PERSONAL STEAM FIX: I was running into a version of this problem. All computer audio played fine through headphones/external speakers until a game on Steam started, then the audio cut out to headphones/external speakers and immediately started playing through the laptop speakers (this happened with every Steam game I tried). What I found was that when plugging into my laptop's audio out jack Windows 10 gives me a prompt asking what I am plugging in. I actually chose the "headphones" option at first, which led to an evening of the problem I described. It was only after unplugging/replugging the cable back into the audio out jack and choosing ""external speakers" instead of "headphones" did ALL of the Steam games run fine through my headphones/external speakers. Again, not exactly the problem mentioned in the above video, but people might find this video while investigating the specific problem I encountered. I hope this helps someone.
