    In the book Artax has emotions and feelings like humans. He can talk and has this convo with Atreyu: "I don't know, master. I think we should turn back. There's no sense in all this. We're chasing after something you only dreamed about. We won't find anything. Maybe it's too late even now. Maybe the Childlike Empress is already dead, and everything we're doing is useless. Let us turn back, master...With every step we take the sadness grows in my heart. I've lost hope. I feel so heavy, so heavy."

      it's sadder in the book too, he can speak, and he knows he's going to die, but try as he might he can't fight the sadness. he tells atreyu to let go so that he won't drown too...and then very gently tells him to look away so the boy won't have to watch his friend die.

    This shows the relationship between someone depressed and someone who cares. Artax has been acting normal despite the strain until he can't anymore. It takes Atreyu by surprise because he's coping better, but he tries to adjust and be accommodating. Atreyu finally understands how serious the situation is and reacts with the natural fear that his friend is in danger. He shows his panic that his friend needs help, not knowing what to do other than tell him to fight. He doesn't understand that the nature of depression is losing the will the fight. In his fear, he resorts to anger, then begging and pleading 'for me'. But he doesn't understand that sadness makes you so hopeless that you can't believe that people care about you, or even if they did, the world is too painful to keep going. This perfectly shows what it's like when two people in the same situation have different reactions and different abilities to cope. Atreyu is desperate to help, but can't. The scene after Artax dies is brief, but it shows how the person left behind has such a hard time coping with a loved one's suicide.

    From the book…
    Desperately Atreyu pulled at the bridle, but the horse sank deeper and deeper. When only his head emerged from the black water, Atreyu took it in his arms.
    “I’ll hold you, Artax,” he whispered. “I won’t let you go under.”
    The little horse uttered one last soft neigh.
    “You can’t help me, master. It’s all over for me. Neither of us knew what we were getting into. Now we know why they are called the Swamps of Sadness. It’s the sadness that has made me so heavy. That’s why I’m sinking. There’s no help.”
    “But I’m here, too,” said Atreyu, “and I don’t feel anything.”
    “You’re wearing the Gem, master,” said Artax. “It protects you.”
    “Then I’ll hang it around your neck!” Atreyu cried. “Maybe it will protect you too.”
    He started taking the chain off his neck.
    “No,” the little horse whinnied. “You mustn’t do that, master. The Glory was entrusted to you, you weren’t given permission to pass it on as you see fit. You must carry on the Quest without me.”
    Atreyu pressed his face in to the horse’s cheek.
    “Artax,” he whispered. “Oh, my Artax!”
    “Will you grant my last wish?” the little horse asked.
    Atreyu nodded in silence.
    “Then I beg you to go away. I don’t want you to see my end. Will you do me that favor?”
    Slowly Atreyu arose. Half the horse’s head was already in the black water.
    “Farewell, Atreyu, my master!” he said. “And thank you.”
    Atreyu pressed his lips together. He couldn’t speak. Once again he nodded to Artax, then turned away.

The reality of what just happened is slowly sinking in, and that alone would be enough to mentally cripple someone for hours if not days, if not years afterward! Noah Hathaway, who played Atreyu has said in a recent interview I found on TH-cam exactly how they did the scene. The horse trained for months to be submerged like that and remain calm. He stood on an elevator system that they lowered up to his neck. It never went further. Notice you never see him sink above his neck. They simply cut the scene there to a scene with Atreyu sitting in front of the empty spot where was. So no, once and for all the horse was not hurt in any way.

    I'm not even big on horses, but I can barley talk abou this without tearing up. This is the only horse death worse than Shadow of the Colossus. I mean come on. This movie has subtly manifested depression/suicide on film, in a way where, you don't even have to say a line of dialogue explaining it. It is also a great choice to have a character that can't speak sink into sadness. There is no sappy dialogue between him and a friend to really jerk those tears like alot of movies usually have. It is such a strong image of surrendering. Not even the love of a friend could overpower this emotional state. It is a reminder that darkness can be truly unending. Sometimes the lights are just too dim for a way out.

      Not quite as intense as a scene about a horse that knows it is going to slowly drown and gives up trying to escape because it understands that its fate is now predetermined and there is nothing it can do to survive. There is no humour or satire in the death in this film, it is generally hard hitting.

    • @sexyguy7518
      @sexyguy7518 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Queen Koopa We do get scenes that give the sense of impeding doom and death, but they are usually more familiy friendly or satirical. Toy story is a good example, the frog dying in Shrek was also pretty sad, but it has elements of light humour.
      Never Ending Story was a really deep film, and it subtly touched upon themes of victimization, loneliness, depression, nihilism, suicidal tendencies and fear. Even the antagonist "the nothing" is a personification of non-existence, emotional breakdown and self destruction. Even the characters in Winnie the pooh represent mental health problems.
      Children's movies have changed so much and they aren't quite as deep anymore, which is probably a good thing, but also a shame in a way.

