  • Pete Rose on befriending Frank Robinson and other black teammates, when the Reds organization said it was a problem and when he first met Satchel Paige, who didn’t know who Rose was, even though he was leading the league in hitting at the time.

Every time Pete mentions a player and some stat tied to that player I double check it. Every single time he is right. He just knows that Don Blasingame hit .281 in 1962. It's incredible. What a savant!

Pete was durable and had a 113 career OPS+. He was a significant player but nowhere near one of the best ever, about three wins a year better than replacement level. Growing up a Mets fan in the 70's I hated Pete Rose, especially after his fight with little Buddy Harrelson in the 73 NLCS. But there was also that grudging respect for his talents as a ballplayer. He played the game the way it should be played. What he did was wrong, but he's paid for it. He should be reinstated and recognized for his accomplishments as a player. While he is alive.

Pete was a durable singles hitter with decent defense at several positions. He drew walks and ran the bases well and played baseball like he played sandlot football and talked like a Cincinnati meat cutter. He was a championship player and he was a competent manager as well.
Pete Rose, as a manager, bet on regular season play involving the team he was managing.
People think this ought to be overlooked, and that Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame.

Lied for 20 years about not betting on baseball and only came clean 1) to make money on a book and 2) because he thought it was his only chance to get into the Hall of Fame. So we're supposed to believe a habitual liar whose story only makes him look better? He's a dirtball who cheated on his wife, cheated on people he dealt with throughout his life. One of the reasons he got busted is he stiffed the guy making bets for him. Refused to pay what he owed. You guys are kissing the ass of a complete dirtball. Yeah, he can quote stats. I told him I remembered when he was coming up and nobody thought he had a chance to take Blasingame's position. He said 'Hutch didn't like him'. I should also mention that he was the last one to make it to our dinner (there were 6 of us) and it was football season, so the first words out of his mouth when he arrived were 'How'd Notre Dame do today?'
Later the conversation inevitably got around to his suspension. I said I thought he was in an impossible spot; they weren't going to let him back into baseball unless he admitted gambling, and if he admitted gambling, they'd never let him in. He looked me right in the eye and said "I'll NEVER admit to gambling". We talked about a lot of stuff; salaries, toughest pitchers, (Marichal) best player he played with (Schmidt) and so on.

you missed a great era in baseball history. players went all out because they had to, pitchers pitched complete games, day games, Monday Night Baseball, Saturday's game of the week all the local team's games on free tv , inside pitching, going to a game was something any kid could afford to go to( just a few bucks for a DA seat) players playing with the same team for years, players who enjoyed the game and appreciated the fans. I pity the generation that drew up after free agency.

I'm always amazed at the detail old ballplayers remember things. Maybe they're just making it up, or maybe they really do remember. Old players always say stuff like, "1957 in Chicago; it was the second game of a doubleheader. We'd won the first game 3-2 when Jones gave up the winning run on a slider that bounced in the dirt. That put us up by half a game in the pennant race. I had eaten some peanuts from the concession stand in between games and they didn't really agree with me, so I sat down next to Williams on the bench. He was a big kid from Alabama, with big, thick glasses. His dad owned a hardware store, and I told him...."

He employed black folks at his businesses, he attended Negro League ballgames, sat in the dugout and helped instruct the players, and at least once threw out the first pitch at a Negro League game. He was one of the most vocal supporters of integration in the majors. Considering the time and place he grew up he was remarkably non racist. His family had been abolitionists in previous generations . His grandfather pretty much cost himself his political career by advocating fair treatment of blacks in Georgia.
