due to efficiency). I can run mine every 2 or 3 days and wash unrinsed pots, pans, dishes, cutlery all for the same kWh and water usage (.75, 9L). You do then have to factor in 10p a time for the detergent but I'm happy doing that to not have to wash up and for the water savings as on meter plus not having to buy sponges or brushes etc). I run my machine off-peak so it only costs me 3p per load plus 10p for the tablet
Can't blame people for jumping meters it's nothing new, but it's gonna be far more frequent now... It's criminal what the energy unit cost is now.

I still live in the past and use good old manual switches screwed to the walls. No need for all these if you understand how to work them. Only one finger is needed. Ive replaced all bulbs for led a few years ago and beefed up my loft insulation including the hatch in the hall with some 50 to 75 mm thick foam insulation board. Made a huge difference just insulating..

Why does a spark have a socket under the sink so close to the water pipes?
This is going to happen on a big scale now people are being put under the pump. People who are desperate with no other way will of course seek alternatives in an unfair situation. I work on a large commercial site and trust me, in the canteen I am now overhearing many electricians talking about how they are being asked how to do this, or to atually do it for people. I think the video that you shared is insane and dangerous, and I am not in any way condoning this, but if the power companies and the government intend to make millions of people financially desperate, what exactly do they expect will be the result?
I turn off the radiators manually on and off, but it is getting a pain up the bum! A smart thermostatic valve is probably the answer. Thanks for making me aware of them.
14 SEER AC unit died, put in a 38 and a 21.5 SEER mini split. Electric went from $300-350 to $100-130 per month. Turns out ducted system can loose 40% from the ducts being in the attic. Made my 14 SEER effectively a 8.4 SEER. Cost of both mini split units was $4400. Average payback is less than two years.
What is a SEER? This is a uk channel, we dont measure anything in SEERs here.
@@stevecraft00 it stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Sort of like saying a 38 SEER AC moves 11.13 Watts of heat for every 1 Watt of electric used. However in the United States we measure in BTUs, so that one Watt of electric used moves 38 BTUs of heat. BTU stands for British thermal unit and (I am guessing) is not used by the British. In the United States we only use Watts for measuring electric Power. Everything else has a different unit of measurement. for the people that use EER, a 38 SEER = about 33.3 EER. For the people that use COP, 38 SEER = 11.13 COP. Sorry if that is confusing.
Ironic that the Americans use the British thermal unit but the British don't! 😂 Some stuff comes marked with btus but we default to watts, it's the easier unit to understand. Efficiency of heat pumps and air con is measured as COP here. So we'd say a unit that moves 4kw for every kW it consumed has a COP of 4.
Reduce you standby energy usage by installing loads of wifi enabled smart devices!!! Will that Tado smart socket really use less than a dishwasher turned off?
