I saw you shout out southern hooning a while back on snapchat. checked them out and it turns out i live in the same area as him and i've seen his 240 at cars and coffee here lol. thanks for bringing the channel to my attention
I want to thank you, Greg, for the quality of content and information you put out. On 3/1/17 I purchased my first Miata, a 94 M edition. And, as of yesterday, it's up and running on Megasquirt. I wouldn't have known where to start without your videos.
Finally someone on youtube ralized that you dont put on your rings by hand, but with special pliers. But when using the pliers you use you just could do it by hand as well because the forces on the ring would be the same. And when in use it then can break on the opposite side of the cut. Proper piston ring pliers grab the piston ring on multiple spots and make an even spread of the forces. Your pliers put all the force on the spot opposite to the pliers and weaken the ring there.
Some say the circlip opening is the best to go 12 or 6 o'clock. The small opening on these pistons are showing that the best is to orientate those at 6 o'clock. Otherwise is has a minor risk to shake them out at high rpms.Great video, it has my thumbs up.
Greg, what compression pistons did you go for? I'm thinking of re-boring a VVT block out to 1.9 (85mm bore & 85m stroke) and looking at the piston options at 949racing.
Big thanks for doing this video series Greg!!!! I have an 03 MX5 with the 1800 VVT engine and will be doing a TD04 install on it next winter, starting to research everything I need now and gather parts. Your video's will prove EXTREMELY useful when it comes time to install it all!! Any idea how far I can push it power wise on the standard rods? If I can get 220~230 for now I'd be very happy but ultimately I want to do a full strip down and install something like Manley or Eagle conrods and push the power up, maybe even go with a bigger turbo at a later stage.
for installing the top 2 rings, there is a way to do them by hand that actually spreads them less then with the pliers, they showed it on one of the extra's on motor trend on demand.
Greg, Have you ever had the interest of measuring the gap between the pin and the rod itself ? what would be a healthy one ? it looks like the pin went thru the rod really easily
I clicked on a youtube video on my feed when at the last second I scrolled down a bit more and saw this video. I never clicked so fast in my life, not even on cookie clicker
So Idk if I missed it, don't you have to line the rings gaps up in a specific way proportional to other rings? like a 30 degree gap from the oil expander ring from the top and bottom ring?
on ur website is it says ur going to be running a megaSquirt PnP for a 90-93 ? is that going to work fine with ur vvt motor with a vics intake manifold and which MSPnp Gen are u using on ur new build and broke and boosted ?
I've been debating if I can get a MSPnP Gen2 for a 90-93 and be able to use it on my 90 miata and my 97 miata ? do u know what the differences are between buying one for 90-93, 94-95, and 96-97 ?
I know this is really old but what did you tell the machine shop? I’m doing a stock rebuild and I want the machine shop to have it all filed and the crankshaft pieces and everything done as well
I brought them the block & head, along with all the internals so they could machine the block correctly to my specific and check the clearances on my actual bearings and rods etc
Austin Williams Supposed to be a better "street" piston, not as much slap on cold starts because they expand less than Wisecos. I'm sure either would work fine.
Do a whole miata mega page? Same as the vvt engine but like all of the mods you have done to miata during years. Just waiting for see that thing pulling :D
Seteli If you look on the FAQ page of my site, I have a FULL mod list of my car exactly the way it was when the motor grenaded. Also have a B&B turbo build list on the same page.
Yes sir, Boundary Engineering Stage II. I talked about it in the first parts overview video if you'd like more details. ("Sugar, Spice, & Everything Forged")
vvt-mega-page is empty, i would love to have the info for my own build, please help! -Edit: by inspecting the page it seems there is text, but for some reason i cant select it and it is invisible....
Assembly lube. So when the engine fires up for the first time, all the moving parts are already lubricated before the oil pressure has a chance to build
But Greg, what's in the box?!!!
Randy Gross You shall find out in 6 days, 17 hours, 25 minutes.
House
You're dialog, lighting, camera angles and music are great. This is almost meditative to watch. Now I want to build an engine. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome info Greg :) Happy its starting to go back together again!
GearHeads: you guys have a great channel and make a fun pair to watch. keep up the vids!!!
Thank you man it means a lot! We'll keep wrenching! :P
Finally! I've been waiting for 80 years 👴
1: don't own a Miata
2: don't even own a car
3: never plan on doing engine rebuild
4: never plan on missing one of Gregs uploads!
+Gavin Smith Yesssss thank you!!
TheCarPassionChannel love your videos!!!!
Gavin Smith I do the same exact thing
1. Own a Miata
2. Own a few other cars
3. Miata NEEDS an engine rebuild
4. Same
I saw you shout out southern hooning a while back on snapchat. checked them out and it turns out i live in the same area as him and i've seen his 240 at cars and coffee here lol. thanks for bringing the channel to my attention
This car is gonna be so dope when it's done 🇯🇵
now the outro "back from the dead" has a meaning :) been a while
Katazumo I choose that song because I'm bringing the car back from the dead 😅
Katazumo Similar to my "Reborn" build name!

