Retention editing isn't a trend but simply a different niche of editing that has it's own audience made for a particular genre, just like minimalist editing. Notice how every video shown here are just talking heads and nothing similar to the example he showed having retention editing?

As someone just starting out on their channel this is a breath of fresh air. I've been at it only a few months, but the absolute worst part of the entire process is editing videos. I can come up with topics, write scripts, film, etc, but I am not only slow at editing, but not very good either and tbh it's slowed down my entire channel as a bottleneck.

Congrats on starting! It’s so interesting to hear the different perspectives.
I personally love editing, but wish I was more skilled. I knew nothing about editing on Adobe Premiere and taught myself a considerable amount of beginner level skills and loved it. Love the process. It has an element of story curation / customization that I enjoyed.
For me, it’s my relatively novice skill set that makes me not enjoy the process as much as I could. Looking back, I wish I studied it (under some form of design, media and visual arts degree) in undergrad.
Not that I can’t continue to learn it at a higher level now. Certainly there are a lot of certifications out there, and of course self learning is always available, but I just wish I started sooner when I had a TON more time than I do now. By now I would’ve been very advanced.
The quest continues! I am, however, very happy to see this video, and to be assured that people still appreciate more of the mellow video production formats because as someone who edits her own videos (I manage other channels) I definitely don’t have time to incorporate the more sophisticated edits especially as someone who is not yet a fast editor. I’m also not quite financially ready for a full time editor or contract editing services, so simplicity is where I’ll be staying for a while as I edit my own videos.

I have noticed this style-and that I’m more drawn to it. I’m 40, so if someone has 5 edits in under 10 seconds I’m usually out. Unless the edits are dropping DIMES-but that is a totally different style and skill set.
But I came across a video by Charlie Morgan, a 22 year old making upwards of a million dollars. Sounds familiar right?
But his video was him sitting in front of a white board breaking down exactly why no one in his audience can sit for longer than 12 seconds before they are reaching for their phone.
And because of that inability for focus-they’re at a disadvantage in business. Man the amount of information he packed into one hour-both displaying the skill of focus and while breaking down the components of it was amazing. It was a demonstration and master class at the same time-and it could only be done without editing.
It was my first video with him. Instant follow. And his comment section full of comments on the power of his videos without editing.
How to focus 12 hours a day like a millionaire-is the title if you’re curious.
Great video you have here Helmi, you are on to something.

As a creative agency, I know retention based editing doesn't simply means putting too much effects, the videos to which the particular audience align to become a retention based videos. Effects play a crucial role but what sets a good video apart from a too much edited video is the use of effects at part of explanation which needs narration. For audiences who look for entertainment only, they will need too much effects to grab their audience.
A paying audience generally doesn't need high end editing but it definitely needs motion work in the videos. After all it depends on the value you provide in your videos. The key factor is to understand your audience needs. In my years of working I have also seen channels putting high quality edited videos but audience's response were not so great.

I've been in professional video production for going on 34 years now (so well before there was a TH-cam, or even digital video), and I must say, I've gotten so sick of all these fads and trends, and that's all they are. Anyone remember when morphing was all the rage? Now who's doing it? Content is king. Just tell a good story, show something interesting, and if it's something people are interested in, or need to know about, they'll watch. If you do use effects, transitions, etc., use them sparingly, like salt or spice in your recipe, but don't choke people to death with them. And they should support the content, not work against it.

Have to agree! When I decided to start YT, I was disappointed and confused with all the YT info channels advice of "If it's not fast paced it won't succeed". Editing should be used in a way that conveys the story you are trying to tell, even if the story is yourself. Yes I have heavily edited some parts if vids, but that is to either emphasize certain parts or I'm just having some fun with a skit or joke. I decided when I started to be myself and not chase the numbers! I am glad to see the fast paced trend starting to wind down.