    • @sexyguy7518
      @sexyguy7518 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ***** Yeah I agree, I was never traumatized by Never Ending Story when I was a child, I would have never have understood the deep parts of it anyway and it was one of my favourite childhood films. I like it when films are more sophisticated than what initially meets the eye because I can look back on the film now and understand some of the themes more clearly. Watching it again will be a fresh, New experience of the film.
      With Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks etc... There are still some adult jokes and themes in their films that children won't understand, but the subliminal themes are less sophisticated. It's less mind blowing than discovering some of the hidden messages and representatations in modern child and family films.
      Never Ending Story was way ahead of its time too which made it even better.

    Scenes like this paint Clinical Depression as some kind of horrific, otherworldly thing that just happens... it was startling to realize that that's what I was going through for the majority of my life. I watched Rolie Polie Olie and the Great Defender of Fun with my son, and the description "first you get all bluesy, then you get all snoozy, then you don't wake up" hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought of this scene. I thought of all the random episodes of childhood TV in which a bad guy with some kind of vacuum gun sucks all the color out of different characters, and they're just not themselves... There are so many metaphors for Clinical Depression in children's TV shows, and I never made the connection till recently. It's so much more than being sad. It feels like you're being quite literally crushed to death. Clinical Depression is so horrible because there is no actual swamp into which you can sink; if it gets to be unbearable, you have to take the plunge and end things yourself, because Depression isn't going to do it for you. It's either that, or mentally fight a Battle every single day just to perform the simplest of tasks. Truly, I don't know how I won my War against The Nothing, the Crushing Emptiness, the Void. Metaphors like this... I'm just so grateful that they exist. Most people won't understand, but for those of us who do, we can use them to explain to others what it's like. I know exactly why Artax sank. It's not something I'd wish on anyone, but Lessons in Empathy are always worthwhile.

    I never knew the Swamps of Sadness was a kind of bog that would have the ability to make you sad and make you lose hope and confidence, and therefore it would engulf you. I'm not a therapist, or anything, but I'd say Artax lost hope and confidence and was therefore engulfed by the quicksand.

    • @MCSuire
      @MCSuire 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      So basically, true sadness is the feeling that all hope is gone and that you have lost all confidence and will to go on. Makes sense.
      The feeling of loss is distinct apparently. Funerals rarely bring me to tears, even when it was my closest friend who died. I just went to the funeral, said my prayers for him, went home, and ate a sandwich. At the time, I think it was turkey. I still think about him every now and then, and reflect on that. But other than that, life goes on, and I can't bring back the dead. I'm not even sure if I'd want to.
      This is a sad scene though. This would be a hard thing to take in for anyone, even a person like me.

    • @Darkman9478
      @Darkman9478 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      MCSuire I can understand that. I get your point. Last month, my dog was suffering, and I took to the veterinarian, and they put him to sleep. I couldn't stand to see him suffer, and did the only humane thing I could do to help his suffering. I was beyond devastated. I miss my buddy a lot.

    I was thinking about my life in this suffocating place, where I just don't care about much anymore. And I realized I am like Artax. My therapist is not exactly like Atreyu (she has more training and experience perhaps in depression) but she is very much trying to save me and I just stand here and sink.🌧

    Marge: (tearfully) Oh, Artax! Please don't die!
    Bart: (chuckles) See you in Hell, Artax.

    Sadness is not the same as despair. You can be sad, but still going on. If you fall in despair you have nothing to go further. That's why Atreyu is SO SAD but he doesn't sink in the swamp.

  • @gladtobeangry

    My interpretation of the scene is this:
    The whole book - and the movie - is about Bastian, a boy dealing with the loss of his mother, by escaping into fantasy. But he can't escape the reality and the sadness either. The swamps of sadness are an analogy for his own depression, and that's what makes this scene so powerful - probably the pivotal scene of the whole movie.
    Atreyu, the hero of the story Bastian is reading, is traversing the swamp of sadness with his only friend: his horse Artax. The swamp itself tries to overwhelm anyone passing through with a sadness so great they can't go on and sink into the swamp. Similarly, Bastian is trying to cope with his grief over the mother he lost, trying not to get so enveloped in the sadness that he can't go on anymore. Bastian's father even makes a speech about this to Bastian in the beginning of the movie, about not giving up because of sadness, because we need to live our own lives even though others we loved have lost theirs.
    Atreyu is protected by the Auryn, the symbol of Fantasia, like Bastian is shielding himself from the pain with fantasy. Artax the horse, sadly, isn't protected, and it dies. Just like Bastian's mother. The loss of his friend connects Atreyu directly to the orphaned boy reading about him.
    It's so well thought out, all the elements link up perfectly. It's heartbreaking, but it's beautiful.
