Little bear tried to follow mom's route, but he wasn't long enough to reach the next steps. So he 'remapped' the route in his brain, and took a different path, where he could reach the crevices to make it. That is intelligence.

Oh my goodness, thank you all for sharing the excitement of this moment with me. I enjoyed reading your commentary, and love that so many of you are nearly as moved by the experience as me. I have more photos and footage taken of the bears that day (all of which I left with Big Bend National Park), and some of which I may post here at some point. For those of you who didn't enjoy my commentary, please understand that I recorded this footage at about 200 to 300 feet from the bears, in a relatively narrow canyon, while alone, with no way out but a kayak on maybe 2 foot of water (which was between me and the bears), and the whole encounter was extremely intense for me. For those wondering about the height at which the bears were climbing above the canyon floor, I actually do have footage showing that, but it needs to be slowed down before sharing, as it was taken in too much of a hurry. I would just estimate that the bears were at 150 to 200 feet. They were high enough, that the ground and the bears were too much to fit on my screen at once at my distance. I can say that if they had fallen to the rocky crags, below real damage would have been done, probably to me and them. I don't know anything about rock climbing terms or lingo, so I cannot answer those questions. I am just so very glad and grateful to have lived the experience and survived to share it. Happy watching, and may you all have many merry and equally moving adventures of your own!

Well, the baby has a whole bunch of dangerous situations to get out of safely first, including constantly being on the radar of adult males. The first hurdle is infancy, but then many more are lost after the age of 18 months, when their mothers are ready to mate again and chase them away. Very few cubs make it to adulthood, and an alpha personality in and of itself isn’t going to save this one.

@chris smith Well you acted like there was no plausible situation where someone would have to escape a bear by running up a rock wall. Humans killing other humans to eat them would be humans hunting humans. There are situations where bears hunt humans. I never used the term man-eater to describe anything.

    • @christophersmith2470

@@almostskater3210 Let's recap to your original post of desperate bears hunt and eat humans. I will just respond in a different and more civil way. How is that? Even a desperate bear wouldn't hunt or eat a human. A deranged or sick bear would unknowingly eat anything. But, from a biological and scientific standpoint, no black bear would hunt or eat a human. Remember, we're talking about black bears. Polar bears are more prone to attack and possibly eat a human. But a black bear? There's nary a recorded case of a single human feasting in North America.

So, Mom goes up the stretch with a lot of flat surfaces and the few notches and holds present are not too far apart for an adult bear to utilize. Now, the cub reaches that stretch and says hell no, I'm going to my left where the rock is more fractured and the paw holds are more numerous and closer together. It's not so much that it knows the way up from there. It's that it knows that it's possible on that different looking surface. Incredible footage! Thanks for sharing.
