      Of course. The lyrics and riffs are great, but the drums are what makes this song.
      Porcaro played on Dan's 3rd and 4th (as main drummer) albums when he was 20-1.

    Jeff Porcaro was in Steely Dan and before they were Toto, they played a lot of Steely Dan in their high school band, Donald and Walter even got to watch them play as youngins', so it's more of a memorial to Jeff and their beginnings.

    • @slimjohn3351
      @slimjohn3351 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wrong, Jeff was not involved in 'Countdown to Ecstacy' where 'Bodisattva' is included but it's true that Jeff and Dave were once in Steely Dan's 'Can't Buy a Thrill' and 'Katy Lied'

    • @michaelcaplin8969
      @michaelcaplin8969 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@slimjohn3351 Well, Jeff's work in Steely Dan was a few years of hard touring, then he played on Pretzel Logic, pretty much all of Katy Lied, and on Gaucho, so out of all their drummers, he was definately their main one in the post Hodder era, and as much in the band as it was possible for anyone but Becker and Fagen to be.

    • @russellmaddox2437
      @russellmaddox2437 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@michaelcaplin8969 It's true that Porcaro toured with them and plays all but one tracks on "Katy Lied", but he was hardly the "main" drummer post Hodder - he doesn't appear at all on "Royal Scam" or "Aja" and only plays one track on "Gaucho" (the title track).

      SD has more than enough stones to pull it off live believe me. I’ve seen it. Unless Wayne Krantz is touring, SD’s guitar player is nothing like Lukather, but SD has Keith Carlock on drums touring and he is pretty much the gold standard.

    Preston Frazier, in his blog, described Toto's version of this song as, and here's my favorite bit:
    "David Paich's piano and Steve Porcaro's synthesizer programming are perfect. Porcaro probably created his parts in an eighth of the time it took Donald Fagen to badger the fake horns out of his analog ARP Soloist synth."
    According to Denny Dias, when Fagen tried doing that he was so angry whenever his instrument started going out of tune. Since the synth solo was supposed to represent the sound of a four-piece horn section, each of the four different tracks had to be recorded separately as the ARP Soloist was a one-note instrument, and Fagen kept going "I'm gonna kill this thing!" each time the instrument went out of tune and after the tapes had stopped rolling. Then after the whole synth solo was finished, its four tracks put together and then played and played back, Fagen then took out his anger by yanking the wires out of the instrument, ran off with it, and then from several flights of stairs, threw it down as hard as he could, and then did his best to destroy the instrument to bits by stomping on it before a studio engineer got some alcohol to set the wrecked instrument on fire.

    @brainscott8198 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    FUN FACT: To settle the argument about who played lead guitar and solos on the Steely Dan version...Both Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Denny Dias played solos on the song. Dias is first at 1:35, then Skunk winds it up with a blistering turn at 4:09.....you can look it up.

  • @RMR1

    Denny Dias and Jeff Baxter played the two leads on the recorded version -- two of the best session guitarists you'll ever hear. This one rocks -- Toto has always been an extraordinarily tight band -- but I prefer live versions that stay closer to the original guitar parts.
    Mixing it up with some improv and personal style is great -- I just think it's better to do it in an outro jam, not within the song itself.

    • @joe-vz6hx
      @joe-vz6hx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting - frankly I hate it when bands play a song that sounds exactly (or even close to) like the recording, how boring and defeating of the purpose of hearing a live version.

    • @RMR1
      @RMR1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joe-vz6hx Generally speaking, I agree with you. It's one of the things I've always loved about seeing bands like the Grateful Dead, Skynyrd, Blues Traveler, Allmans, Joni Mitchell (especially when Metheny and Pastorius were backing her -- they blew me away.)
      But why would I want to go pay good money to hear a band play songs the exact same way I've heard a million times on the radio or the album? I could just as well listen to at home. Give me something different, vibrant, eclectic.
      BUT there are a few songs that are so masterfully recorded that I WANT to see and hear the version I know and love. Steely Dan has number of them -- Bodhisattva, My Old School, Deacon Blues, to name a few. Mix it up on the outro, though, in an extended version -- I'm all for that.

    A masterful cover of Steely Dan's classic, with a full subtle twists and turns courtesy of Steve, Mike and Simon! Its heartbreaking to hear how they ended up :( The tragic loss of Mike Porcaro (to ALS), Jeff Porcaro (to a freak garden accident), Steve Porcaro losing part of his hearing following an operation to remove a (thankfully) benign tumor, Bobby Kimball (who was fired back in 83', basically because he couldn't sing with all the cocaine he was ingesting (they all were to be fair), but joined Toto again around 1998/2000) but who now has dementia. And then there is Steve, who was drinking himself to death (but thankfully managed to turn it all around) and of course David Paich (who had an apparent seizure during the 2018 European tour (who is still a member of the band in their current iteration as Musical Director and occasion guest performance). I was lucky enough to hear these guys back in 1995/96 as part of thier Tambu tour at a local small venue - the venue was around the size of a barn, but the acoustics were great! Hands down, one of the best nights of live music ever!

    TOTO plays a very competent cover. My favorite Bodhisattva live rendition is from the 1985 SD album "Alive In America". Sorry Steve Lukather, but George Wadenius kills in his fiery arranged guitar solo, besting even the 1973 album's studio guitar track.

      CSFLChampion Well, given that both David Paich and Jeff Porcaro played on Steely Dan records, their music is pretty much in the bands’ DNA.