Retention style editing will be around, but I suspect it will evolve in its own way over time along with the "catching up with your café friend" type of vibe. I took some inspiration from creators such as Dan Koe, Sam Sulek, and Jordan Howlett to create my own TH-cam channel focusing on answering existential questions in my life to help provide value to others. Here are some interesting aspects that I have tried to incorporate into my own channel:
Dan Koe: Granular profile picture and thumbnails for his editing videos
Sam Sulek: Very low editing style but longer form content
Jordan Howlett: Simply recording all your content on your phone
I consume so much content on TH-cam anyway, I figured what the heck may as well as create some content to put out some value into the world. I just started but I am super excited to hear about this incorporation of personality more into TH-cam channels going forward in 2024.

You made some really great points here. I make guitar videos, and I can relate because I have been thinking for a while if I should let go of making long form videos, which I've been focusing on and instead make those flashy shorts - edited to get high repeatability from the viewers and therefore get more subscribers faster, the trend these days, which I know if I follow certain formulas, I will be able to do better in terms of looking at it from that angle.
Then I paused... and asked myself what do I - myself, like to watch and listen to. And I realized that I don't like to watch shorts, and I'm 38, I too can't stand those flashy attention grabbing soundbites. I mean sometimes I found a few shorts really amusing and some are kinda fun, but I don't gravitate towards shorts at all..
I think I have to be honest with myself and be careful not to lose the very reason why I play music for the sake of grabbing those very young audience with short attention span, and as a result of that gradually losing my passion.
Thanks, you just helped me to confirm that I should stay on my track, and just use a few shorts to supplement the main long form videos..

A video and hearing "This video is sponsored by Squarepace" on top of that what the person is talking about is an ad itself for a paid product placement too. That's not even including the ads BEFORE watching the video if you don't pay for Premium. It's exhausting. This is why I love the "smaller" channels like this. They talk real stuff. It's genuine.

I agree on incorpirating more and more personality into the videos. Because it's really easy to distract/ hide the viewers perception from the youtuber's real personality with alot of editing. But I don't fully agree on too simple editing, if you're a person that likes filmmaking and editing. I think Colt Kirwan is a perfect example of mixing his personality with his creative editing/ filmmaking.

This definitely worked for me and my channel. My first video that I uploaded was gaming/education niche, however, it was at a much slower pace and more reminiscent of older TH-cam commentary-type videos and it ended up getting 25k+ views. I also noticed that a lot of viewers really enjoyed that slower pace 'old youtube' vibe. good luck on your channels everyone!

Thank you so much for this video - it found me at exactly the right moment. I make TH-cam videos in a similar spirit as someone like Jonna Jinton and a bit like Lynette. My pace and style has always been slower and more cinematic story telling and editing but have always felt the pressure to do something more in line with the fast paced styles that are so popular and recommended for higher retention rates. Thank you for all these reminders that prioritise alignment and authenticity! 💛

Thank you for starting this conversation.
All producers need to be focused on the purpose of their video. I've watched a lot of videos on TH-cam and most of them are, frankly, junk. The reason for this is precisely because their PURPOSE is to build a bigger audience and become a "successful" creator on TH-cam. And it shows in the video.
If you do succeed in this goal you will, perhaps, make some money. I wouldn't know much about that. The real question to me is: Who are you making money for? TH-cam is, or should be, a platform for ideas. Once you start counting clicks and watching retention time you will be working for TH-cam, rather than for positive social change.
If your purpose is to change minds, build a better society, or to save our civilization, then you need to focus on those goals, not TH-cam's. In the end TH-cam will do better as well.
Just keep in mind that many folks are put off by over-edited videos. (Note: This video is filled with fast, jarring jump-cut edits which leave no space for any of your thoughts to "land" for the viewer. I don't think you even inhaled once during your rant.)
What TH-cam really needs is some videos that teach "creators" how to define their purpose and to focus their efforts on creating the change they want to see in the world. We don't need hints on how to keep people mesmerized in front of the screen watching ads. If we can't do better than that then TH-cam will continue to sink into the morass of video platforms built by the entertainment profiteers who now dominate the world of video.
    Just a thought.
