How to help with poses: Watch/read Jojo. It's almost physically impossible for characters to go 5 minutes without contorting glamorously or striking some kind of exotic yoga pose. Seriously. It helped me establish an upper limit of how far I could twist and stretch my characters before they started to look ridiculous.
I'm so excited for not boring poses Something that's easiest for me is opening Pinterest and picking any pose. Because I would be like "oh I don't like any of these" but then I pick one and it turns out great
One of my favorite tips for drawing poses is finding anime figure and draw their pose, it really helps (probably not so much if you have a realistic style)
i like to use the "generic poses" for character designing, especially the 3/4 bust view as it helps me get a sense for their facial features and expressions lol but bc i use those so often ive found it harder to do real illustrations with fun poses,,, gonna think about these things more often!! ty for making this video :D
I'm still trying to break out of the half body phase. Also, the peace signs were so common back in middle school! I still use them occasionally but it's pretty rare now lol
Poses are so hard! I’m trying to do a picture of these two characters fighting and my main oc standing in the middle like “WTF!?” You helped me so much! Thanks!
The biggest thing for me is if you are making a character that looks like it posing, making sure the character doesn’t look like it’s posing for a camera that is straight on from you, you could make it look like it’s posing for a camera that is kinda of to a side, it’s looks more interesting and less stiff❤
When you post tutorials, I usually think "I don't really think I need this, but I'll watch it anyway for the art and commentary" and then end up realising I'm exactly the sort of person who needs the help. I am a serial pose-killer, and I found this way more helpful than any other pose tutorial I've watched.
Honestly, what helped me with poses and my art the most was getting into Jojo. At first it started as me recreating the poses the characters do in my drawings but then I realised that Araki uses a lot of fashion models as references, so ever since then I've been looking at pictures of models from fashion magazines like vogue for example. Definitely recommend trying it out :D
The basic poses are really good for character sheets and laying out what you want your character to look like. I have only been drawing people for maybe 2 and a half years now and I am just now actually getting brave enough to draw characters and getting inspiration to do so ^^ Pinterest is a life saver
at first, coming up with poses will be hard. but the more poses u draw the more you'll have in ur visual library, im at the point where i can draw more complex poses, but i just need a reference to make sure the anatomy is correct :0 also if u cant find a refernce for what u need, try combining multiple :) and a shoutout to lablablabla who's mentioned in every video because thats cool
A friendly reminder: If you’re doing REFERENCE SHEETS, it’s okay to have stiffer poses! The primary goal is to get a clear, full view of the character 😄
I always get the urge to watch TH-cam around nighttime, but I’m always too exhausted to listen to my some of my favorite TH-camrs because of their energetic/subtly chaotic energy. So, I always come to LavenderTowne’s channel because their voice is SO soft and calming! I also love their art style ☺️
you have no idea how badly i needed this, ive been telling my friend recently that i struggle with improving my art because of exactly this, but googling how to do other poses and stuff just frustrates me, so the way youre kind, soft and actually really helpful about it makes me really happy, so thank you so much
one of my favorite types of references is kpop concept photos like idk if its just my kpop hyperfixation but they always tend to have really interesting outfits and hair and stuff and as someone who struggles a lot with that, its really helpful for me. same goes for performance videos since obviously someone whos dancing is gonna make a lot of interesting poses
I feel like the absolute most important thing here is "give your character something to do." I think a lot of times we get caught somewhere between "I'm showing off my character" and "I'm trying to do good art" and end up just drawing a person standing awkwardly in some sort of colored void. But the thing is, at no point in our lives are we just _standing there_ - we're always either doing something, waiting for something, or hanging out (actively trying to relax or connect with others, which is still doing something). Think through what your character is doing and thinking at this moment, how each part of their body feels, and how they see themselves in relation to their surroundings - and _draw that._
Ive never thought about the weight distribution thing before and it really makes sense I'll also keep in mind about how much energy my character is putting into the action next time I draw

I just got my copy of unfamiliar in the mail and I'm so happy to have it!! I've been watching your videos for a long time and (as a fellow artist and comic creator) you've always been a huge inspiration to me. I'm so proud of you for getting unfamiliar published, that's an amazing accomplishment!!
1:50 those "feet pointing inwards" are actually called knocked knees! theyre a symptom of various disablities and may be found dissreaspectfull in art sometimes, as theyre usually romanticized and fetishzed !!
oooh love the expansion on the weight distribution tip! I've been drawing characters from the feet up when I do full body shots ever since, but I never realized it was because it helps to start where the weight is . everytime you do one if these tops and tricks videos my art skills always improve XD
something i do is like find a pose i like, draw over it with basic shapes so i can understand how it looks, and use those basic shapes as a reference to draw it myself
If I want to have a dynamic character pose, I generally search up pose refs, there are TONS of refs online for every mood, action and otherwise, and they have been absolute lifesavers. Sometimes I'll even use drawing bases as pose refs. (Other pieces are great for reference too! Fanart is a massive help for me)
some of these tips really hit home with some of my recent struggles! i would consider my posing skills to be intermediate, they’re not boring, but could still be improved. :p
Thankyousoooomuch! This helped so much with my posing; I can agree that just plain standing can get boring, so I haven't been drawing much recently :( but knowing all of this helped me to expand my imagination and have some storytelling in my art! Lavender. You. Are. AWESOME.

bold titles + actually helpful art advice + just plain funny and amazing = really great content and amazing youtuber!!!! all of your videos are so fun to watch :0
Omg priceless advice! I usually try to find poses on pinterest but I just end up with something a bit similar to what I have in mind and it takes me a veeeery long time. So looking for poses on youtube is definitely what I'm gonna try next time.
I'm soooooooo glad you did a vid on art poses because those things always make my art look stiff and bland. THANKK YOUUU AND PLEASE CONTINUE DOING WHAT YOU DOO 🙏
tbh this is exactly what i needed now that i'm starting to push out of my comfort zone a bit, that music video tip and weight distribution advice are going to be really impactful i can already tell thank you
I’ve been seeing the bear trap hood character and some of the other ones, especially from your OC video (the healer and the cutsie one with sharp pig tails) and I really wanna see their story and world, I can’t be the only one
I have an extremely differwnt opinion on how to act towards your old art to me its good to roast your old art because it helps you see how far you have come and you get a good laugh out of it
While I've heard other artists bring some of these up, in some form or another, that music video one is a new one for me. A lot of those videos bring out such odd and exaggerated poses, they kind of have to as a way to grab a viewers attention to their own work. To think about using those for your own artwork, that is an incredibly smart to do, I'm definitely going to snag that idea for my own stuff.
I love you, Lavendertowne!! And, thank you do much for all the tips you've given us throughout the years!! You're one of the most helpful artists I've seen
I know with me, one of the hardest things about poses is having the pose vibe with the character. Especially if its a low energy, or introverted character. Most of the ways a pose is made interesting is by giving it energy and making it dynamic, which typically doesnt work well for those types of characters.

This is soooo helpful. The music video idea is going to help me so much. I always forget to think about the movement of a character!! Thank you for sharing these amazing tips. ❤️☺️
I recently spend an unreal amount of time on a art peace I am kinda proud of. The character is my friends character, and I have them sitting cris cross with one arm dramatically resting on their leg with the other propping up their head kinda resting. The character definitely breaks the 4th wall and them smirking and staring into your soul works for them which was amazing because yes

Art tips: Think about gravity, think where your characters are resting their weight
Me: Gives all my OCs the ability to fly/hover
XD
There will still be a point where gravity is pulling it down.
but when they’re not flying gravity pulls them down
