  • This student has a high GPA and didn't do any clinical work in undergrad. Does he need to "catch up"?

this is my personal experience with Hunter premed office. I approached them 10 years ago and the counselor was just very discouraging. I doubted myself for several years due to that encounter. Hearing about this 514 requirement for their committee letter is just ridiculous. I'm glad I stayed away from their office.

"My premed advisor didn't emphasize the importance of shadowing"... I mean, sure it doesn't help, but you gotta show initiave and do your own research as well, everything isn't gonna be spoon-fed to you

At the same time, though, counselors should be better at guiding students into premed. Freshmen are only 18, still babies!! Not everyone knows just how many things need to be done, and so they look towards elders for guidance

my alma mater requires a "competitive" GPA and MCAT score for a committee letter too. I got denied the first time, so didn't bother requesting another after my stats improved. still not sure I'd meet their standards, but I realized I didn't need one after all. I'm much happier with my individual letters than I would have been with a committee letter.

Not Hunter College being called out lmaoaoao. That’s my school, and yes, it is a BIG red flag.

Hey Dr. Gray. I often hear that med schools don't care about experience in high school, but I have over 100 clinical hours from vocational school during senior year of high school. I recently did a speaker event at the school, but I want to know if I should include that clinical experience in my application. Thank you!

I feel you on that! I have so many clinical and shadowing hours from high school. I was in a healthcare program/internship for a year that exposed students interested in medicine to shadow and get hands on experience with patients.

@@jessicarivera4302 yeah same! I was in a program like that too. It's very hard for me to leave all that out just because it was in high school, especially when those experiences helped me know I wanted to be a doctor.

@@vlogsbyfy4038 Was it called ROP? It was the "watering of the seed" for me but since we can't put those hours in our activities I think its best to really speak on it in our personal statement since it's part of why we want to go into medicine. I did so much hands-on stuff in that program at the hospital that we couldn't even do now in hospitals without being certified and it sucks!

You are correct, they don’t want to hear what you did in High School.

Can I start shadowing the summer before I start premed? Will I be able to put it in my resume when I apply for med school?

You can include it if it is after high school graduation. -M
