Aretha bought carpet from the company I worked for. I talked to her on the phone, and took a message from "Miss Franklin" for the boss. Growing up in Motown, Aretha was the queen and her voice flavored our lives in a big way. It's fun to think I've spoken to royalty!
@@ML-un1oi My boss had her address under conceal. I know it was in Blmfld Hls. I remember the original Wabeek farm, and when the house and barn burned down.
Fabulous Aretha- the clarity of her voice! Cliff Richard was England’s biggest pop star before the Beatles and the British music revolution in rock. Always enjoy your show!
Must see her live at 1st Baptist 1972 Amazing Grace. Sings so soulful that she almost collapses. I have the DVD. Makes my cry. Bernard Purdie on drums and Chuck Rainey on bass. Thanks men!
HAIL TO THE QUEEN!! As a 72 yr old southern Caucasian, IMO she’s the greatest female vocalist I’ve ever heard. PERIOD! I remember watching her sing live on TV in the late 60’s. My Dad was watching and afterwards he said: “ I don’t know who she is, but that woman can sing!!” As he got to hear more of her, she became one of his favorite singers regardless of sex. She was, is, and always be the Queen IMO. Check out her “owning” the song Natural Woman (written by Carole King).
I like her early work but then she got away from Soul and I felt those later songs were mediocre. No reflection on her singing abilities. I feel the same way about Tina Turner. She was great when singing the Blues with Ike. Later on, not so much for my taste.
Aretha is the GWOAT!! I said that Carly Simon voice gives me goosebumps. Aretha voice gives goosebumps and makes the hair on my arms stand up. Fellas now you are cooking with greese. I am always down to more Aretha. Thanks fellas for the excellent reaction!!
Thank goodness this precious footage survived for us to re-enjoy today. It's a remarkable performance. Simply wonderful and very treasured. What a fantastic example of what Aretha did best.
Hey, y'all, check out Aretha's version of "The Weight," backed by Duane Allman. Also, please don't overlook Leon Russell on piano. He played on so many hit songs, it'll blow your mind. He was also a world-class songwriter ("A Song for You," "This Masquerade," "Back to the Island," "Tightrope," "Crystal Closet Queen" (written for Little Richard).
Aretha’s singing is soooo much more than her spectacular vocal instrument - every ounce of her is channeled through her singing. Try turning the sound down and watch - I feel I can “hear” her through eyes and the energy in her face and body. She’s just so present. Her playing is also so integral.
Aretha's father was the most famous preacher in Detroit in the 1960's. She grew up singing and playing the piano. Everybody in Detroit knew about her before she started making records. BTW. Women wore slacks (pants) all the way back to the 1940's. I'm an OG from Detroit living in New York
My favorite!!! Mom’s vinyl of Aretha’s Greatest Hits was the first time I heard that song and I still love it better than all the others. I think it’s because she plays the riff AND sings it so soulfully ❤❤. When I got the same album on CD, this song just stayed on repeat 🔁 🎉
Thank you for not interrupting the video to comment! Her genius is overwhelming. Honestly, the talent level is far above even the best videos you guys review.
God rest her soul. She was incredible. She covered for Povrotti(sorry, I'm wrecking the spelling of the famous Italian opera singer) Two weeks notice, and had to learn the whole show in Italian. Super human. I'm sure you can still find it on TH-cam. It was probably 20yrs ago now.
To be able to sing and play the piano like that is amazing. James Cleveland worked with Ms. Franklin when she was a child and her mother played the piano it was in her DNA.
So thrilled you reacted to this. One of my favourite Aretha songs and performances. Scary talent. I mean actually scary. She's the greatest. She just is. A lot of people think about Aretha in her later years as a larger than life woman who was a big character, but you go back to her 60s and 70s albums and live performances and it's just on a different level. So much soul, so much musicality. Bringing the church into your front room. Love, love, love my Aretha.
Aretha and Stevie, the MOST inspiring voices in music, period. oh and, ELVIS COSTELLO. WATCHING THE DETECTIVES. FROM THE ALBUM "MY AIM IS TRUE". GAME CHANGER.
Aretha's voice in its prime. All the female singers after her pale in comparison, even though some are very good. Aretha set a standard that hasn't been touched to this day. I saw her in person in the 1970s and she brought the house down. Thanks for showing her with her vocal powers at its peak.