i hope its treated you well!!Hell yeahh
Yoooo i was wondering why our sub count was going up so much today haha Thanks for the Shout again homie!
+Southern Hooning Word! Keep up the sick videos you guys deserve way more subscribers.
haha thanks man! maybe some day lol just gotta keep pushing!
Damn y'all are faster than gregs vvt build is gonna be
Nothing is better than finding a video uploaded by Greg :)
7:08 tell my why I thought he was gonna let the piston go to sleep

As someone who plans to build their VVT miata for boost, I thank you. QUALITY CONTENT.
ayyy that southern hooning shoutout!!!
im really curious how your going to do break in iv literally heard it all
it's going to be exciting to see the engine run and what the poweroutput will be! :D
Some say the circlip opening is the best to go 12 or 6 o'clock. The small opening on these pistons are showing that the best is to orientate those at 6 o'clock. Otherwise is has a minor risk to shake them out at high rpms.Great video, it has my thumbs up.
Dudebro, I've missed you! Great to see that there's new stuff on the channel!
Killing it Greg! Love the content every time! Can't wait to see the next!🤘😎
Love the awesome content. Best building channel on TH-cam for sure!! Keep it coming and can't wait for you to smoke vettes instead of slow mustangs!!
Nice you mentioned about Southern Hooning, these guys are awesome! :D
Excellent content as always, can't wait to see the end result!
also, im digging the music dude this video was strangely relaxing lol
Greg, what compression pistons did you go for? I'm thinking of re-boring a VVT block out to 1.9 (85mm bore & 85m stroke) and looking at the piston options at 949racing.

Nice, keep the videos coming. I look forward to yours over MCM these days! (Who cares about a Mira!? :) )
i love engine building videos and your's are just perfect :)
That VVT Mega Page helps a lot! Video as good as always!
Another great and informative video Greg. Seriously, keep them coming.
That video was so good! Keep it up! the quality literally is so good and I feel lik I could build a new motor for my miata lol

the anticipation is real! cant wait to see that vvt

I was wondering about you. Good to see you.
next time on the circlips start with the split placing bothends in the groove and you should be able to push it in with a strong finger
Benjamin Davidson Thanks, was wondering if there was a better way to do it...
Also the circlips gap should face bottom or up of of the piston. Not a side as shown.
your videos are incredibly helpful and informative keep it up guy
Nice shirt!!! I went to the tour stop in Arlington and picked one up
I learn more from these videos than in my high school auto shop class lol
Greg, Have you ever had the interest of measuring the gap between the pin and the rod itself ? what would be a healthy one ? it looks like the pin went thru the rod really easily
Nice cap Greg. "I like the tuna here"
awesome video. love watching build vlogs
your quality keeps going up!👌
Those rods look awsome Suxs you can't see them
Btw ring gap is supper inportint cool to see you killing it :$ pleaseeeeezzzz keep it up !👍🏽☝🏽️
I clicked on a youtube video on my feed when at the last second I scrolled down a bit more and saw this video. I never clicked so fast in my life, not even on cookie clicker
Nugenrules omg cookie clicker ruined my life for like a month
jeez you guys are fast!
YOU ARE ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So Idk if I missed it, don't you have to line the rings gaps up in a specific way proportional to other rings? like a 30 degree gap from the oil expander ring from the top and bottom ring?
Yes - that would be the segment at 3:33
@@TheCarPassionChannel why are you the most amazing man ever xD
how would you go about choosing the right ring gaps
that ford guy The set of rings or pistons you buy will come with a formula to calculate the ring gaps for your setup.
Best car channel!!! ♥️
yessss! waiting 4 to long!
Thank you for the upload!
I'm dying to do an engine build now. What grease do you use? :)
useful video, but what compression ratio did you go for?
Dan Loosmore 9:1
SNAPFAM
Veniamin Golovenko Winner! Hit me on snap, fam.
Does the orientation of the oil expander gap matter?
great information, greg!
was also waiting for that :)
Nice my build is getting along too! I see you like chuki beats as well.
on ur website is it says ur going to be running a megaSquirt PnP for a 90-93 ? is that going to work fine with ur vvt motor with a vics intake manifold and which MSPnp Gen are u using on ur new build and broke and boosted ?

