Definitely the most heart-pounding, suspenseful sequence in the whole film. As a kid, I whispered to myself, "This is it... If he dies, the story is over." The ultimate test of self-worth, courage and confidence. The music adds only too well to the whole chilling scene.
This movie was an emotional Roller Coaster of incredible highs and lows. This was an incredible high with the old mans utter joy when he made it past the gate.
This scene had a huge effect on me when I was a kid. Like probably helped shape who I was in some way. The image of those statues still hits me in a way I can physically feel.
I saw the original movie of The Neverending Story in third grade, and to this day, it's one of my favorite movies. 👍 In my opinion, this was the most intriguing scene of the movie. It teaches a lesson about confidence. Whether or not the Sphinxes could see "straight into your heart" as Engywook warned, it was a dangerous test to walk between them. The test wasn't just about Atreyu being confident and calmly walking through to pass the test. When Atreyu first approached the Sphinxes, he looked scared, and when he saw the dead knight and his charred face, he was terrified. In order to pass, had to quickly change from being terrified, to be confident, run and JUMP out of the way at the right time. Look at Atreyu's face when Bastian yells "RUN NOW!" and you will see the determination and confidence in his face. This movie has helped me in life to not doubt myself, and be more confident. 🙂
This scene stuck with me. I was born in 1996, but this movie was a huge part of my childhood. The build up, the intense music as atreyu aproaches the spynx. Bold for a childrens movie at the time..yet greatly executed.
Where did the knight come from and why was he trying to get to the southern oracle? Also he appeared out of nowhere and we don’t see him riding to the sphinx gate when they reach to the telescope.
Mr.furley6153..... I like the way you think sir lol.... as I was writing this comment for you I realized why they don't go around the statues.... just saw the clip of Atreyu looking at the hugeeee boobies of the statues....THATS WHY THEY DONT GO AROUND...😂😂😂
Another warrior like Atreyu sent out on a similar quest to find a solution to The Nothing much like how the Rockbiter and his friends were sent by their respective peoples to the Ivory Tower to seek help from the Empress.
Stylistically, this is my favorite scene from the movie. They seemed much taller back when I was a kid... majestic and divine.

I know. This scene used to scare me so much especially when the knight's helmet blows open and you see the charred remains of his face.

3:02-3:16 I love how it zooms into Atreyu's face, and you see his expression slowly change from fear to determination.
6:07 I've always imagined that Atreyu heard Bastian 'cause he ran just after Bastian said "Run now!"
Is the best movie of this years 👍👍👍✨✨✨
I loved this movie as a kid. This was my favorite scene. 💕
He made it! HE MADE IT!

Absolutely👏👍✨!
I've watched it in 1985 when I was a teen. Watched it over and over. Drove my granny crazy.
Great scene. This is what modern movies fail to capture - tension and impending danger. The Sphinx were intimidating without doing a thing
3:35 this score is just so amazing!
why are the comments disabled for this scene everywhere else?
This movie is considered a kids movie and children's content on TH-cam automatically have comments removed

I wonder why the horse doesn't die too from the bolts
Magic. The blast was only meant for the rider.
Horse knew his self worth, my man didn't doubt himself.

5:31 They literally turned bro into sizzling bacon 😬!
My favorite scene in the movie
Me at 12: who cares if he falls out of the basket
Me at 41: bro, dont fall out of the basket like that

You could simply walk around those tall stone walls.... And get to the other side

Knight Standards; 2:33 Before, 5:31 After.
The knight...who WAS that guy?
I like that they give no context for him. Can't explain why, but it seems to drive the point of the gate better
