    Getting bored? Never. A lot of people are starved for build videos that focus on every detail. I'll be going turbo some time in the distant future, and channels that are rich with information like yours allow me to honestly assess my ability to complete the work successfully and do so without spending too much money. The shit you see on TV is so cut-down that you never see the most difficult part of building a fast car, which is always the intricate details that need to be done properly in order for the vehicle to be reliable.

    Probably the best timing belt install video I have seen. Turning the cam slightly to the right, before putting the belt all the way on, was the answer I was looking for.

      Seriously, I recently had to let go of my NA, and I'm prepping for an NB purchase next year, and I'm hoping to do it while keeping my daily, so I can do a build based pretty strongly on the work Greg is doing. I don't know if he has any idea how much this work will matter for posterity.

    you forgot something....there is a second mark on oil pump, around 10 oclock. And when you bring the crank to that mark you need to loose the tensioner and it will take a little more slack.
    its pretty important....that marking is the point where tension is at the max, so its important to check it there

      Luka Matijašević Exactly! 1 and 5/6 rotations per the manual

    • @matt543
      @matt543 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is right, first time I done my timing belt I didn't know about this and the motor had a horrible vibration. After ready the manual I realised that the tension has to be set at the 10 o clock mark.

    Thank you so much for this SUPER informative video, Greg! You hit every important question I had as to why my NB2 wasn't starting after replacing the camshaft seals. There are a lot of things you addressed for the VVT engine that no one else seems to address. You have a passion for what you're doing and it really shines through. Seriously, I can't thank you enough!

    Hey man I've learned a lot from watching your videos, my turbo 94 blew up last Saturday and I've been planning and preparing and your videos have helped a lot. I wanted to point out something though, which may not be a big deal at all. But IIRC, the procedure for torquing down the timing belt tensioner is to turn the then 1 5/6 turns, not 2 complete turns. This puts the timing belt under the proper tension for tightening.

    Anybody else thinks Greg should put on some aftermarket cams. it would be cool and go in depth of what cams to look for without having piston slam up on a valve. i think it would be dope and be a fountain of information. Plus you could pull more power.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mikey Erickson Possibly in the future. unfortunately this time around my head is already finished, and I don't want to have to pull it to have the valves re-clearanced for new cams.

    I've been waiting for you to do a timing belt video in depth for SOOOO LONG! Lol my Miata is literally sitting in my shop broken apart because I was waiting for this. Also if you do go a little more in depth with the CAS for the 1.6 that would be great! I know the 1.8 doesn't have one but you explain things so easily. From looking at the book and online research, it's rather confusing for a shade tree mechanic lol

      @accordv6er 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheCarPassionChannel yup. I have pigtails for my NB crank/cam sensors. Here's a question- will I need the crank wheel for MS or can I use the oe crank sensor? Or is that just so the ckps can read the super damper.

  • @strongocho
    @strongocho 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    5:12 Does this knowledge eliminate the need for clamping the wrenches holding them in place? I have only done a timing belt once and I did it by watching your older video. I used the adjustable wrench method to keep the cams stationary, but is that not necessary if I just make sure the nub is facing up before putting the gear back on?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The duel ranch method is not necessary, it's just helpful because the valve springs want to push the cams one direction or the other when you want them to stay in one spot. It's not that difficult to do it without the wrenches though

    For anyone who has a VVT motor who wants to mark the top tooth, looks like it is the 16th tooth back from the indented tooth....