MSPnPPro is basically a plug-n-play MS3 :)
do I need to use same oil on the rings as I am gonna use brraking in the car?
I know this is really old but what did you tell the machine shop? I’m doing a stock rebuild and I want the machine shop to have it all filed and the crankshaft pieces and everything done as well
I brought them the block & head, along with all the internals so they could machine the block correctly to my specific and check the clearances on my actual bearings and rods etc
Greg did you get the rotating assembly balanced? #worth_it
100%. Crank, pistons, rods, damper, flywheel, clutch.
Is there any reason you went with supertech pistons over something like the wiesco pistons?
Austin Williams Supposed to be a better "street" piston, not as much slap on cold starts because they expand less than Wisecos. I'm sure either would work fine.
Currently watching while sitting in my red 92 miata
sponge Bob sound effects "10 yrs later" 😂😂😂 it's been a while lol
Did u balance the rods and pistons?.. and is notching the block required to run H beams? -Thanks
Pistons, rods, crank, flywheel, clutch, and damper was all balanced. Block modification was not necessary.
TheCarPassionChannel thanks for the reply!!! :D
How the hell do you get those gudgeon pin circlips out if you need to?
what do you think went wrong with rodnocks LS1?
love these videos

What's your power goal in this build?
So informative, awesome.
damn, youtube is doing you dirty Greg. I haven't been seeing any of your video for a few weeks now.
Dc2 I haven't uploaded in like 5 weeks haha
must have been too busy playing with your rods
slowly following this build to see if it will be right for my vvt motor :)
a bristle could come out of that brush!
Will you replace the oil pump with an aftermarket one?
Yes sir, Boundary Engineering Stage II. I talked about it in the first parts overview video if you'd like more details. ("Sugar, Spice, & Everything Forged")
cheers

Thanks for pointing that out, looks like a global update has broken some things on the site. I will get it fixed asap!
Damn my job!!!! Snapfam
what's the name of the red lubricant you brush on the piston?
option man Engine assembly lube
TheCarPassionChannel thanks for taking the time to answer..keep up the good work. everyone is learning a lot
FINALLY.
Greg is there a episode that has the link to website for pistons and rods thank
wambas world Fab9Tuning.com
Thanks man
FAMSNAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love you Greg
Shit Greg thought you were dead or something, been ages, worth it tho ;)
GREG I LOVE YOU
Who would dislike this video. Smh.
6:41 what is that thing he’s brushing in the hole? Also what does it do?
Assembly lube. So when the engine fires up for the first time, all the moving parts are already lubricated before the oil pressure has a chance to build
TheCarPassionChannel oh ok then thanks
SNAPFAM!!
good vid loving the content 👍
Dude, you should try to win Haggard's LMTC, then re-build it to your liking LOL
Hey did you use oem thrust bearings
Yes
@@TheCarPassionChannel should I buy new ones or use the same ones?
@@cris2k921 New is best if you're rebuilding your engine, probably the cheapest part of the whole rebuild
@@TheCarPassionChannel ok thank you so much and this is the car that made 500hp in one of your videos?
@@cris2k921 Yes! The internals you see here in this video are the same ones still in the engine when I made 500+
What bore/compression pistons did he get?
On this motor, 84.0mm, 9:1 compression
@@TheCarPassionChannel thank you!
snapfam!
SNAPFAM!
Why is there blood on the table Greg?
keep up the good shit !
There is a chamfer on one side of most connection rods.
What is a machine shop? I am from Germany
WHEN IS THE NEXT VIDEO COMING OUT?
+MikeTheMiata Monday!!
what wil be the compresion 9.5:1 ?
DrMike gas pwred 9:1
wil you go lower than 19psi with the boost ?
Very helpful thank you.
I didn´t knew piston-rings had to be filed to a certain gap. interesting.. =)