Wow, this was mind blowingly fantastic. I know many of her songs and have seen many of these videos, but haven't seen this one with her playing piano. What a singular talent she was.
One of my favorite movie scenes of all time in The Blies Brothers where she and Matt "guitar" Murphy run a greasy spoon dinner and as the brothers are taking Matt with them, she is singing Respect.
She recorded at muscle Shoals recording studios, using the house band the swampers, who were all white, which should surprise most people because I always figure she was from Motown. Lynyrd Skynyrd mentioned the swampers in their song Sweet Home Alabama. They won many Grammys, including some with her.
This song has been covered by SOOOO many artist. This one is great! That being said, my favorite is by R.B. Greaves he just imbues it with so much pathos.
1970 when I first heard this aged sixteen. Growing up in the north west of England having no connection whatsoever with "black" music I was surprisingly and immediately hooked by her voice and love it to this day 👍🇬🇧
This was Aretha's latest UK release when she appeared on the top rating Cliff Richard show. Thankfully the producers of the show sat her at the piano. This live version maybe better than the studio version. It was originally a US hit for Ben E. King in 1962. Ben and Aretha!! Two great voices. If I was this song I'd be flattered.
In Smokey Robinson's autobiography he tells of the first time he met Aretha Franklin when he was a kid. Many of the future Motown stars, like himself, lived in a 6 to 8 block area in Detroit, which was also the home of the Rev. C. L. Franklin, a very famous Baptist minister and civil rights activist of the day, who just happened to be Aretha's father. Smokey spoke of going into the parlour of the Franklin home and seeing a 3 or 4 year old little girl, (Aretha), playing away on the piano and singing WELL. So, Chi, I'm guessing that you're absolutely right about her informal, church-foundation piano training. And nobody STILL "takes us to church" quite like Sista 'Re. 💕
Woah. Didn’t realize until the end that I forgot to look at your reaction. Guess I’ll have to watch it again. 😂 Never seen this video before. Captivating.
Aretha is absolutely one of the greatest soul singers. and she's good on that piano too. Check out Aretha Franklin Live at the Fillmore. Absolutely unbelievable.
Maybe my all-time favorite double-sided hit record is Aretha's "Since You've Been Gone" b/w "Ain't No Way" (1968). These songs will give you chills. "Ain't No Way" has been covered by many artists including Jennifer Hudson but Aretha's version is on my Top Twenty All-Time Favorite Songs list.
Aretha voice is like home...it always takes me there! There is a version of The Weight by THE BAND that she does with Duane Allman and you have no idea how much you to hear it. Great pick
I’ve heard that Aretha was a child prodigy at the piano and if I’m not mistaken, she actually studied opera. She stood in at the Grammy’s for her good friend, Luciano Pavarotti when he suddenly fell ill and sang Nessun Dorma beautifully.
I think she could pick up a newspaper and sing out the front page copy and it would be amazing. Such talent. My favorite from her is “Until You Come Back To Me”
WOW‼️😃 Never heard this before, & damn sure never knew Miss Aretha could play the piano 🎹 ❗️ Thanks Guys!!! (the looks on your faces was priceless.. thinkin mine was the same! 😲)
Aretha bought carpet from the company I worked for. I talked to her on the phone, and took a message from "Miss Franklin" for the boss. Growing up in Motown, Aretha was the queen and her voice flavored our lives in a big way. It's fun to think I've spoken to royalty!
Was she living in Wabeek at the time? I am also, from Motown .
@@ML-un1oi My boss had her address under conceal. I know it was in Blmfld Hls. I remember the original Wabeek farm, and when the house and barn burned down.
She also had a house on Echo rd. In Bloomfield twp. Which burned
Fabulous Aretha- the clarity of her voice!
Cliff Richard was England’s biggest pop star before the Beatles and the British music revolution in rock.
Always enjoy your show!
Always a pleasure to hear from you!!
I’ll admit it now - was a revival mod, 79ish, but I loved cliff’s wired for sound 😎
Must see her live at 1st Baptist 1972 Amazing Grace. Sings so soulful that she almost collapses. I have the DVD. Makes my cry.
Bernard Purdie on drums and Chuck Rainey on bass.
Thanks men!
Right on!
HAIL TO THE QUEEN!! As a 72 yr old southern Caucasian, IMO she’s the greatest female vocalist I’ve ever heard. PERIOD!

