This week’s film breakdown analyzes Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s battle on Sunday Night Football which featured the New England Patriots and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in “The Return." Brady and Belichick obviously have a storied history, 20 years together to be exact, so the anticipation for this game was monumental. Belichick knew all of Brady’s weaknesses, so how did he try to exploit them with his game plan? This episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Tom Brady and Bill Belichick going head to head.

How big do you think the weather was? Brate, Godwin and AB had a lot of drops on surefire passes, especially in the first half and late second when the rain was at its worst. Those drops heavily impacted Bradys stats as for instance, the Bucs had 2 TD's dropped. This video only cover scheme but I think a big part of passing issues that game was simply weather

Amazing episode. Great how you illustrated the mental part of the game - especially as that is Brady's primary strength - and how that played out between two of the smartest people to ever play the game. This will definitely be an episode I come back to while continuing to evaluate Brady in the last chapter of his career.
Also, Brady throwing over the middle without hesitation in the latter half of the game after a few quarters of midfield clutter was a great example of how impressive he is. Debate his GOAT-ness or not, you said it. That's what comes with 21 years of experience, and being one of the smartest and most poised minds in football. Really good stuff.

  • @ClavisRa
    @ClavisRa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +76

If Brown catches either of those perfect TD passes back-to-back from Brady, he's over 300 yds passing and the game is out of reach. Belichick really had a perfect game plan, and the Pats D executed it brilliantly, and yet.. Brady was ready for everything. This game felt like steel on steel each sharpening the other. This Pats D is going to be stifling the second half of the season and Brady is fine-tuning his Bucs offense just like last year, to be a well-oiled machine. I'm dreaming of them meeting again in the Superbowl.

Yes, in many ways it was not as close as the final score. TB had a ton more yards, but they really struggled in the red zone.
I do think this game and its meaning was very draining for Brady. Bill had a great defense, but Brady was also not really on top of his emotions. I think if they were to meet again the game might be a lot less close. But of course that is not going to happen.

Belichick always focuses on what his team does well and schemes it to take away what your team does best. It’s a basic philosophy that is much harder executed than said but it remains the same always. Because of the constant nickel and dime coverages the Bucs were given they were destined to be forced to run the ball and when they did so they did it well. If they would have ran more they would have not only won as they did but much more decisively I believe.

I truly think that both of them were great. There’s only so much you can plan off field. Ultimately, it’s the players who execute. TB12 being on the field allowed Bucs to have a chance. If only belichik could play like this every game and his offense can score points, they might have a chance. If not, then sorry.
I believe TB12 came prepared and adapted to the defense that’s was designed with him in mind, he managed to dig deep and figure out something on the go. This in itself is hallmark of a great player. It’s the littlest difference that’s makes the top 0.1% differentiate themselves.

Because there was no rain and thus a low score game.
    -1 yard in rushing...abysmally bad.
Secure shot passes in order to exploit the secondary of the Bucs - very creative.

I really wish that the weather had been perfect, both coaches said that the weather did not affect their team's play but we all know that it did. A wet football is not as easy to grip or to catch, their footing is also compromised both when trying to plant and when trying to cut, it can limit their vision (to a slight degree), and even tackling gets affected. If ever there was a game where I wish the weather had been perfect it was this game and I am a DIE HARD VIKINGS FAN. But I am also a huge fan of both Brady and Bill.

Belichick did a great job but he also had the weather in his favor which limited the Bucs passing game and efficiency. As someone else stated if a cpl of those balls that hit the recievers right in the hands/bread basket Bradys stats could have easily reflected over 300yds and at least 1, maybe 2, TDs. Idt this game is as close on a neutral field or in TB but idk the Pats are looking like there old championship selfs again. Both the Pats/TB are looking to get the #1 seed in their respective conferences and im sure most ppl are rooting for a Pats/Bucs SB. We'll see.

Covering the receivers for QB that mainly passes is the obvious strategy and it worked. Against the Dolphins Brady had to throw deep passes to break the pattern read and defeated by the Pats. Brady was successful at this because of his terrific receivers.

Even though the Pat lost and the Rams won against the Bucc, I thought the Rams won despite being sliced up by Brady, while the Pat lost despite limiting the Buccs offence. It's very clear to me that the Rams played defence the same way they play offence, relying on personal brilliance to beat opposing teams rather than solid scheme. Their defence still rely on Aaron Donald ability to draw offensive tacklers, opening up gaps and pressuring the offence to make mistake. Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsay control the corner and limiting yards after pass, reading opposing receivers. When these 2 are out of the equation, either from having a bad day, or the opposing personnel are better, or simply better having scheme that plays around them, the Rams are incapable of stopping anybody. The games they played against decent offences, they let the Seahawks scored 2, Colts, Bucc scored 3, Cards 4, despite having 2 of the, if not the best defensive players in the league. They have a hard time playing against the runs, incapable of stopping passing to the seem, slant. If it weren't for their opponent defence being much more inferior to their own, personnel wise, they would have lost the rest of the 3 games.
On the other hand, the Pats are losing despite playing pretty decently on the defence, because their offence is too unstable. It speaks volume to balance. The Rams is winning despite not having the best schemes, because they have many stars on the field. No matter how good and experience coaches are, the amount of thing they can do is very limited. They can only empower good players to become winners, they can't make average players beat superior opponents.

belichick's secondary is good at playing man coverage consistently and more importantly disguise coverage. Other than that, Brady saw them coming pre and post snaps. I'ma say this though that belichick's biggest weakness is a mobile quarterback not afraid to put the ball in tight windows.

I can only imagine how badly Brady wanted to crush his former team to show it was also him & not Grumpy's "genius" that the Pats won so much. I rather enjoyed watch Brady struggle to produce such below average stats.
Then again, if Grumpy's staff is so smart, how come they can't beat the lowly Dolphins?

Ahhh, no. Bucs receivers dropping balls was Brady's limitation. Maybe it was the rain. Those 5 drops equaled the Bucs drops for four other games. Catching those would have given Brady about 330 yards passing. AB dropped one TD pass and completely lost another TD pass in the lights, otherwise the Pats aren't even getting a long FG shot to try to win it.
