I never knew Bodhisattva was anything until I watched Ancient Aliens on History Channel. Then one night they explained about Bodhisattvas. I thought about this song. Maybe Donald Fagan, and Walter Becker knew a musician they really admired. And this person played to the level of making himself a Bodhisattva, like a living Buddha, I don’t know.
I think they are. Along with The Who, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. The timing is always precise on all three bands. But this song really stands out. You just know they practiced!
They were the coolest thing since sliced bread was chilled to absolute zero. I know the conventional wisdom is that Aja was the high water mark, but for me, Gaucho is the diamond-cut crowning glory. Babylon Sisters, Hey Nineteen, Time Out of Mind ? Absolutely astonishing!
I like to believe that those two work fine as a double album that was just released separately That may not be the case, but that is how I listen to them
My absolute favorite group in my high school days. This group right here was the link and bridge for me stepping into the world of jazz music. Love me some Steely Dan!
One of my favorite guitar leads of all time. Walter and Donald sure knew how to find talent in that studio. Hats off to both for a lifetime of awesome music. Thank you both. And thanks to ALL the studio musician's, Elliot Randall(reeling in the years), skunk Baxter(this song), Jay Graden(peg), Larry Carlton(don't take me alive, kid Charlemagne), and many others. Reeling in the years has had a profound positive effect on my life as has others. Thank you again
I've had this wonderful oldie stuck in my head all damn day. This is taking it to another level with the interplay between guitar and piano. Don is so young-looking in parts of these videos. Wow! I forget how great Walter was with his playing; he only ever got better and better. He took me from being a really good guitar player to a really great one, by forcing me to quit with the 5th and 6th root rock crap. Jazz fingerings really opened up my playing. He was a smart Cat, too. He would bust up any chord, join it with anything else in its neighborhood, and create some real tasty stuff. He just heard music differently than the rest of us, which is why he is Walter Becker and I'm not. Funny guy, too. A comedian in the most unassuming way. Thanks for this one Mr. Eliason.
I may be wrong, but the music is the original recording and layered in are several different performances with the incomparable Drew Zing, the current band leader John Harrington, and of course Walter. A review of one concert I saw with them with Drew Zing said they could have called it the Drew Zing show. Enough said.
I don’t care if it’s dubbed wherever I hear this it doesn’t take away what is a brilliant song .im jigging round the room like an idiot alwaywhere always will be a fantastic band in my eyes
Denny Dias and Jeff Baxter played the two leads on the recorded version (the one heard in this video) -- two of the best session guitarists you'll ever hear. I've never heard Becker play it, but I'm sure it's at least as good.
Mmmmm, like so much with the Dan we have no idea. This is the Skunk era when he was ostensibly at least, on bass. I stand to be corrected, of course, but it genuinely sounds like him.
Fantastic song-one of my top 5 Steely Dan tunes but...this is not a live version of Bodhisattva -and the accompanying video is several live shows spanning decades! And that is okay-But the amazing lead (at the end) wasn't ever done by Walter Becker!! Ugh...RIP Walter Becker... I think credit goes to Jeff Baxter.
Donald Fagen was not happy with recording the synth parts on this track. The instrument he'd used at the time, an ARP Soloist, was (like all synthesizers back in 1973) monophonic (one note only play), and because of that he had to record four tracks of it, and during recording of the second track he was growing weary of having to, time and again, re-tune his instrument (he kept on muttering "I'm gonna kill this thing!"), a situation not helped by the humid conditions in the studio. By the time these synth parts were finally done, he grew so angry that he forcibly removed the wires from his instrument, took it with him and ran away to a nearby stairway, went up several levels, dropped it down as hard as he could, followed it back down, smashed it to bits with his feet, and then finally had a recording engineer douse some alcohol on it to set it ablaze.
It's too bad Walter was shown playing the lead at the end. That was not played by him. In this compellation, they showed Jon Harrington playing lead, and some one else who I don't know. The recording that was played was of Deny Dias playing that superb lead, of course.
I would have loved to really hear the stage performance instead of the studio version, but, what the hell. The Dan is the Dan whatever way we can get it. Steely Dan is superb in every way. They never disappoint.
I'm crying so hard. I can light the hair .do better oh my God I don't think I can take it much longer. thank you God .wow or great music I'm crying hard. Walter Becker God-bless you sir .oh my God t.hank you for everything that has happened in my lifetime.
Is that Skunk Baxter with his hair cut off after he began working with the D.O.D. for the Missile Defense Agency? Actually maybe it's Walter Becker. Is the sound from this performance? The sync is off between image and sound. Still a great Dan favorite of mine. Interesting, I never saw them and heard they seldom toured.
Are you talking about the guitarist with the beret? That's Drew Zingg. The audio is not from the footage you see of him. Check him out playing on this concert at: th-cam.com/video/mGt8RebOy7Q/w-d-xo.html
I've TRIED to watch several live performance videos. However, the sheer fuckin FRUSTRATION is MADDENING! They must have hired the same, dumb ass videographers for each effort and the camera seems ALWAYS to be anywhere, EXCEPT WHERE THE ACTION IS OCCURRING! Ludicrous

Pre jazz Steely Dan, but great rockers before changing their tunes, literally. This was a great get up and rock number.
This might possibly be THE TIGHTEST BAND I'VE EVER HEARD! And the guitar work of ALL the players is JUST STELLAR! There ain't enough stars...!!!

Oingo Boingo is the tightest band I've ever heard. Saw Dan at the VB amphitheater; they're no slouch.
Long live Donald Fagen and RIP Walter Becker, you were gone too soon, but the music is immortal.
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs, and there are many.

This is the album recording of 'Bodisattva, dubbed over this film footage of a 'live' performance. That's why it sounds so tight.

RIP Walter! Stunningly powerful guitar solo performance by Mr. Becker!
Larry Carlton and skunk Baxter
Nope. Denny Dias with Skunk doing the outro solo
Interesting, and well-synched with the studio recording.

The DAN. Incomparable
It still amazes me how all these musicians can do THIS! Still leaving me speechless, even after all these years!
Absolutely, Barb, and not just musically, but their subject choices and lyrics, for me, never eclipsed.
My absolute favorite group in my high school days. This group right here was the link and bridge for me stepping into the world of jazz music. Love me some Steely Dan!
My first day of college I met my neighbor....Dr. Don. He had the 10,000 stereo. He put on Steely Dan. I was hooked.

Amazing performance!
awesome! and those backup singers!!!!
Fabulous!
Excellent!
Excellent video mix. But let’s remember Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter who did the original guitar work on it
Early SD has excellent guitar - both rythym and the solos. It almost seems like it was a conscious decision to get away from it on Aja and Gaucho.
it takes a genius to turn ordinary rock and roll into a jazz-rock parody of the Buddha anthem

Blimey how good was Walter Becker ... and how underrated?
Becker played bass on the first two/three records.
It is so sad that he doesn’t get the recognition from the masses but we steely heads know who is king 👑