I wasn't necessary to mention your race, you just know great music😊
My race is human; my ethnicity is Caucasian.
She’s the Queen!! Simply amazing ❤️

Her voice has got it all and she is just the absolute best.
R.I.P. Aretha Franklin Queen of Soul..
Not only was she a fantastic singer, but also a great piano player!
More Aretha please and thank you 😊 Love y'all!
Hey, y'all, check out Aretha's version of "The Weight," backed by Duane Allman. Also, please don't overlook Leon Russell on piano. He played on so many hit songs, it'll blow your mind. So many great singers out there but nobody can touch Aretha!!!!
Aretha was, is & ever will be the Queen, what a voice! ♥️
The one and only QUEEN of Soul Ms Aretha Franklin ❤️
One of the great performances of all time. Cliff Richard is huge in the UK & had a hit in the US w Devil Woman.
Aretha’s singing is soooo much more than her spectacular vocal instrument - every ounce of her is channeled through her singing. Try turning the sound down and watch - I feel I can “hear” her through eyes and the energy in her face and body. She’s just so present. Her playing is also so integral.
People don't talk enough about the expression of emotion when it comes to singing and playing an instrument.
Aretha's father was the most famous preacher in Detroit in the 1960's. She grew up singing and playing the piano. Everybody in Detroit knew about her before she started making records. BTW. Women wore slacks (pants) all the way back to the 1940's. I'm an OG from Detroit living in New York

Peep the backup singer in the black pantsuit. That's Cissy Houston, Whitney's mom.

The Queen. The GOAT. The legend. I must have watched this literally hundreds of times.
To be able to sing and play the piano like that is amazing. James Cleveland worked with Ms. Franklin when she was a child and her mother played the piano it was in her DNA.
Aretha. The best singer to ever walk this planet.
So thrilled you reacted to this. One of my favourite Aretha songs and performances. Scary talent. I mean actually scary. She's the greatest. She just is. Aretha and Stevie, the MOST inspiring voices in music, period. oh and, ELVIS COSTELLO. WATCHING THE DETECTIVES. FROM THE ALBUM "MY AIM IS TRUE". GAME CHANGER.
I was fortunate enough to see Aretha Franklin in 1965 and Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1968...right place, right time...
Growing up with the giants of yesterday was mighty rich.
Aretha's voice in its prime. All the female singers after her pale in comparison, even though some are very good. Aretha set a standard that hasn't been touched to this day. I saw her in person in the 1970s and she brought the house down. Thanks for showing her with her vocal powers at its peak.

Aretha's father was a famous minister. The TV Show was in the UK. I'm so glad your mom will enjoy this.
Love, love, love Aretha! Thank you!
One of the greatest musical artists of the 20th century.
One of my favorite movie scenes of all time in The Blies Brothers where she and Matt "guitar" Murphy run a greasy spoon dinner and as the brothers are taking Matt with them, she is singing Respect.
Carly and Aretha on the same day! Dang. Way to go Laa! Way to go Chee!

Lynyrd Skynyrd mentioned the swampers in their song Sweet Home Alabama. They won many Grammys, including some with her.
This is beautiful. Never heard it and super glad I did. Thank you for keeping music alive in this way. For real. ❤❤❤
This song has been covered by SOOOO many artist. This one is great! That being said, my favorite is by R.B. Greaves he just imbues it with so much pathos.
Simply the best!!!!! Aretha was so talented and was loved by all!!!!!!!!
She is the standard by which all others should be measured.
Blown away by her banging the keys! ❤❤
Whoa, big yes for all the Aretha music! Love her! 🔥
There will never be another Aretha. I haven’t heard it before, that was beautiful thank you both.
My parents used to play this all time back In day. Tx for the memories fellas!
🫡 legendary ❤woman/voice
A talent beyond comprehension! ❤❤❤❤🇬🇧
That was a British TV show, Cliff was a singer and he had a Saturday night TV show on BBC.
1970 when I first heard this aged sixteen. Growing up in the north west of England having no connection whatsoever with "black" music I was surprisingly and immediately hooked by her voice and love it to this day 👍🇬🇧
The Queen of Soul !!!! Enough Said

