Never ceases to amaze me on how these early machines are still sophisticated in their primitive designs. Love these early revolutions truly works of art from genius minds of their day.
It would be fun to run belts to all these engines, and have them turn a generator. It would be fun to hear what they sound like when loaded. Especially the hit and miss engines. They'll hit more often, if something slows them down between hits. The oil and kerosene engines might have a completely different sound, if they were opened up to drive a load. A generator, and a selection of loads could serve as a crude, old school dynamometer, to determine about how much usable horsepower they can really produce. I love these engines, they're old, dirty, and look like they're still in service, after so many years. I can't help but think that the engineers of these marvels would love to know that their engines are still hammering away after a lifetime of use.
Having only one cylinder, it's cool being able to clearly see all the different strokes. So shockingly simple you can clearly see what every single moving part does.
I suspect these top 5/10/20 etc. compilations are just looking to monetise views and have targeted old engines as they generate interest, without giving much of a thought about the content, or it's audience. Sure a little quiet background music might make the top ten ironing boards less painful to watch, but engines come complete with their own soundtrack which is best enjoyed by itself. I really adore the hot oil bulb engine in the last clip, very very early design to modern Diesel, you'll notice the early mechanically injected Diesel engines were indirect injection, concentrating all the compression and heat into a bulb to ignite the fuel spray!
