Very Old Farm Machinery In Operation

  • More Old Farm Machinery Here: • Rock River Thresheree
    Both of my parents were involved with agriculture and I grew up listening to their stories of how things used to get done. At The Rock River Thresheree I could actually see some of those things with my own eyes! I recorded some clips of some really old gas tractors pulling an array of harvest gear, and I also caught a bunch of clips showing how steam tractors can plow a large field. Please enjoy this living history!
    (The Rock River Thresheree has been an annual; event since 1956. I would describe the Thresheree as a type of living history museum where an incredible amount of exhibits are often portable and interactive. Steam machinery that could easily be one hundred years old is seen throughout the large fairgrounds which are located just south of Edgerton Wisconsin. There is an emphasis on agriculture as seen by the large quantity of decades old farm tractors but there are also harvesting machines and many smaller engines. Other sights include the working steam train; "The Rock River Cannonball," a sawmill powered by a steam tractor, and several large sheds that house incredibly huge stationary engines. Historic re-enactors host battle re-enactments and the occasional train robbery. However, the most dominant exhibit is probably the steam pile driver. When that machine is running everyone in the area can hear and feel it! I have been to the Thresheree many times in the last fifty years and I would say that it is a worthwhile trip and will be enjoyed by all!)

    I think videos like this are important. A lot of younger folks want to get back into farming. What they see are massive and expensive machines meant for millions of acres. Not equipment for a small plot.

      in 1963 our weekly reader news paper told us about massive farms in Russia. versus small family usa farms.20 % of the wheat was lost enroute to the market.When machinery broke down, it was abandoned as there were no replacement parts,. The small family farm was superior way to farm.since then, we have gone to mega farms, while russia has gone to small farms

      You got that right! I have a tiny garden and I don't think I can afforfd a decent roto tiller. Real farmers also have to pay for taxes and supplies and insurance, as well as a lot of other stuff. They look rich, on paper, but are really just as poor as me. hi sir I want some explain videos in machinery,operations in farm equipment this courses is based in our uses of ourlife

    • @ipfeldspar
      @ipfeldspar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The first machine harvests corn and then ties the stalks into bales. Toward the end the big machine is plowing. The steam tractors are, of course, much older technology than the gas tractors. The steam equipment became obsolete pretty quick and that generation had, maybe, forty years of good use. The gas equipment has been used for well over a hundred years. I wish I had time and space to detail all of this but I just cannot. I will mention, that the gas equipment, is much easier to operate from a logistics point of view. A single individual can operate the gas stuff but the steam needs a large team of people to furnish coal, water, and to keep the steam up to proper pressure. Which explains why gas was the winner in agriculture.

      I will agree with you in terms of teaching "value" to people. For example, in terms of meat production, everyone should go hunting at least once. That way, they can learn about killing the meat, cleaning the meat, storing the meat. Once folks get their hands red with blood they might get a sense of how much work goes into food production. Most of the equipment is clustered tightly together, but this group of farm machines has its own corn field and meadow. It is almost set apart from the rest of the event. It is also at the main entrance and almost everyone will get a look at this as they come and go. Thank-You very much for viewing and commenting!