Mavis Staples comes close.
There are deep gospel roots in this song, miss Aretha brought it that day
The Queen!
The Queen and Sir Cliff are from different sets of nobility.
Woah. Didn’t realize until the end that I forgot to look at your reaction. Guess I’ll have to watch it again. 😂
Never seen this video before. Captivating.
Smokey Robinson used to see Aretha singing and playing in church in Detroit when she was young, and he said she played 'complex church chords.'
🙌🙌🙌🙌The greatest to ever do it.
Aretha Franklin
Chaka Khan. Then.........
Whitney Houston
Aretha such a natural.
Aretha is absolutely one of the greatest soul singers. and she's good on that piano too. Check out Aretha Franklin Live at the Fillmore. Absolutely unbelievable.
I've never seen you guys so mesmerized.
And I do believe one of those backup singers is her cousin Cissy Houston, a/k/a Whitney's mother. Royalty.
Some songs and artists are just beyond awesome, here we have such an example
Gifted! That was amazing. Rock on.
I feel very lucky that I grew up in a time where we had great Motown and rock and roll
Yeah. Wow. Just wow.
1970 she was in her prime ! Check Untill You come back to Me, 1974, same piano and vibe ! Oh you already did !
This is an absolutely gorgeous and lively performance, and Aretha makes it look so effortless!!
WE have all of Aretha's records and I have been listen to her since 1967
Very cool. Didn't know she played piano. ❤
Never knew she could play piano.. vocals are incredible ❤
The GOAT.
Leaves me speechless lol thanks for playing this one!
I don't think I've ever seen you two so enthralled
You can’t believe how often she was on tv ,captivating the nation ☮️
Maybe my all-time favorite double-sided hit record is Aretha's "Since You've Been Gone" b/w "Ain't No Way" (1968). These songs will give you chills. "Ain't No Way" has been covered by many artists including Jennifer Hudson but Aretha's version is on my Top Twenty All-Time Favorite Songs list.
Proper music.❤
I am also going to send this to my mom immediately, her favorite artist as well, I've never heard this before or seen this...thank you.
Aretha voice is like home...it always takes me there! There is a version of The Weight by THE BAND that she does with Duane Allman and you have no idea how much you to hear it. Great pick
Those gospel roots. Mesmerizing. If you want to feel good, listen to this.
Ahh brought out the ladies today!!🎼🎵
Ive never seen this performance
That was amazing
Never heard of that show either
I’ve heard that Aretha was a child prodigy at the piano and if I’m not mistaken, she actually studied opera. She stood in at the Grammy’s for her good friend, Luciano Pavarotti when he suddenly fell ill and sang Nessun Dorma beautifully.
Damn that’s a soulful woman…love her music and message!
2:46 when you looked at your brother like.. you hear that piano hehe. Man i love her playing also
The Queen of soul legend
I'm a grown ass man and she can reduce me to tears. Or maybe it's those backing singers.
never have seen this, and will be watching it often. thank you 🙂
Can You Imagine going to Her Daddies Church here in Detroit with Aretha and Her Sister Erma Singing ?
Pure talent
I bought a Best Of Aretha CD from Rhino Records in Quadrophonic. Unreal.
I like all those old talk shows...the band plays live and out of sight! Jimmy Fallon carries on the tradition with The Roots!!!!!
I think she could pick up a newspaper and sing out the front page copy and it would be amazing. Such talent. My favorite from her is “Until You Come Back To Me”
Never heard this but, it was fabulous !!
no one like her! Even her piano playing hits your soul.
WOW‼️😃
Never heard this before, & damn sure never knew Miss Aretha could play the piano 🎹 ❗️
Thanks Guys!!!
(the looks on your faces was priceless.. thinkin mine was the same! 😲)
I think Aretha always sounds better when she’s playing the piano. 🕊❤️🎼
Noone sings like Aretha.
Bout time you got to the QUEEN!
Sensational. !
Go back and watch your own reaction to hearing this legend perform… precious!
